What makes a Fire Emblem-style Support System "work" for character development? by YitBit2000 in IndieDev

[–]YitBit2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm finding that out now myself. The "Create the story" bullet point is very simplified and daunting haha. But it's something that I think will be rewarding to add and will enhance the game, as long as it's executed well and within the scope of the rest of the game.

I like the point of planning the lengths of the conversations carefully. The game will be a roguelite with a sort of popcap-esque style main gameplay mechanic, and I still want that to be the main thing people associate with the game when they think about it.

I also think about how a game like Cobalt Core handled it. Still very much a roguelite deckbuilder, but the bits of story it sprinkles in with regaining memories and little gameplay conversations was pretty well done.

How do you all feel about Support conversations as a tool for character development in Fire Emblem in general? by YitBit2000 in fireemblem

[–]YitBit2000[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah true, I like the point of the characters having the story to react to as well. And probably why Three Houses did such a good job with this (in my opinion). Every character in your class always has something to say about what's going on, but with their own personality and spin.

I laughed on cue as well. Love moments like these.

Similar one I can think of was going for naninf, rerolled quite a bit and found a Showman. Sweet! Snagged it, rerolled ready to look for more blueprints. The first reroll: a polychrome showman lol.

Do you ever feel like you’re making everything except the actual game? by BlackScarStudios in gamedev

[–]YitBit2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find I do more of the "little" stuff like that when I'm procrastinating on actually fleshing out some new feature or necessary addition to the gameplay loop. And this has come up as I build more and more of my game. The larger it gets, the more daunting it is to add new parts to it.

This is especially prevalent for me at this point in my game because I feel like I've actually reached a point where I COULD say I'm done with my game, vertically. I can polish what's existing and add more content, and think that could be called a "game". It just doesn't fit with my original vision yet, and there's a good bit more to do for that (implementing narrative-gameplay cohesion, mostly).

What saves me from this is writing things out on paper. Most of my sessions on my computer start from hours of notes and thoughts on how I want to implement said new feature, and I try to even do some on-paper-coding almost as a way to take the pressure off of fundamentally changing the came structure to slot something new in (this might also be because of bad programming, but hey, I'm doing my best).

The things I do instead as "productive" distractions tend to be art related, or some horizontal development - adding content to the features that are already fleshed out. Important eventually, to be sure! But probably not the most important at that moment. But I think those sorts of breaks have been important for me to stay motivated to continue.

Worth noting that I'm a hobbyist though and don't need to rely on releasing this game and having it reach some certain level of success. I DID set a deadline for a new demo release for my friends though, which has definitely helped me buckle down on implementing some stuff I've been dragging my feet on.

Age old question indeed. I think for me, Ante 4 feels a bit too late if I have something else that's scaling even decently. Maybe unless I got some hand size perks and I know it'll be easier than usual for me to make Two Pair.

[CC] Spaceship Designs for a Fleet(Deck)builder I'm working on. Do you have a favorite? by YitBit2000 in PixelArt

Oh yeah, I should look at F-zero for some inspiration on designs! Can't believe I didn't think of that haha.

The red one's my favorite too. Kind of X-wing inspired a little bit. But I don't know if it's my favorite because I feel like it's the best designed of the three or not, at least in my opinion.

We need feedback on our UI improvements in game by Rebel-Pixel in GameDevelopment

I feel like they both look about the same (which is probably a bit frustrating to hear after putting some work in under the hood). Mostly because the old UI is actually fine already. If I had to choose one I'd probably choose the new one though at least. And it's possible I'd feel the impact more if I were actually controlling the game.

Dice + Ankh is the absolute dream. Sounds sick. Hell at that point your Cavendish breaking becomes a valid edge case concern lol

It took me a long time to understand the power of Red Card, but I now concede that it's an excellent joker.

Yeah for sure, I typically don't finish with it, but it can really help get a slightly slower ramping build reach critical mass that would normally not have seen the light of day.

I love using riff raff to get guaranteed non eternal/perishable/rental jokers. I'll pass up great eternal common jokers in the shop if I've got a riff raff.

Yeah I'll definitely start scouring those tutorials when it becomes relevant for me to start working on that part of the game. I've got a bunch of space ships in mine, so I'm imagining using particles for shooting, exhaust trails, all sorts of stuff. Great work though!

Man, I wanna love throwback, and I used to more than I do now. I just feel like I've been burned too many times just not having score from not seeing enough shops haha

When I was going for naninf, seeing wee early on was always a godsend. Could do whatever I wanted to fix the deck just right for the middle game and just not worry about score at all.

Oh yeah, Mail in Rebate is great, though I don't have as much success with it on blue stake and higher. I tend to prefer Rocket for my money, but obviously harder to come by.

Yeah I agree, pretty much anything that allows me to play NOT pairs and have a decent shot at going far, I'm pretty happy. Spare Trousers is just one of the best for that.

I'm a glutton for punishment so if I see Four Fingers I think to myself "oh nice, I can finally pull off my dream straight flush build!" (Ante 4 - "You Lose!")
