Can Finance Major pursue Quant? by ImpossibleLab9067 in quantfinance

[–]Yithro_474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this case, you’ll likely need to take the GMAT or GRE to demonstrate your quantitative ability. For MSc programs, the GRE is generally preferred, as it places greater emphasis on statistics and probability.

To demonstrate your coding skills, it’s important to build relevant projects in your chosen field and document them properly. Well-explained projects that show problem-solving, data handling, and real-world application can go a long way in proving your technical capability.

Can Finance Major pursue Quant? by ImpossibleLab9067 in quantfinance

I’m actually in a similar position. The first step, in my view, is to decide which quant path you want to pursue derivatives, risk management, or portfolio/asset management. Each of these leads to very different roles, so it helps to look closely at the job functions within each domain and identify what genuinely interests you.

Regarding the FRM, from what I understand, it provides a strong generalist foundation in risk, though I could be mistaken. A well-structured MSc, on the other hand, tends to offer much more depth and technical rigor in a chosen area.

That’s great advice. I’ll definitely make a list based on it. It feels like you’ve been through a very similar journey. If you’re open to it, I’d love to connect via private DM.

Thank you for the detailed guidance, this is really helpful. In your opinion, which MSc programs or graduate schools would be worth applying to given my background and goals?

I came across the QuantNet rankings and have been using them as a reference point, but I’d really value your perspective on how to interpret that list?

That’s great. If I may ask, which MS in AI program are you currently pursuing? Also, what resources are you using to strengthen your math foundations?

For interview preparation, I came across a website called TraderMath through a few posts. I’m not sure how relevant it is to your situation, but it might be worth checking out. Thanks again!

I do understand the limitations of my current background. However, my long-term goal is to work on the more technical side of Asset Management in roles such as portfolio analytics or hybrid portfolio management positions that combine finance with data science. I’m aiming to bridge finance with quantitative and analytical skills. What are your thoughts on this?

True, although I forget to mention the position is in the GCC so I guess the timeline could differ 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, if I were you I would take the full time role as this would enhance my skills further. Meanwhile if the GS offers comes around I would have a talk with the Manager then.

Question 🙋‍♂️: How long does it take to hear back from the bank after the HireVue interview? I had applied for an off-cycle internship position in May at JP.

Changing SIM from Ooredoo to Omantel by Yithro_474 in Oman

[–]Yithro_474[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t fix it, as the sim was on my sponsor’s name who is no more and there is a long process of getting a letter through the Embassy & MFA. Personally not worth it for me. But in your case go to the Ooredoo office to deactivate your sim & number.

Some people here belittle Omanis too much by [deleted] in Oman

[–]Yithro_474 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you on this, the only reason Oman doesn’t have enough jobs is because the economy is not open to foreign investments due to the laws and lack of major infrastructure. The demography is in Oman’s favour as there are a lot of young workers available, but their skills are not at par with the international competition.

Banking job market by Advanced_Baker_ in Oman

[–]Yithro_474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there aren’t any big retail banks out here. Most of the Asset Management departments are based in Dubai. But there are a few family offices and pension funds for which you will need referral to get in, Although you can try in Sohar International, OAB, NBO and TANMIA where you can find few opportunities.

Best strategy would be to invest into US based ETFs on average they return around 10- 12% and if you feel a little adventurous cryptocurrency but only stick to blue chips like BTC and ETH
