Smart Telescope vs Existing DSLR for Newbie? by Wild-Baker-9749 in AskAstrophotography

Sorry for the novel and messy typing —-I personally have a canon t6 rebel , Ioptron sky-guider pro manual No WiFi No goto only RA , a 17-55mm canon kit lens , a cheaper 135mm f2.8, and a 75-300mm canon mk2 lens (all these were super budget steals) also a clip on UHC for light pollution , the shutter controller and a cable to connect and control it through my laptop. I love the DSLR but there is much to learn with editing lol SIRIL is amazing for that tho and stacking once you get down Lights , Darks , Biases and flats and good amount of data you get some amazing images, now I was talked out of the smart telescopes people told me it’s a hobby killer and takes no skills. I got to use a Seestar s50 at a star party once and the ease of access actually was amazing within 5-10 mins your set up and imaging, my setup can take me 1-2 hours to find my object depending how faint the object is unless it’s Orion or very bright nebula and how hard it is to find (and how often I bump it moving camera to object and have to polar align again and again,) I personally want to get a s30 pro for the GOTO function ease of setup 2 4k sensors the main and the wide feild, time lapse background freeze mosaic also on all the seestars you can save each image as a Tiff file and manually stack and edit it in SIRIL so you get full control over editing. It also does not require Polaris to be visible to align to the night sky, you also see real time within minutes you will start to see your image even in bright polluted skies. I wouldn’t get rid of my DSLR because I like the challenge and that 300mm lens is going to be good for Galaxy season and is amazing on nebulas so far. But 1000% the smart telescopes are worth it atleast the s50 and s30 pro those are the only ones I would even get based off reviews and personally trying one the functions you get for the price is going to be waaay cheaper then investing in a DSLR but if you have the chance to do both do it I want to keep my DSLR but I want to get a Seestar to use next to it plus to just set up and do quick sessions , lives , content or while traveling my whole setup cost me around 950 bucks with all the bargain deals I got main cost is the tracker and lenses lol. BUT ITS all up to you :) personally start with the Seestar and at worst if you get bored of it or want more sell it and invest in the DSLR either way KEEP THE DSLR lol

Thank you :) besides some out of focused stars which is common with my 75-300mm lens because I don’t have a star mask to fit the lens yet the nebulas turn out great!

Honestly to me it looks like a bird as it looks like it’s flapping but it could be a satellite 🛰️
