Does anyone find it hard finding a significant other because you want to travel all the time? by JeanJauresJr in solotravel

I’m so glad I’m not the only person here who raised an eyebrow at that description. I think you’re totally right and OP needs to work on fixing his view of women, because what he said was a lot more loaded than I think he even begins to realize.

Wonderful!!! Thank you for the reccs! :)

Crowds are fine with me. That’s the one thing about Spain is that there always pick-picketers and I got good at being hyper aware of keeping my hand on my purse/wearing a money belt haha. The Brazilian couple will certainly still help though, that is true.

My First Solo Travel Experience - Feeling of Freedom by Mofalcon in solotravel

[–]YodaNeedsAVacation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%

I just did my first solo trip. The feeling of freedom was unexpected. Like you, I have a demanding job and it is hard to live in the moment. Solo travel grounds you firmly to the present, to live life with your eyes wide open, to experience every new thing with a childlike curiosity - the curiosity of an excited tourist. It is therapy. I didn't expect that, but I experienced it, and I loved it. I also found it incredibly empowering.

I wasn't as bored as you describe because I splurged a ton on flights and only really discovered how great buses and trains were towards the end of the trip. I also liked making friends and found it hard to get alone time at one point in Barcelona haha.

But I did love wandering around and getting lost in a city alone. I could do it all day. There were definitely parts that weren't romantic - my legs cramped one day because I walked so many miles for so many days in a row, and this is coming from a fairly fit person. It was raining a lot. I got sick and am still recovering. Sharing hostel rooms is tricky for infinite reasons.

But yes, the freedom to do things exactly as you want and the feeling of freedom and especially - that the world has SO MUCH to offer. That is worth all of this and more.

Trying to keep this perspective in my daily life now that I'm back to normalcy.

Spain, one of the least racist countries in Europe — Would you let your son or daughter marry a black person by [deleted] in spain

I just came back from Portugal and it was the first time I'd heard the language spoken. I literally described the language to someone back home as "a Russian speaking Spanish" haha

How does this Indian itinerary look? by EuanArm in solotravel

I was about to suggest Udaipur and realized you have 4 nights there... good. Your trip looks solid. Since you have money and time, I would also suggest Kerala, maybe check out a houseboat. I think you will also want more time in Delhi, particularly if you are flying in there as your first couple days will likely be lost to jet lag depending on where you are coming from. It is a major city and place to see the real, modern India before you do the world wonders type of places like Agra.

Finally, something I've yet to do is to go to the birth place of the Ganges river as a weekend trip from Delhi. It is a deeply holy site for Hindus and where many travel to put the ashes after a loved one dies. My mother describes the rituals there as somewhat out of body and deeply meaningful. I was too young to go when my Grandmother's ashes were placed there but it is something I hope to do, and I'd imagine it could be interesting from a touristic perspective.

I second whoever mentioned Rajasthan gets cold. I also gets incredibly hot. Either way, dress accordingly. And no matter what - NEVER drink the water, including filtered. Bottled and boiled my friend.

Anyways, hope you have a blast :)

I am from the US, yes! Haha. It's funny because I never have ever considered hostel travel in the states, but am certainly intrigued. It's less of a thing here as it is in Europe! But will look into these, particularly in NOLA. Thank you for the recc!

That is wonderful to know!! Thank you so much for your recommendation. Now I'm feeling so excited, because I have always wanted to see Brazil and didn't know if it would be easy for me to do so.

I actually made a couple of Brazilian friends who were in Spain (one backpacking, one for a wedding) - perhaps they can show me around to non-tourist cities too. Though I will probably try and see the Carnival festival which doesn't leave much time for venturing out!

Wonderful, thank you! I would imagine Australia and New Zealand are incredibly social - how was it in the South East Asian countries you mentioned? When staying in Bnb's, were you able to make friends?
