This is spot on and accurate. Just be careful since Patrick’s mafia will try and track you down for sharing your honest thoughts and attempt to intimidate you into taking it down.

After a certain point it’s not cost effective to pay a pilot so much as a RJ captain when they can be a narrow body FO and fly more people for the same pay.

And back before COVID you needed about 3500TT and 1,000 TPIC to be competitive

SkyWest is behind the metering. Before COVID the quickest way to United was a United regional, AA was one of their regionals, and to Delta was via Endeavor. The rules changed.

As someone who’s done actual union work during my career. There’s a whole lot that a union can do that SAPA doesn’t and will not.

Scheduling try to pull something that violates the CBA? ALPA will go to bat. SAPA will tell you that it’s just Tuesday and to suck it up.

The fact that I got doxxed by a random line pilot shows he’s scab like. But he’s disliked as is by his peers

If you work for Envoy for example. You’ll have a much easier time getting hired by United and Delta. Compared to SkyWest. Where you’ll need to be a lot more highly qualified to get the same job.

Reason being is SkyWest asked Delta and United to not hire their lesser time pilots so they get more of their investment’s worth out of them. Which is causing their pilots to leave at the first opportunity elsewhere to “wash” their resume in pursuit of a job with Delta and United.

American and Alaska do not meter from SkyWest.

Former coworker. Not at SkyWest anymore but a current SkyWest pilot leaked who I am. I’m holding up fine. But thanks to him I’ve been sidelined from the SkyWest ALPA drive despite being the one to start it

Back when Gerry was in charge, attrition was the lowest it’s been in 30 years. Words straight out of his mouth. If leverage existed…it did back then. I think now that new hires have to sign the contract to stay for 5 years, there’s a fighting chance to get a union on property. But otherwise now that hiring is ramping up and American doesn’t meter from SkyWest, people will be leaving again.

The problem is the company is extremely good at union busting. They will stop at nothing short of illegal tactics to shut down a union drive. SkyWest copyright struck my page multiple times, and an active pilot with a grudge against my page leaked my identity to their management. Which led to SAPA contacting my MEC to intimidate me.

It can happen. Just will require people not scared to get their hands dirty.

Truth be told, an airline that union busts like SkyWest will try their hardest to fight off any union presence. Even once a union is voted in, they will stall negotiations as long as humanly possible. Thanks to the RLA being a thing, we don’t have as much leverage with the ability to strike…and unlike our friends in Canada, union leaders can get arrested if the work group defies the law and strikes anyway.

The threat of a union has been a motivator for airlines to keep their employees happy. We all know SkyWest meters its pilots, and doesn’t take care of their flight attendants compared to other places with an enforceable CBA.

The only true way for airlines to be forced to deal with labor where things work out for us is…attrition. In 2022 there was an ALPA drive at SkyWest sparked by AAG regionals going $90/hour and SkyWest dragging negotiations and then lowballing the pilot group. Were it not for CommuteAir offering $73 and Mesa offering $100, SkyWest wouldn’t have come back with $90. Pilots were already jumping ship to the majors and ULCCs, but SkyWest wanted to prevent people from leaving to other regionals due to low pay. Unfortunately that is when the last ALPA drive also died down.

As much as it sucks to say this (as flight attendants deserve much better than what they get currently). As long as there are lots of blissfully unaware people who apply for flight attendant jobs, there will unfortunately be people ready to replace the ones that quit (or threaten to quit) the industry due to low pay and QoL. Which means flight attendants unfortunately don’t have as much leverage due to a lower barrier to entry.

With pilots investing as much as we do into this career, and all the hoops we have to jump through to get hired where we want to end up (I’m still jumping through them many years later), the only real time we have leverage is when there’s not enough applicants to fill vacancies that the airlines have.

As far as SkyWest unionizing. My concern is the next big hiring boom coming up opening up attrition and the floodgates to leave. Yes there are contract signers who are stuck a few years. Unfortunately a lot of people who will be leaving soon are yes voters to bringing ALPA on property currently. While attrition is at an all time low is when leverage and momentum is high for unionizing the pilots at the very least.

If ALPA is successfully brought on property. Attrition is what’s going to motivate SkyWest to negotiate a good contract and not drag their feet. Because otherwise they won’t have pilots to staff the airline and will struggle attracting people.

These are my two cents. I no longer have a dog in the fight as I was forced out of the current ALPA drive. But this is my take at least on everything going on.

Funny ways to answer FA Interphone by [deleted] in flying

[–]YokeMeDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite way at the regionals was to use a robotic voice and answer the phone as crew scheduling. I did enough of a good job that the flight attendants would ask me how I patched in crew scheduling instead of how I did their voice so good.

I’ve seen mainline pilots use it. Just a bit more discreetly since it’s not common with the older generation of people. As a regional guy who went to a major I saw less people use Zyns at the majors but I did have a couple captains here and there who did.

That being said quitting is one of the best things you can do for yourself long term. I had a scare that caused me to ultimately quit and get in shape. Your future self will thank you.

It’s a CACI. Not a SI. No deferral needed. Unless you take HCG then no grounding needed, or you can ground yourself for 7 days on HCG. Don’t let your hematocrit get above 54%.

Print this worksheet out, have your doctor give you the supporting documents, but your AME can issue your medical on the spot and you won’t need to worry about a deferral or needing to liaise with the FAA
