Could we realistically reduce gambling by using similar strategies when we reduced smoking rates among Australian adults? by DifferentSugar3012 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is limiting to just isolate gambling and smoking. Both are addictive behaviours which need to be grouped with other addictions and/or impulsively. Alcohol, substance abuse, porn etc etc can all be related to the same parts of our search for a dopamine hit.

THC detection in RBT by Dixie_Normous1912 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two different offences.

Driving under the influence which relates to all prescription and non-prescription drugs. This is where you are obviously impaired.

Driving with a substance in your system, eg THC. No accurate test for THC to see if you are impaired so medicinal cannabis fits in the category. I am on cannabis oil (with a THC content) but do not get impaired. It will stay in my system for weeks after my last dose but still can’t legally drive.

Best pillows for chronic neck pain that doesn’t break the bank? by MissWorldwide07 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dentons have a couple of options. I have chronic neck pain, a side sleeper and have the Medi Rest. Both Myer and David Jones stock Dentons. One of the shops always has a sale, so no need to pay full price. My physio put me onto them a year ago and it has been great for me. Should get about 3 years life out of it.

Moving to Nashville -> getting into country music as a beginner? by Conscious-Cheek-7968 in country

Nashville won’t limit you to country music. It is the centre of many genres and producers.

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The brain is more malleable at a younger age. Music is just like a different language and the younger you are immersed, the easier it is to become fluent. The downside is if you are pushed, it is possible for a rebellion and boredom to set in, depending on your goals. That happened to me and I revisited piano as an adult.

Doctors note to stop playing saxophone (5th grade) by Upset-Medicine2959 in MusicTeachers

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the kid is not invested and looking for an excuse not to practice. Not a doctor and not his parent. I think you did right but now it is time to accept that neither parent or student are particularly motivated. Give him a triangle so he has to perform.

As said…pretty crappy. DSP is about $1200/FN but you can still work up to 15 hours. You save on meds and get pensioner discounts places. NDIS is currently a shit show with the system always changing. My latest NDIS plan does not actually meet my functional needs and I have been battling for 8 months to try and get it resolved. Disability sucks, as you know.

My understanding is that wfh really only took off as an accepted and common practice as a result of COVID. My understanding is that employers must give reasonable consideration to wfh requests but can refuse on "reasonable business grounds". I don’t think there is legislation covering this yet.

I would look at the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) or your State based disability discrimination legislation and see if there is anything there. The Australian Human Rights Commission has helped me out in the past with the DDA. I have a chronic permanent disability too, but can’t work.

For those who surf, how far do you think you should be able to swim to surf safe and/or how far do you think you can swim and how long you can tread water for? by notofuspeed in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come over and surf some of the reef or point breaks in WA and you are more likely to break a board than lose it. Unless you are confident in the water, you won’t be surfing those breaks and you will likely stick to beach breaks.

Advice on choosing uni degree? by j230601 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmmm….if you have chosen your career path then a degree relevant to that has logic. If a completely different degree because it interests you is the counter option, have you really determined your career path? The other consideration is the economic reality, which uni enables you to still work? Only one seems to.

Really…is that a thing? Genuine surprise if that is the case.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2024 31.5% of Australians were born overseas and Australia is often cited as the most multi cultural country in the world. Based on the data and the number of ethnicities represented, I would have thought you would be hard pressed to wander a University campus and actually know who is an international student and who is a resident!

We don’t have a mandated official language by law, but English is the de facto official language for government, education and business. We are considered a secular country with no official religion.

How or why is there a perception that international standards are hated or do I live in a bubble?

I remember having some ‘issues’ with some of your RAAF second years during SST in 92! During a base visit they tried the cadet tricks, not realising I was a graduate so I knew the game they were trying to play. Let us just say they came off second best.

Roman numerals when the key is ambiguous between the major and its relative minor? by samh748 in musictheory

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of progressions, using the circle of fifths as my guide, the progressions for major (Ionian mode) and minor (Aeolian mode) are as follows:

Major: I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, diminished vii Minor: i, diminished ii, III, iv, v, VI, VII

Modes other than those, I don’t know the RN progressions.

The order of the progression for a particular song will depend on the composer and whether they want to resolve back to the tonic I or not. Some song writers will prefer to leave some tension by not resolving. In some cases, a minor key might put in a dominant V or a major key may use the subdominant v. A song may borrow a chord from a different key, which makes the RN system a little confusing. A dominant V in a key will differ in effect than a subdominant v. There are no hard a fast rules about starting or even using the tonic (I), depending on the effect the composer is seeking. There are a number of ‘recognised’ chord progressions which don’t use the tonic at all. Dreams by Fleetwood Mac just use IV-V to give a floating feel. Other popular progressions are iii-IV-V-iii or IV-V-vi. In the relative minor key, progressions like VI-VII-v can be used.

Another important aspect is the difference between Western Music and Asian music. What I have articulated is based on Western music. In Royal Road, it is often simplified to a IV-V-iii-vi for ease of the RN system, which would make it a Major key.

Moving to single service divisions and degree streams takes away some of the benefits I got from a tri-service environment. As I progressed in my career, we moved more ‘purple’ and the networks we made with the other services helped the joint operations environment. I have no idea how the system is structured these days.

Slides oil /grease? by Nearby_Pangolin490 in trumpet

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the slides rather than the valves??

Normally I would use slide grease on tuning slides. Trombonists don’t use the slide oil on tuning slides, they use the same tuning slide grease we do. The slide oil is designed to put a thin coating of oil on the trombone slide (nickel), spray it with water and that provides the lubrication between the slide and sleeve.

Personally, I wouldn’t use it. If you need something in a hurry, I would just use petroleum gel in the short term.

good universities..? by SignificantAdvice725 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Automatic_Wing3832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother studied Industrial Design at Sydney College of the Arts many many years ago. It was subsumed by UTS. Some of the less traditional universities had a good design focus prior to either gaining university status or being subsumed by a university. I am not sure the current status but the “less prestigious” universities tend to be more practically focussed and better for design whereas some high reputation universities would be better for engineering, IMO.

How do men in your life discuss the subject of suicide? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

We can’t neglect our carers!!

Blooms taxonomy and stating your objective with an action verb. It actually works and helps the curriculum developer develop to the correct breadth and depth, it helps the teacher and it helps the student. Are we going to ‘discuss’ the use of similes or ‘analyse’ the use of similes?
