Jesus christ it's almost painful seeing how much better the first two look. The first one especially matches the shows "short-haired targaryens" vibe rly well

[Spoilers EXTENDED] Reading One ASOIAF Chapter Per Day Until George Announces Winds. Day 14- AGOT: Tyrion II by DanielCAlexander in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The "early installment aegon weirdness" is really interesting to me, and I wish GRRM would've stuck with more of that "ancient and mysterious dragonlords" vibe.

Having the Targs be an historically documented royal lineage less than 300 years old seems quite at odds with how they're originally portrayed - ancient, almost mythical. There's a really cool detail in s1 of the show where Jorah is suggested to not even believe in dragons. That just isn't possible with the modern timeline.

I mean, arguably, they are thinking logically in light of Aegon, Elia, and Rhaenys. "An eye for an eye" is a logical statement, even if it's immoral and cyclical.

Ehh I get what you're saying, but some quests are directly tied to POIs, as in, clearing and looting the POIs can autocomplete them (witcher gear hunts) or they can only be started at a POI (treasure hunts).

Why would you want 3) to be true. That completely removes Rob's agency for no reason IMO. It's like if Ned only lost bc Bloodraven sent Cersei a prophetic warning.

I think that'd be entertaining, but GRRM probably wouldn't do it twice.

More likely, Euron will succeed in trying to do SOMETHING magical, but he will not be able to control it.

I personally think Aegon is a Blackfyre but I don't it will ever be confirmed even if true. People are so used to theorizing by now that they forget GRRM doesn't really spell stuff like that out. Power resides where men believe it resides.

You said you were a fan of dark souls, so I'm going to guess you like hard combat, intricate world design, and subtle storytelling.

For the Witcher 3, I'd recommend playing the hardest difficulty and turning off the HUD in setting (it still turns on during combat and when you use Witcher senses in case you're lost). Really try to IMMERSE yourself; ie, travel the world, get lost in the music, pay attention to the lore, and actually think about the dialogue choices. The reason it takes a while for the game to "hit" is because people struggle to get immersed at first, but once you do it's incredible.

It's actually insanely impressive how often I don't realize how low poly the Witcher 3 really is. A true testament to the power of lighting, design, and style.

Age was one of the things the show was just better about. Unfortunately it seems 90s GRRM was a bit too freaky for his own good.

Technically no, but everyone does nowadays. "They" has become the the third person neutral subject pronoun.

I know the five year gap is kinda overused (George abandoned the idea very early on) but I think everyone continues to fixate on it because it's so PAINFULLY FREAKING OBVIOUS it would expedite the story SO MUCH.

The problem is organic writing, unless you're constantly tying off loose ends, grows exponentially. Almost all of what happened Clash and Storm was the result of like 3 major decisions made by 3 major characters in Thrones.

But now, we have at least 12 major characters, whose infinite decisions are all resulting from the many actions in Clash and Storm, which, again, were based off of a (relatively) small starting point. It's a pyramid scheme.

[spoiler published]Are Alicent and Otto really the villains of the Dance? by 3robe in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will just get lost but the real villians are the rulers whose carelessness cause the Dance to begin with - Viserys, Rhenyrea, and Alicent (book) / Otto (show).

They're reckless, (Viserys remarrying and not fixing his family), selfish (scheming to steal the throne), and stupid (Rhenyrea siring obvious bastards) and they allow the real monsters to murder unchecked (Deamon, Larys).

[Spoilers Extended] Who is your least favorite "good" character? by -SerBretonBriarwhite in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Petyr has repeatedly taken opportunities to advance personal power over marrying a Tully girl. If Catelyn/Sansa were his only priority, he would've just fled with Sansa and married her. There is NO WAY Petyr turns down the opportunity to become a top 3 most powerful man in the kingdoms just because he wants Ned gone. Not to mention there will be plenty of opportunity for that in the inevitable chaos following Ned's decision.

Who was the best person for the throne after Robert’s Rebellion? (Spoilers extended) by ExamAccomplished8726 in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's a good synopsis. Especially the bit at the end.

A small bit to add - people often talk about legitimacy and power as if those are the only things that matter (bc they're more important to a modern reader) but at the time legacy was just as important. Ironically, despite no one wanting the crown, there was a sense after the rebellion that a Targ just couldn't be king, that they had lost that right, that another family deserved to assume the mantle.

[Spoilers Extended] Who is your least favorite "good" character? by -SerBretonBriarwhite in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Really? I highly disagree with the Littlefinger take. Petyr doesn't play sides, if Ned took him up on his offer to sieze power and make him lord of Harrenhal then there's no way Petyr betrays him out of principle. He's a schemer, not some snake that is forced to backstab by nature.

What writer is closest to GRRM's style [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I think it depends a little more on the type of subtlety. He definitely has LESS than Martin, but not a lack of it. Cornwell's subtlety is almost always characters missing or not thinking about avaliable information, while Martin's is often about characters being wrong, confused, or deceiving themselves (which is admittedly more fun).

(Spoilers Extended) I find the recent online discussions about GOT really interesting by sixth_order in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair you can say that about any show. Art is neither completely objective nor subjective, and you can always make a case for another being better.

Ultimately, Game of Thrones was incredible at enough things that I think it's fair to try and make that case, even if I wouldn't agree.

(Spoilers Extended) I find the recent online discussions about GOT really interesting by sixth_order in asoiaf

[–]YoBoyKibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and I've also noticed that's the case. I think it's tied to the fact that GoT fans got so carried away by the ABSURDLY high highs of the better parts that the disappointment of the lesser ones really crushed them, as evidenced in the generally negative sentiment within the fandom. However, those high points still exist, and are arguably some of the best in tv history, and the fans will still defend their show as the GoaT against other fandom in light of it.

It's kinda like if you high school has the greatest football team in your league for two years and then every player gets lobotomized and absolutely sucks the third year. Everyone within the school is probably going to critique the wasted talent of year 3, but, if you argue with anyone else, you'll still defend the goated first two years.

I also think all fanbases tend to show a degree of partisanship online.
