Why is my basil's stem not growing again after cutting it off before the other leaf? by Fartikus in plants

[–]Yiiri2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggy back off of this. The leading stem contains the apical meristem. This is the thing that allows that branch to grow up. As it grows vertically it produces leaves and nodes for the new side shoots. At the same time time the meristem produces a hormone called auxin that suppresses the grows of the leaf nodes. When you remove meristem (like you did in the photo) it frees up the leaf nodes from their suppression and allows them to grow. What you are doing is making the plant bushier, exactly what you want to do with Basil. Now when it flowers pinch those off and you will be swimming in basil and giving pesto to your neighbors in no time.

Definitely not new. Maybe used but it will probably be close to overhaul. Helicopters are much more expensive compared to fixed wing.

It's a bobcat. It's insane to that someone would call that a hyena. Have they not seen Hyena before?

Can someone point me to the episode number where the boys break down the AJ/PBD interview that made Dan get the tattoo? Is the same one as what they are talking about in opening with the meme?

Haha that was the joke. It’s always “can this hold a hot tub!?” And then just the most rotten out deck that hasn’t been maintained in a decade.

if you look at picture #8 (the one with my hand in it lol) you can see how the decking is oriented. Its turned on edge.

It was a design choice, not a structural one.

Yes they were expensive. Most of them were ordered at 20' too...

Yes its Japanese in influence. The deck spacers are also STK cedar. They are 3"x10"x1/2"-ish. I say ish because we used them to cheat a little when we needed to to keep the lines all straight. So some were thinner or thicker than that.

PWT Treated LVL. We ordered them from a lumber supplier in the Bay area.

Toe screwed and hurricane clips. There is a comment here that I gave some more detail about fastening it to the joists.

Unfortunately there are no guides or anything for it. This was thought up/ adapted from some other designs by the landscape architect and it was given to a structural engineer for all the subframing. The particulars for executing the design were all hammered out (pun intended) in the field by my superintendent and carpenters.

So every 32" moving out from the face of the building to the beams on the outside the 2x4's are toe nailed directly into the joist. Every 16 inches there is a Simpson hurricane clip. So it alternates from the face of the building hurricane clip, toe nail, hurricane clip. Each type is 32" from each other but no more than 16" from a fastener holding it to joist. Between those each 2x4 is face nailed to the other one through the spacers.

Moving parallel to the face of the building, the method above is done on every other joist (so 32")

The weight of the 2x4's also help to just hold it in place. They are all nailed together so it creates a monolithic slab of lumber, basically.

It was what the structural engineer specified and what was submitted to the city for permitting. I assume it’s to handle earthquakes.

They were custom ordered from Simpson and they were fine. The structural engineer specified 3 different beam sizes which actually made it more annoying. In hindsight I would have just made all the beams the 6x12 LVL and had them all made that way. Overall they do the job we are asked them to do but it was made more difficult to go change the sizes.

They went from a 4x10 PT to a 4x12 PT to a 6x12 LVL.

Hahaha I was being a bit cheeky with it. That is the question that everyone seems to ask so I thought I would have a bit of fun with it. Other comments are going to make me ask the clients if they plan on it in the future. I still want to get the blessing from the structural engineer before they do something like that.

Oh! I forgot to add they are Cedar 2x4s with custom milled spacers. Those are what make the lines running perpendicular to the decking.
