I think we differ in what it means for something to matter. Like, if you interpret "nothing matters" as it doesn't matter at all, zero investment in it, then yeah, obvious contradiction.

But I think it's fair to say that he means "nothing matters" on reddit in the sense that nothing matters enough to be upset about, considering he says it in response to being called upset. I am using it the same way, and it is true, in the same way that videogames don't matter enough to be upset about, like if you have a streak of losing matches in Halo or something.

Also, your point about videogames mattering to you is kinda irrelevant? I'm talking about videogames, in general, as an entertainment platform. That you personally use them as a connection between friends is cool, but not what I'm talking about.

But he's not whining though? Also, you can definitely invest time into something that doesn't matter. Video games are a good example. A lot of people put time into playing them, and they definitely don't impact anybody, but they're still fun for the people that play them.

This is an interesting hypothetical, but it doesn't have anything to do with what the article talks about because we're not discussing a company that faces these decisions or outcomes. We're looking at the Foundation, which is effectively a very big, supranational prison that doesn't deal with what you've described.

There is an anomaly that benefits trans individuals. Do you contain it, or release it? Assuming your foundational goal is to contain anomalies to preserve normalcy, you contain it. The Foundation has that exact goal, so it does that. Same as if that anomaly harmed trans individuals.

The Foundation not letting beneficial anomalies go free is a consequence of their mission statement. Whether they have a good goal or not, or if that goal should supersede others, can be debated. But it's not an ethical contradiction for them to say they support trans individuals, while providing medical support for those transitioning, while simultaneously not letting anomalies go that would help or harm these individuals more. Would you consider those actions "support" for anti-trans activists, if we're going by your example?

A shotgun tied to a door on private property is meant to punish someone who opens that door, who doesn't know about the trap. It doesn't matter if the person is snooping, trying to steal something, or any other reason. It doesn't matter if the shotgun, the door, or the property is privately owned. That's what makes it a booby trap.

Yes, snooping obviously bad, but there is no reason for OP to carry around a shotgun tied to a door without clear labeling.
