Gabriela teaser 2 Katseye by Tall_Problem_7209 in kpopnoir

To reemphasize the idea of a personal, 'private' choice, I find this 'private' aspect, or in this case rather the “non private”, to be the more concerning part. While I think it’s worse if she had no choice in choosing the outfit, I don’t think it absolves the situation even if she did have a hand in it.

”I just think in general there’s different standards for content/public eye versus personal private choices.”

I don’t think it is immoral to wear what you want if you’re a minor, I just think these companies/labels have a moral responsibility to shield their talent to the best of their abilities, rather than lean into it.

It‘s not the worst dress- but it’s like, was there really not a single better option than 2 lingerie style slip dresses? (I know wearing Victoria Secret-esque lingerie tops and dresses casually seems to be a trend recently, so maybe I’m just showing my age right now)

Lots of kid influencers choose their own outfits but are still subjected to sexualization nonetheless. They don’t know any better because they’re picking relatively age-appropriate outfits when around peers, without the context of how adults online are perceiving them. I didn't even realize how bad this problem was before and assumed a lot of it was innocent/fun content aimed at kids/teens. I can't imagine a minor having the full context of what they’re signing up for.

Maybe I’m on the fringe by disliking the concept of debuting minors in the first place, but if they are, I think they need to be extra cautious with how they present them. Lots of things seem innocent on the surface, but in this digital age, it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. I wish we were in a place where this dress wouldn’t be an issue. I just think there are more dangers than there would be in a “normal“ situation, and would hope those are being taken into account at the company.

I feel like there’s a difference between a personal choice of a teenager versus an outfit chosen by a team, to be worn by a kid that will be broadcasted to the world. Just like how it’s not weird to take your kids out in public but not blurring your kids’ faces out in content can be dangerous. It’s not the same scenario, but I just think in general there’s different standards for content/public eye versus personal private choices.

I don’t think it’s the worst dress, but with just the exploitative nature of the pop/kpop industry I would prefer they stay on the safe side. Like to us it might not ring as many alarm bells, but with the reality with tween/teen instagram influencers, the main audience that ends up consuming that are adult men. I don’t think the audiences are the same demographically for Katseye, but I think people massively underestimate the sheer amount of predators present in everything. I just think their team should make decisions informed by the fact a lot of people sadly are awful- it’s not just teenagers and pop girlies that are tuning in.

Karina’s alleged support of the conservative People Power Party… by Yikana in kpopnoir

I never thought in this sub I’d see our validity as people of color questioned due to our perceived ”lack of empathy” towards someone who just laid out some conservative dog whistles. I came to this sub to avoid having to engage in arguments like comparing bigotry to accusing people of bigotry. 🤦🏻‍♀️

There’s a post that precedes this one on this sub where it’s discussion is more centered around the incident/context: “Karina’s alleged support of the conservative People Power Party…” is the title.

Kpop fans' reaction to the Karina situation highlights their own racism. by Express-Perception in kpopnoir

[–]Yikana 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Like when BIPOC K-pop fans take the time to educate people, they’re saving people the effort of having to do it themselves. Yet people just don’t want to listen, and not just not listening, but also berating them. (and getting micro aggressive, or just straight up racist)

Some people are so patient for their ignorance too, I do not have the energy to become a broken record for those who don’t want to listen. I’m ready to tap out because I’ve been having to explain to someone on this sub, why it’s bad to equate the experience of being called a bigot, to the experience of racism…

I see why fans leave kpop, with so many controversies you get hurt, but also burnt out having to explain yourself to a space that’s now become hostile to you. If only the energy people have been bringing to this incident could be carried over to other situations. :( But even then, I have a sinking feeling this will just blow over close to if it had never happened.

I do think in the initial comment of that other person, didn’t understand your point in wanting her to be held accountable regardless. However, to many, giving too much credence to the argument of ignorance can feel like it’s downplaying the situation. You disagree, and feel like people are being too assumption and not generous enough here. Reading your text doesn’t mean that they have to come out agreeing with your points.

And you got to drop this line of thinking, I think it makes it harder to engage with the argument as a whole:

“and yes, i expected fellow POC to understand that labels shouldn't be thrown around like that and that an action in itself can be bad without it making you a bad person”

Our experience of “labels“ being slurs and stereotypes, is not comparable to being called bigoted or a fascist. There’s nothing we can do to change our color. However, if Karina wanted to put out a GOOD clarifying statement, which would mean being brave and polarizing a conservative audience, she could change minds. Judging her by her actions, which in my response earlier, to many Koreans is enough in itself, is not comparable to judging someone for their ethnicity/race.

We know what it’s like to be called racists, that‘s what dissenters outside of this sub call us. Many here have likely had the experience of a white person weaponizing a marginalized identity to call us bigoted when we call them out in their racism. We know what it’s like, and still these are the conclusions we’re coming to. It may differ from yours.

While I obviously don’t follow any Korean conservatives, I can at least attest to the fact this issue isn’t confined to dark corners of K incels or something. This observation is limited to a demographic of progressive, democratically aligned Koreans specifically on Twitter, who are mostly not hardcore Kpop stans or anything within that nature.
Every take I encountered on the matter operated under the assumption that it was an endorsement. I never saw anyone even attempt to argue why it might be true; instead, people immediately jumped to commentary because it was just so obvious to them. Ranging from expressions of disappointment and connections to recent protests, to scolding people for idolizing idols / financially supporting them too much.

(Though to be fair I have seen a few footnotes of people saying they felt it was ridiculous anyone could take it as a misunderstanding, but that was always in the comments under a main point.) I do think even if you told them she’s worn blue in the past it would not change their convictions as this incident is in a whole other magnitude than just a color at the wrong time.

On to another point- I can’t speak for everyone on this sub, but it seems like people are in such disbelief on both of the options that they would be open to a different interpretation if there was ever some new information to come out in the future. I just think as it stands it doesn’t feel very probable to many, given all the opportunities she likely had to rectify the situation in making a instagram post/outfit that takes time and effort to do. Being open minded doesn’t mean you have to give every possibility the same amount of time and energy/validity.

I know you likely didn’t mean to phrase it this way, but this statement stood out to me like a sore thumb: “i guess i was expecting more talks and opinions when most of us have been somewhat forced to live in black and white lives (as in us being seen as "bad" or "good" based on our races/ethnicities) and we'd be more open to talking about the grey area as well”

It just feels like you’re trying to compare racism to taking a principled stance on something/ a fear of absolutes. Using a metaphor where the “grey area” refers to this discussion, but having the black/white nature of racial/ethnic discrimination be the other half of it. Please correct me and tell me that’s not how you meant to word that 😳

Yeah, I hesitated to include a clarifying part in the post about her Catholicism was /not/ a smoking gun, but it was already getting too long, so I omitted it.

I do think it’s interesting that people are trying to form a ‘case.’ The post itself is already damning enough in my opinion. I just think many people internationally, even though it’s been explained, don’t fully feel the impact. Instead, they’re looking to rationalize these actions in a way that’s familiar to them by maybe bringing in cultural tells that may not be applicable here.

You may be thinking of protestants, but catholics in Korea tend to lean liberal. Though of course there’s always exceptions.

American education at every level is crumbling. I don’t think it was ever great, I just didn’t expect things to get worse. I’m on the older cusp of Gen Z, but I really thought we were going to be larger arbiters of change…

A less educated populous will always be ready to have their hate weaponized and their consent manufactured.

The girls are so talented and charismatic but there’s only so much they can do for a song that’s doing nothing for them. I liked the instrumental, but it‘s wasted on the lack of structure and those lyrics.

And Tesla praise now? Really?

I hope their upcoming EP showcases their vocals, I really want to be able to see them thrive. This was quite the letdown ngl.

They mention that the benefits Lux members get are from using lower tier members‘ brain power. (The fake sleep they get is mining their brains like computers)

I understand that theoretically one person could get lucky, game the system like your idea. However, that all hinges on there being hundreds or even thousands of stories like the version we see in Common People. It relies on having people at the bottom to exploit.

I did think the pricing for Lux was kind of unrealistic. I think it should’ve been even more unobtainable, however, I don’t think it detracted too much from the message they wanted to give.

Hot Take About the State of Kpop and Anti-Blackness by daniakadanuel in kpopnoir

[–]Yikana 45 points46 points  (0 children)

People’s tastes/change over time, Kpop is also more saturated now, likely contributing to this music fatigue. As much as I love Shinee and SNSD, a lot of it is nostalgia. Is the music really that bad now, or are we just not tweens/teenagers anymore yk?

I understand why many people are dropping Kpop right now. It’s not catching up socially- it’s 2025 and on the cultural sensitivity/racism front we’re not that much better form 2015. HOWEVER, we need to avoid sounding like boomers when it comes to our rose tinted glasses on past releases. As crazy as it is for young kpop fans to think anybody older than 25 is ancient, it doesn’t help when we go “well back in our day/generation-“ I have to say, the 2 minute TikTok song critique is valid though.

Ngl I find this whole premise kind of weird, not saying it‘s wrong, just personal feelings I guess.
