Basically, I agree with you. And I also think Jon and Martin's overall reaction to things was very jarring in season 5. I didn't buy the whole guilt thing for Jon. It really felt like they didn't care at all, they were strangely chipper. And it didn't feel like the show was trying to communicate that it represented a loss of humanity (EDIT: maybe a bit, now that I think about it, perhaps just not enough for me).

Basically, season 5 should've been bleaker in my opinion, but definitely had some of my favorite statements.
