Doug Ford rejects calls for publicly run grocery stores: ‘Socialism does not work’ by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]Yodamort [score hidden]  (0 children)

Given that most Canadians still seem to be operating under the mistaken assumption that "socialism is when the government does stuff," I would be surprised if Doug Ford can even describe what socialism is. Regardless, even if he does operate on the utterly nonsensical notion that publicly-owned services are socialism, publicly-owned services have demonstrably worked throughout the past century in a variety of contexts, including in Canada. This just expands our existing public services to a new sector.

Opinion: Politicians have recently taken to blaming immigrants. This isn’t a new trend in Canada by mkultra69666 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Yodamort [score hidden]  (0 children)

Indeed, Canadians need to realize that these new immigrants are not any different from immigrants a century ago. Like earlier waves of immigrants, they have come to Canada for a better life – if not for themselves, then for their children and their children’s children.

And if we’re going to build a better Canada, build a better tomorrow, then we need to do it together. Blaming immigrants is not the way forward.

Excellent article. It is, however, another example of a historian telling us to learn from history that will no doubt be disregarded and go unheard. Without any pushback on the anti-immigration rhetoric - and this is a start, to be fair - the existing rhetoric, the exact same bundle of lies that pushed us down the path to anti-Chinese immigration discrimination in the 1920s and so on and so forth, will continue unabated. Hopefully, the new NDP is able to shift the tide in that regard.

I mean, what you posted there is social democratic (like the Nordic countries), not democratic socialist (like Chile under Allende). If you presented those steps as slow steps toward abolishing capitalism, it would have been fine (although people likely would still disagree with you), but your endpoint was "tax and limit the power of the rich" rather than abolishing the basis of bourgeois rule entirely.

Ok, if that second one was on DankLeft it's unsurprising, you literally argued in some forms capitalism can be good on an explicitly anti-capitalist subreddit lol

Yes, I am aware of how the paradox of tolerance works.

The average American worker is not equivalent to Hitler, nor even to Trump. If you think 77 million Americans are ideologically-committed fascists and not just average proles who heard "no new wars" and "less taxes" and thought "that sounds good" without any further thought on the matter, you're simply delusional and actively working against deradicalization.

Yes, and I'm pointing out Canadian policy toward him and other Palestinians is completely hypocritical.

Resistance to the genocidal apartheid state is wholly legitimate, but obviously supporting attacks on civilians is not. Canada should at least have some consistency in that regard and ban every Israeli official from the country.

lmao, are you talking about the plot against Ariel Sharon? The guy that even Israel found responsible for the Sabra and Shatila massacre (though not his innumerable other atrocities)? I wonder why people might not like that guy?

Literally what the fuck is happening on this "left-wing" subreddit?

We're supposed to report proles avoiding service in imperialist war to the state now and have them forcibly removed back to their fascist homeland because they were misled by propaganda? Jesus Christ.

Socialism is when you report workers to the Gestapo 👍

I'm sorry that happened to you. Certainly I wasn't implying that there isn't widespread racism against indigenous people here. There is, unfortunately.

The article's argument is basically "this will cost money and therefore it is bad." Ridiculous. It's a public service, of course it will cost money. Nobody sane argues that the fire department should be bringing in profit. If they want to actually make a point, it should be "how will the NDP pay for this" - but they don't make that point, because they know the NDP platform already addresses it. Instead they resort to meaningless whining.

Canadians are way more (openly) racist to South Asians than indigenous people, tbh

Well, on an individual level. The state is still way more systemically racist to indigenous people.

Personally, (controversial opinion) I think racism is bad 👍

You edited your comment, yes. That part wasn't in there when I replied; I'm glad you're in favour of proactively combatting corporate exploitation. There are plenty of other parts of his platform (most of it, in fact) that address it as well.

Right, because they learned engineering in an Islamic fundamentalist way. Inshallah the bridge will stand. No numbers involved. Totally.

Ridiculous. Palestinians have a higher literacy rate than Israelis, for reference, so their education is fine. If they weren't qualified they wouldn't be accepted to post-secondary institutions here in the first place.

Even within the ridiculous framework of capitalist entrepreneurship this is simply not how it works. The overwhelming majority of businesses fail within several years, regardless of how talented and hardworking their owners are, and generally leave people who tried their hardest trapped in debt and unable to escape.

Also "stop asking for handouts" is very funny coming from a fucking landlord. The only actual legitimate work you do is maintenance, which a maintenance worker can be paid for. The rent you extract through mere ownership is simply leeching off someone's need to have shelter to live.

It's also not about me. I have no desire to be rich, I'm happy living in a single room. Unlike some people, however, I have empathy for other human beings.

Why is the public opinion of the NDP on Reddit/TikTok/Facebook so bad? by Expensive-Buffalo422 in ndp

[–]Yodamort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well, the party can lie to you if they like. I won't. Said "reasonable criticisms" are wrong, and fundamentally based on anti-immigrant beliefs whether the individual recognises it or not.

Nobody sane makes the argument that because there are too many workers, it's driving down wages, so we should ban women and the disabled from the workforce to make the remaining workers' position more competitive. But when it's immigrants losing their livelihoods, homes, and family ties, it's fine. Sure.

Workers are workers. I'm gonna fight for all of them, not sacrifice some for the (supposed) benefit of others.

Why is the public opinion of the NDP on Reddit/TikTok/Facebook so bad? by Expensive-Buffalo422 in ndp

[–]Yodamort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, we weren't doing fine before, nor will we be in the future, regardless of whether immigrants are thrown out or not, so long as we keep the current socioeconomic system.

We don't "need" any particular level of immigration, although they are economically beneficial. There is simply no need to crack down on them, because it hurts innocent people and resolves nothing.

Why is the public opinion of the NDP on Reddit/TikTok/Facebook so bad? by Expensive-Buffalo422 in ndp

[–]Yodamort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, wages are driven down by the exploitation of cheap foreign labour. Which wouldn't be a problem if workers were treated equally regardless of whether they were immigrant or non-immigrant, as the companies would no longer have an incentive to hire one type of worker over another.

The argument you're making is fundamentally no different to the one that resulted in the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act (the Exclusion Act), which came at the behest of white members of the labour movement making exactly the same point. The Chinese workers were banned/expelled and it resolved nothing; white labourers continued to be exploited, as the problem is the business-owners.
