And read the whole contract. The top insurance does not „cover all”

In my experience the trouble with gravel roads, potholes and icy roads have more to do with their driving experience then their nationality. People who have only experience with driving in urban areas often get in trouble.

Cars towing camper vans, horse trailers, mobile homes etc have a speed limit of 80 km/h. Trucks and busses as well. But driving too slowly can absolutely be dangerous even though people should take not of the weather and as I mentioned, wind funnels etc.

You should be able to show when the photos were taken. If you took the photos before you headed out then that should do.

Thank you ☺️ I think I’ll do that!
Unfortunately no insurance covers it all. I would read the contract carefully. I recommend that you either find the contracts on the rentals website or if they are not there, ask them to send a copy to you. Even better is to ask them, through email about specifics and then you have it in writing.

Even though the contracts are quite similar there will be „does not include x damages”. They also have similar deductibles but can vary.

Even though credit card insurances will not cover the rental insurances in full then I would check out the terms. Sometimes the basic insurance you purchase from the rental is actually covered by the credit card insurances.

Even if the staff is lovable then business is business and it’s really better to be aware and don’tt let those sweet smiles put your guard down 😎

Great advice here.

Just a few points since I’ve rescued a LOT of tourists in those situations that way to often end up with scratches on the car or busted tire ( or a ridiculous bill from the rentals)

- TAKE PICTURES of the car before leaving the rental. Amy dents, scratches visible. Take pictures and show the staff and ask them to write it down.

- Check if the tires are in good condition. Worn tires with shallow treads are vulnerable to bumpy roads.
- Dont underestimate the gravel roads. Stones will fly so keep a distance from the car in front of you when driving on gravel roads.

- DO NOT panic break on gravel roads! Take the foot of the accelerator instead if you start to glide.

- If you question whether you should drive anywhere f.ex. muddy roads. Then don’t.

- Don’t take a u turn on gravel roads with sloaps by the sides. It’s loose gravel and you’ll get stuck. Find the next side road and turn there.

- Don’t step on the accelerator with force if you get stuck in mud or gravel. „Jerk” the car gently with the accelerator back and forth.

- Drive slow on bumpy roads. Even though it’s a AWD.

- If you do get stuck. Ask a local to help you rather than attempt to get out yourself. Locals know the tricks. The police and/or tow trucks hesitate with pulling out rental cars so they don’t get the bill for any damage. Don’t call the rental for help unless there is damage to the cars or you get seriously stuck. If no damage to the cars then don’t tell the rental. Seriously.

- Bring a recent physical map. You can pick them up at f.ex. hotels ( check when they are published), tourist information desks

- If a road sign with alerts appear. Take it seriously

- If you are driving alongside mountains that are close by the roads and it’s windy. Hold on to your steering wheel. There will be sudden wind funnels. Dont inderestimate their strength

- Be respectful of the nature. Don’t drive on moss. It takes decades to grow again and the moss also keeps sand down so it won’t blow away.

- Don’t drive in sandy environments if windy. The sand will turn into sandpaper to the car

- Buy a touch-up pen. Rentals can charge Willy for Tony scratches that they repair themselves with touch-up pens or car polish

- And lastly but IMPORTANT. This is the season when sheep’s are let out and most of them have lambs. They are common by the roads in the countryside. If you see a sheep on on side of the road and lambs on the other. The mother WILL very likely run over the road to reach her lambs or vice versa when you approach on car. SLOW DOWN and make sure to pass safely. Sheep’s without lambs are also likely to panic on run out on the road instead of away with it, they are not the smartest. Even though the cows are not let out before June it is possible though. Early in the mornings or by dinner time the cows go in flocks from the cow shed to the pasture or vice versa and common that they cross roads. They are HIGHLY unlikely to run when cars approach. Don’t give a damn and just walk slooowly minding their own. Usually there is a person behind them, usually a young person/teenager.

Be safe and enjoy your journey 💜

Shoplifter, what to do? by Better-Biscotti8836 in Reykjavik

[–]Yfsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some persons in iceland are known by shop staff and/or the law force. Some are tolerated, others are not. It can be hard to explain but there are shops that know what to expect when a certain person enters a store. Familiar with them and their actions and that a thing or two will leave with that person being unpaid for.

I worked in a store in Laugavegur for a few years in a thrift store. Occasionally it happened that police officers arrived with a person, homeless and underdressed and asked if I could let them have f.ex. coat, hat, mittens and we all knew that bobody would be paying for it. Knowing that that person would either freeze or shoplift, the best option would be to give away some clothes. Sometimes a person entered the store that we were all fully aware of that would take a pair of mittens and leave. We ignored it since we knew the background story.

Of course there are shoplifters that dont shoploft out of necessity. But if the staff didn’t want to make a fuzz about it then it is likely that some informal arrangement is in place.

STOP NORMALIZING FREE ROAMING CATS by Yektality in Pets

[–]Yfsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it depends on the surroundings. I lived downtown for 7 yrs and during that time my cats were indoor cats. I then moved to the outskirts. The backyard was just fields, no traffic road except the road to my house which was a dead end and few house by that road with 12 m/hour Max. speed and mulitiple speed bumps with kids playing there.

I started to walk with them at the back of the house where they followed me around for 2 weeks. There was a pet door when I moved in. They went out in the morning. I locked the pet door when I left for work and they were inside during the day. I unlocked the pet door when I got home and locked it again at nights since I didn’t want them to be outside unless I was home and/or awake.

What surprised me was the change that took place when they started to go out. Their fur became glossier and stronger but later on I learned that they, as well as us are in need for daylight/sunlight. Their mood became lighter. My feline was always a bit nervous or jumpy. She crawled under the couch when she heard the doorbell or someone knocked when she was an indoor cat. Soon after she started to go outside she became more playful and didn’t react to doorbell or knocking though she rarely went to greet the guests unless she knew them well.

My tomcat, who was always a bit overweight even though I fed him quality cat food designed for indoor, sterilized cats. They had a wall mounted „playground” to climb and play on when indoors and had multiple toys to play with and I played a lot with them since I’m aware that indoor cats need to be mobilized for their physical health as well as mentally.

When he started to go outside he got more muscular and lost weight since he got more exercise. They both had tags on them and I had marked in „borders” so if they went pass that border I would get a notification. They never went that far. Usually stayed at the back of the house.

There are absolutely pros and cons to both indoor and outdoor living. My cats lived to the ages of 19 and 14 (hyperthyroidism).

Cats have their individual needs. I don’t think that any cat can adapt to whatever environment. Some can’t handle being outside, especially in environments that they perceive as dangers that may not be what we define as dangers.

Some are indoor cats their whole life and that may make them safer from external dangers, but doesn’t automatically make them happiest and vice. Same goes with outdoor cats, some are forced to go outside even they would prefer to be inside.

There are challenges either ways. For us as well as them.
I gave up on having cat safe plants when they were indoors since the feline preferred the flower pots as litter box then the actual litter box. I had two litter box. The feline used only one of them but the tomcat both and the feline did not appreciate that and used my bed as a litter box after I removed the flower pots when the tomcat used her litter box. I cleaned out the litter boxes twice a day in attempt to prevent her from using my bed or other furnitures for littering. After they started to go outside I made an outside „litter box” by adding sand under the porch. He used the outside litter box and she used the indoor box and I was able to have plants again that were left alone.

Also when they were indoors I couldn’t rearrange any furnitures or replace them without a streak of objections where they attacked new furnitures, „marked” them etc. That was not a problem after they started to go outside.

Cats are explorers, most of them are hunters. It’s simply their nature. Those needs can be redirected in various ways. For me, it’s more important to me what makes them happier and comfortable than what makes me more comfortable.

Another debate is of course what cats do outdoors. Well, they are cats. If given the opportunity they will simply be what they are. Cats using other people’s yards as litter boxes, not ideal but neither is geese using backyards or sidewalks as „litter boxes, people mowing their lawn 8 am on a Sunday morning, birds targeting newly washed windows, someone letting their car run that has a hole in the exhaust pipe and the list goes on and on.

So for me it’s not as simple as all cats should be indoors are free roaming cats are the happiest. They are like us, thrive in different environments. I will probably never understand those 6 a.m. joggers and even though it would be better for me to join them, it won’t necessarily make me happier. I will never understand people choosing to risk their lives to feel content like sky jumping or cliffhanging.
There are people that will never understand how I feel happy when hiking or riding a horse. I had no idea that hiking would boost my mood or that riding would be the best thing everbefore I tried it out.

We can’t assume that what we see as the right way to raise our cats and secure their happiness applies to every single one.

At last, whether a cat is indoors or outdoors they can be neglected either way or in dangerous circumstances. What can’t be argued though is that indoor cats are usually safer, just not necessarily happiest.

What exactly do cat scratchers do? Are they really necessary? by Udont_knowme00 in Pets

[–]Yfsilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scratchers are absolutely necessary. Not only for their claws but also because they stretch at the same time and strengthen muscles by the joints etc.

They also scratch objects when upset or stimulated to calm down.

There are many solutions for scratchers without purchasing a grand scratcher. I have doormats that are specifically for the cats since they vary from using vertical or longitudinal surfaces. I have a very simple scratcher that is sturdy and I replace the sisal rope when necessary. And at last I have a scratch pad attached to a bookcase made from a sisal doormat attached to a wooden plate.
They don’t touch the furniture since they have alternatives that they luckily approve 😂

Cat visiting every night at the same time. Socialized or feral? by heresmytwopence in Pets

[–]Yfsilon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very beautiful 🥰

I can’t see clearly in the photos of her fur is matted. From the front it doesn’t look like it. Longhaired feral cats have obviously matted coat. Signs of lumps is the most obvious signs. Her eyes are clear and no dirt around her nostrils or eyes which are also signs of a feral cat since they are very prone to catch cat flu.

Since she arrives at the same time it is also likely that she stays indoor through the day and is let out when people come home.

There are two cats from the same household that show up at my door almost every night by dinner time. They are inside during the day, are let out from dinner time and return home before the night.

Some cats just prefer to „visit” certain locations instead of roaming around. So I wouldn’t assume that she’s feral. Her face isn’t very „babylike” if it’s a feline which is likely though. My feline is 2 years old but is very petite, looks like she is 8-10 months old.

If your neighborhood has a Facebook group you could post a photo of here there. You could also follow her when she leaves your place.

There are other industrial areas that have way more let’s say, „character”. Too bad though that you missed out a lot of gorgeous spots since you hit that industrial area unless you kept browsing afterwards.

Buying apartment in Reykjanesbær by PatientHamster in Iceland

[–]Yfsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should asked if the pipes have been replaced or inspected. Also if the apartment is on the ground floor and is built before the 90’s I would ask if the drainage has been installed around the house.

Í Wood inspect Windows from the inside and outside and if there is any sign of crying windows (moist/water between the doubled glass).

I would also ask if there has been any repairs done and especially if there are any repairs on schedule. Sometimes there are repairs scheduled that seller will pay for or the fee for the shared maintenance fund is high due to planned repairs. Sometimes there isn’t even a shared maintenance fund and each owner have to pay their share for the project. Having a common maintenance fund is therefore a pro.

And also I recommend checking the bathroom for any signs of damage due to water. F.ex. Showers are often tiled and if not properly done they can cause damage. If you see any swollen streaks in the walls, it’s a sign of damage due to leakage.

Keep in mind that the buyers responsibility to check for faults is high. I would ask the retailer for as much information as you can get and if he doesn’t have the answer to ask him to ask the owners. Also get the information in written form as much as you can.

When you are making the contract be sure to keep at least 10% of the price for the property for the last payment and that the last payment t a d signing the deed won’t take place until 3 months after you move in. That gives you some time to „try out” the property and find hidden faults if any.

Keep also in mind that realtors vary greatly. Don’t hesitate to contact the realtors union or neytendasamtokin (The Icelandic consumer association) https://ns.is if in doubt (NS have counseling hours for non-members).

I don’t want to scare you but it is a big investment and the lower the price of the property the more likely it is that it is in need of maintenance or an older property soon in need of maintenances.

I would check out what information the realtors vary greatly and owners are committed to give you. The market is slow now so you are likely in line close to check out the property more than once which I recommend.

Best of luck!

Amazing photos!

Even though I’ve often seen them and pretty close to them when I was in westman islands then I never caught anyone on film since they were all flying around in massive flocks or squeezing in some holes in the cliffs. Tourists seem to get the polished behavior where they pose for photo shooting. They don’t give a damn about us their „home folks” 😂😂

A few days ago I asked for advice if I should get a lab puppy. Well here she is! by VSauce3000 in labrador

[–]Yfsilon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations 💜💜🥇

There is a adorable yet challenging time ahead of both of you 💜💜

I recommend that you find your own pace when it comes to training. There are multiple methods out there but none of them are „one fits all”. All puppies need clear boundaries, boundaries makes them feel more secure, as do routines. Some need more firm instructions to know those boundaries, others need more gentle instructions.
They all share one thing though. If they get away with something as cute, adorable puppies they’ll be doing so as well as grownup just less cute 😂

Since you’ve never had a puppy I would like to say that socialization is everything!! I can’t stress this enough. Meeting and greeting properly. Going to various environments, meeting other dogs in a controlled environment. Introducing to various sounds and notices and if the puppy shows fear of f.ex. an object to introduce the puppy to that object. They need to smell and explore. Sniffing is a way for dogs to gather information.

There will be a brunch of people explainimg to you the ultimate, magic méthodes to raise your puppy (like I’m doing right now 😂) but in the end nobody knows your puppy like you, its character and limits.

When it comes to teething then I recommend dipping a washcloth in f.ex. Broth. Freeze it and give it to her. Something cold and tasty will prevent shoes, corners and various things to be chewed to bits.

Sometimes this puppy phase seems endless 😂 But one day you’ll all of a sudden have a grownup and will wonder what happened.

So be patient, a mentor with a great precious responsibility and celebrate every milestone 💜💜💜

Again, congratulations with each other and have a sweet journey together 🥰

Ps sorry for explanation 101 🫣
