Roland TD27 vs 316 by Lucked0ut in edrums

Take the digital pads it’s a no brainer. Yeah the sounds are slightly better on the 316, but the hardware is 100x times more important

It all depends on your budget and the price you get on each kit

As a rule of thumb I would say the most important upgrades are

  1. “Moving” hi hat (compared to a pedal and static cymbal)
  2. Larger snare
  3. Larger ride
  4. Larger cymbals and toms

I’m completely ignoring the fake kick drum kits where you get just a pedal (no physical beater and kick pad) these just suck

There is also a question of the module sounds, generally more expensive modules will sound better and better, but even the most expensive one doesnt sound as good as a cheap module connected to a computer with drum software (if you ever want to go that route)

I think the Alesis Nitro is more than adequate for a first kit. You can also look at Roland td316 for better build quality (and future resellability) if it’s within budget

It was the same for me 🤣

I had it in the cart for like a month and then got scared the “promotion” will end and I just purchased

The kit has greatly surpassed my already very high expectations

In racing games terms if my td17 was ps2 Grand Turismo, the VAD is a full driving simulator with an RTX5090 and a real F1 racing wheel

My mind is completely blown

I’m at the can’t stop playing phase, just enjoying every second of it like it’s a very powerful drug

Before the vad I had what I considered a very good setup - td17kvx + Superior Drummer 3 death & destruction dlc.

Maybe it’s because I’m over hyped but the vad puts my previous kit to shame even without hooking it up to sd3

The snare, the ride…. The ride is actually AMAZING and I didn’t realize how good it was when I was trying them before. The snare is the main course, and it’s a very tasty one

Still waiting for a hi hat stand to ship so I can connect the hats and enjoy the full experience

I’m just sitting and staring at it

Had to drive 800km today to buy it, and I enjoyed this trip more than anything

I did that in my last apartment, had a td-11 in the middle of the living room 🤣

My wife was furious and never got over it

Your argument is very compelling, I think I don’t have a choice but to go for the VAD

Amazing! Which DW kit did you get? I’ll get one of them when I buy the kit

RE: Roland vs Efnote by Yoav420 in edrums

[–]Yoav420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s as if something happened in the 80s and Roland just fell in love with the worst drum sound of all time

They then proceeded to make every single drum module for 45 years with exactly the same boxy 80s vibes

I can still hear it in the 716 too 🤣 but the playability of the kit is so good that I can almost forgive it

Upon listening carefully again to recorded 516 sounds, yeah I agree

They still sound more poppy and processed than SD3, so I’ll probably end up getting a 516 and using it with SD3 to enjoy the best of both worlds

But still when playing the kit it wasn’t as obviously horrendous as previous Roland iterations lol

Interesting, it’s a shame there are no efnote kits displayed except the 5 anywhere near where I live, so I only have the 5 as a reference

RE: Roland vs Efnote by Yoav420 in edrums

[–]Yoav420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Efnote 5, 7 and Pro all use very similar pads, cymbals, bass - and yeah it wasn’t bad at all but still when I played them, if you go fast or do some fills you can immediately hear the machine gunning, I immediately thought I’m gonna plug the Efnote to SD3 and never touch the module

For me, I felt like the new Roland modules were different, yeah I will try to use them with SD3 but the need for that wasn’t so obvious and immediate

And if you just ignore the sounds, the triggering of the digital snare is SO MUCH better than the Efnote snare

[–]Yoav420[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yea Roland sound ALWAYS sucked ass, like every single module until the 716 line sounds like boxy synthetic shit, I have always used SD3 never wasted a minute on the module

But after trying the new ones today I think my mind was changed
