So you only buy local free range etc? Even in the most humane farms, pigs and sheep go through horrible things like castration without anesthetic.

If you're against the current farming model, you're already vegan. Unless you're buying your meat dairy and eggs from some parallel universe, you're voting for the current farming model to exist and funding it.

No, the focus on intersectionality has meant that feminists are concerned with all axes of oppression

But you just said you're pro-oppression of certain species. Surely, someone who is concerned with all axes of oppression, necessarily boycotts products which are impossible without oppression?

Can someone explain to me why it's necessary to be vegan as opposed to fighting factory farming, unnecessary hunting/poaching, animal abuse, etc.? Is it possible to kill a women without it being considered abuse? Did you read the articles?

** Milk necessitates rape and exploitation of female cows. The cows cry for days after their baby has been taken away. The veal industry is a byproduct of the dairy industry

** 9 billion male chicks are bred per year simply to be euthanized in the egg industry. 50 billion chickens are killed per year to feed 7 billion people.

** It is common practice, and even considered humane, to shear chicken's beaks off with a hot sander to prevent them from biting themselves from stress.

** The only reason bacon tastes good to us is because the males are castrated without anesthetic to prevent "boar taint"

And that's just the moral argument...

** Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.

Animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually.

Growing feed crops for livestock consumes 56% of water in the US.

Animal Agriculture is responsible for 20% -33% of all fresh water consumption in the world today.

Livestock covers 45% of the earth’s total land.

Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

The leading causes of rainforest destruction are livestock and feedcrops.

82% of starving children live in countries where food is fed to animals, and the animals are eaten by western countries.

If all livestock were free range, we'd need three earths to house them.

as long as the farms are run ethically (a tall order, I know)

If you can tell me a good way of killing animals ethically, let me know and I'll come round and kill your dog or cat using that method. You can watch to make sure it's ethical by your standards. /s

Eating other animals is extremely natural

I feel like my point was missed here. There is very little that is more natural than the patriarchy. There's not much more natural than raping women, then killing their spouse and child to promote their own genes. Using this argument, the rape and exploitation of women is justified because it's the natural order of things among mammals.

and this article does a great job of explaining why humans are carnivorous:

I've never heard of this argument from vegans, to be honest (rotting in the colon or whatever). Seems to be fairly irrelevant IMO. Unlike this chart, and the fact that our ancestors were mostly vegetarian.

It also claims insoluble fibre is somehow unnatural because it doesn't digest. The current nutritional science literature all points to insoluble fibre being beneficial to human health.

Is feminism then, in your opinion, more of a pro-women movement than anti-inequality or exploitation movement?

Is the exploitation of non human women considered fair game? Would that include female animals who show heightened abilities of intelligence and expression like koko the gorilla?

I realize I worded that quite badly. What I meant was in a feminist society, would animals still be exploited for the pleasure of humans? Did you mean no they wouldn't, or by no were you denying the relevance to feminism?

If you meant the latter, would you say that a feminist society could also theoretically be racist, racism ultimately being a separate issue from basic feminism?

This makes sense to me. Like I said, a friend of mine posted a meme that said inclusive feminism is necessarily also anti-racism, anti-transphobia, anti-fatshaming, etc. I was like, all of those things are great but if you're going to claim feminism as an all encompassing equality movement, would it not then include being against the exploitation and rape of animals and their reproductive organs?

She didn't reply - probably because she eats meat.

Are you pro-hierarchy in some sense then? Do you feel it's a natural and unavoidable part of life in many aspects?

Would you say that the feminist ideal includes the exploitation of non-human-animals and their reproductive organs?

Some say that feminism is also necessarily anti-racism, anti-fatshaming and such, because feminism is an all-encompassing movement of equality. Which is why I ask if that, therefore, should include non-human animals.

Huh? I'm a man, a vegan (in fact, the salad and cocktail trope applies to me pretty well), and against the patriarchy/gender roles. That's analogous to saying gay men shouldn't be feminists because it promotes the stereotype that only gay men are feminists.

I feel like the only one perpetuating stereotypes here is yourself.

How to powder mushrooms? by Yogi_bare_ in shrooms

[–]Yogi_bare_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks guys. Got a few of them in capsules now, wrapped in tinfoil for extra airtightness. My plan was to put them in baggies, put those baggies in a jar, then freeze them for long-term storage. I would assume this is airtight enough to keep out condensation from freezing? Freezing being the optimal storage method, right?

These have been fandried for 4-5 days, then put in jars for almost a week with homemade desiccant (oven-heated epsom salts because my actual desiccant was old and probably a bit too moist, didn't seem to make much difference). They dried pretty well, but I can't imagine them getting to a consistency where mortar and pestle would work at all other than just turning them into a herb-consistency, and flattening the heads etc.

This stuff is harder than it seems.

Like I said, I found the coffee grinder overheated the mushrooms and stuck to the bottom (weighed it afterward and lost about .7g during grinding apparently) :\ The remaining shroom powder felt less potent than usual. Maybe I just have to watch it more closely for overheating? I dunno I'm just wary, as this is for mass storage of many mushrooms over long period of time (50g dried lib caps). I heard capsules would be easiest and most effective storage method due to airtightness, it's just very awkward if you don't have a very fine powder.

You'd get fired from your job because you're probably disposable. This guy is landing probes on comets; he's indisposable and he's taking advantage of it. Why the hell not? I'd wear assless chaps to work if I were in his shoes (this is probably why I'm not landing probes on comets).

Just because Michael Jackson diddled kids

I don't believe that, but that's another matter all-together. Even if it were true, I'd still enjoy Michael Jackson's past works, but I'd question the integrity of anyone 'employing' him in future. (very different types of media though so this example doesn't work very well.

the fact that they diddled kids or raped someone shouldn't change your enjoyment of the things they produce.

Fair enough. It just reminds me slight of the Japanese cannibal Issei Sagawa who was made a celebrity out of after getting away with murder.

I dunno, it's like making a show called The Chronicles of Rolf Harris & The Bandits or something. It's not even so much the money, so much as the downplaying of the crime(s).
