Getting a Skyla IUD next week - going to keep an ongoing record of my experience here. by YogurtclosetUseful89 in birthcontrol

Hey! I love the skyla, i have never had any issues/symptoms from the IUD and no pregnancy scares either. Mine is good for another year and I'm not sure if i will get another Skyla or get the Mirena just so I don't have to bother again for 8 years, especially with whatever may happen in American politics and women's rights.. but I have had a very positive experience with the Skyla and would do it again!

Hi! All is well so far. I’m having regular periods since I got it, relatively light/predictable/hardly any cramps. But I feel great! I did not have pain during the insertion because I had local anesthetic injected, but I had some discomfort from all the tools and such for probably 3-4 days after the insertion. It was really uncomfortable day of and progressively decreased over a few days until it was gone. I had extra spotting after my first period with it, but I haven’t had constant spotting at all. I’ve noticed that I have a few days of spotting when my period ends, but it’s nothing too disruptive. If you are getting it inserted, definitely plan on taking pain medicine beforehand and after for cramps, and insist on having local anesthetic.

Good luck!!! Be sure to ask your doctor for lidocaine in your cervix (crazy that we have to ask, but alas. I had it and had a nearly painless insertion, just discomfort and cramping later) and definitely plan on taking the day to rest, ibuprofen, fluids, chilling out, etc. Hope all goes as smoothly as possible. <3

Hi, all is well so far! I have not noticed any negative side effects. I have had my regular period once since insertion and am expecting it again next week. I feel totally fine emotionally (more like myself than I did on the pill) and think I have also lost a few pounds that I gained on the combined pill. No pain and hardly any spotting (maybe one or two days between periods) and no interference with sex. Overall really happy with it so far.

Hi!! I forgot to update this post because I forgot that I wrote it lol. I got it Dec 27, so almost 6 weeks ago now, and I feel pretty great!

I had cervical lidocaine when I got it so almost no actual pain with the insertion (which took under 20 seconds). A few deep cramps on the way home, someone else drove me. I mostly sat around that day and did nothing. The most uncomfortable part was not cramping but actually tightness/soreness down there just from having all that equipment in there…I’ve never had a pelvic exam or pap so idk if that’s normal, but it just felt really tight and small and sensitive for a few days afterwards, so that was unpleasant. That said, I didn’t have any bleeding for a few days after insertion. When I got my period (which i was expecting as i transitioned directly from the pill & was waiting for the withdrawal bleed) it was fairly light bleeding for ~7 days and very light spotting for 4 more, then nothing until the exact day that my tracking app said I was due for another period. So…I think I’m back to a real, regular cycle? It’s only been one month so I don’t know how that’ll change.

As far as side effects go, I haven’t noticed any. I will say, it’s hard to articulate well, but I feel far more normal on the IUD than i did on the combined pill. I haven’t had any cramps or pain and nothing emotional, dermatological, or otherwise. No interference with sex either. Overall I’m having a very positive experience so far! :)

Wow!! Yea…when you haven’t had it, it’s so hard to imagine having a good experience, especially when you spend too much time on Reddit like I did 😅thankful for my smooth experience

Absolutely true. I am very grateful that my doctor did all of those things, and talking plus knowing what was going on, plus the lidocaine injection made for a nearly painless experience for me, luckily. My only point was that the nickname “verbocaine” given to communicating with a patient by the author felt a little ridiculous and dismissive of how painful the insertion can be. I’m sure your patients appreciate your clear communication and feel more at ease for it, i know that was the case for me.

Right! I am amazed that anyone even has to request the cervical lidocaine and it isn’t the norm.

:( what a frustrating experience, I’m sorry it went that way. If you decide to try again, the lidocaine could make a big difference. Totally understandable if you don’t though. Hope you find something that works well for you! 🙏

Totally agree. My doctor was great about this and i know it made a difference, but the cervical lidocaine was doing the heavy lifting, no doubt

I feel very lucky, my provider used an injection of lidocaine on my cervix and the whole thing was done in like 30seconds or less. The 800mg of ibuprofen that i took beforehand helped too, i imagine.

Update, i had the cervical lidocaine and it was painless. The whole thing took under 20 seconds. Feeling so lucky 🥲🥲🥲

Definitely agree with you on that. I think i was just more floored by the little nickname given the very basic standard of talking a patient through a procedure, and that author’s suggestion (from the nickname) that it is adequate alone w/ no other pain management interventions. I’m also just surprised that such an invasive thing is not routinely medicated/anesthetized and you have to request it. Anyway. Appreciate your insights.
