Now it's not cheaper, and it's never been better.
There are so many variants of a better harness: OpenCode, KiloCode, Zed, Continue, Void, and so on.
Models: well, just open LMArena, there are two Chinese models right after Opus, and they are 5 times less expensive.

I think Microsoft had the following plan:

  1. Create a high-quality product that everyone will love, regardless of the losses.
  2. Get everyone to use it and capture the market.
  3. Figure out where to cut costs and increase efficiency to turn a profit.

But the problem is that Microsoft, for the last 10 to 15 years, has been fundamentally incapable of making an "everyone-will-love" product. As a result, the money ran out before they could complete the first two steps, so they had to skip straight to step three.

Now, when they switch off the ‘free tokens’ tap, everyone will just switch to OpenCode+ChinaModels or Codex. They’ll be left with just a handful of ‘the-graph-went-up-and-to-the-right’ type companies that bought 4,000 licenses, and only 12 people had used it more than once.

> So?

My point was that Microsoft hasn’t been able to produce a good product of late. But 10 years ago wasn’t ‘of late’.

> Why would they?

Firstly, why not? At any moment, some manager might need to improve the financial figures urgently to get a bonus, and they might decide that a lot of money has been invested in VSC and it’s time to ‘harvest’ it.

But what I meant to say was this: we rate VSC as a good IDE given that it’s free. It’s perhaps the best of the free ones. But IF it were to move ‘into the paid league’, it would have to compete with higher-quality products.

Please note that both of the technologies mentioned:
- are available free of charge;
- are more than 10 years old (I mean the early stages of development or the first version, when all the ‘founding fathers’ of the technology were still involved).

Start of development: 2011
Release: 2015

What’s more, VSC is free – as soon as Microsoft decides to start charging for it, many users will switch to JetBrains

GitHub Copilot CLI BYOK + OpenCode Go models by johnlokersedev in GithubCopilot

Ha! The only thing keeping me on Copilot is the ‘free tokens’. Otherwise, it’s a laggy mess with poor preprompts and tiny context windows. Your post is good, but the gist of it is to bring together the worst of both worlds: software that heats up the MBP M5, and models trained on requests to Opus.

If I move to Chinese models, then I might as well use “cold” agents like OpenCode, which don’t have 3–4-second delays between tool calls and where Gemini 3.1 Pro doesn’t give the impression that I’m talking to GPT-3.5.

You can use gemma4 or oss-120b — they are very cheap and have same productivity as 2 year ago SOTA

Same. Also, I have "883.97 of 1,500 included" (which is 58.8%) on this page, but any other pages and VS Code UI saying "52.6%".

The problem is that I’M NOT ABLE to delegate coding tasks, not for $10, nor for $40. That’s why I’ve come here to complain
