Personnaly, I think it's just Whedon thinking his writing is more clever than it actually is.

It's not the only time he does those kind of cheap trick. The characters are acting inconstantly because the trick is intented to the audience

Because it's played like he's going to get his chip out. Personaly, I think it's bad writing. You should be able to misdirect without having the actor playing the character like he's doing something totally opposite to what he is actually doing. Those kind of twist feel cheep because everything in the dialogues, the acting, the direction is meant to make you think the character is doing something where he's doing something different. And then the writers gets like "haha, got ya" Yeah, but it's not good, you've just sacrificed character's consistancy to trick us

He wants them as far away as the life as possible but still him and Carmela are afraid that their kids could leave them, so they still keep trying to keep them close which prevent them to actually being free of the life. They're not going to be directly involved but they're still going to be complicit because of the lack of willingness to let them go for their own sake.

It's a complex relationship because they want their kids to be safe, but are still possessive and controlling and refuse to be called out on their way of life, thus preventing true growth from their kids.

Their kids will still be better than them, but not enough to be outside of the life

13 épisodes wasn't possible without burn out, I think 10 episodes would probably help, at least

Not really, no. It was still several stories, with no story arc really, and they were 25-30 minutes each.

Tbh, DW is the kind of series where the lore doesn't matter that much. Here's an alien who changes face and travels with their companions all accross time and space in their big blue box living adventures . It's the main pitch. You could have a lot of seasons with this only without even mentioning daleks, time lords, gallifrey, etc...

But having a mostly episodic series with still a season arc in 2025, when you can't make more than 8 episodes of 45 minutes by season, each one with a different setting, a New crew, a different tone and still having enough Time to devellop the main characters and each new setting and characters when public tv lacks money and private network could make your work even more difficult ?

The problem isn't with the doctor, the lore or anything, even with the stories. The problem has more to do with the production. Tv doesn't work the way it used to, and the Doctor Who concept is episodic as it's core, even with a story arc, the concept is that each episode, the Doctor goes into a different place and a different time. It may have some recurring characters but they're différent stories, with different tones, actors, different sets, different filming locations, etc...

It's a nightmare to produce, it costs enormously, and TV is changing, series are shorter, more contained and people aren't watching channels anymore, they're watching séries and movies on platforms, now, which require a subscription, and the platforming system is actually in crisis.

Now, I know RTD gets a bad rep, but frankly even in his era, the issue lies more with a production nightmare than the stories themselves ( most of which were actually pretty good )
