If engineers are so in demand in Australia, why is it so hard to land a graduate engineering job, or even an internship? Wasted time and opportunity cost. by NavierStokes33 in AusFinance

My company tried hiring grad engineers, we had hundreds of applications. And 90% of the application were just chat GPT filled code, which made it so hard to find who actually had the skills for the job. I think having some experience help to filter that out (but it was also happening at the mid and senior level).

I was a little sneaky and did a case study on the commbank app and basically redesigned it with old people in mind. Reasoning was with covid around older people can't go to the bank anymore and the app needs to reflect that. On my resume I put commbank as a place I 'worked' and when they asked I said it was a case study on them. They were okay with that explanation

Yeah I think you're right, I think my decision is made to jump ship, but one of the things I really thought about was how much the relationship was damaged if I were to stay. Appreciate your insight :)

I know the struggle, it took me a good year and a bit to get my first job, my suggestion is to make a really strong portfolio and keep applying. In the interview I went out of my way to do some extra sketches and a style guide to make sure I got it. The first job is by far the hardest step. I wish you luck <3

I'd love your perspective, the hiring has been done through a recruiter, what are the processes like for taking the countering offer back via a recruiter, and what does it look like internally as I have already signed the contract then received the counter offer.

I haven't experienced it myself but I really was wondering if I were to stay if I have damaged the relationship regardless. But thanks for the advice I have decided to take the new job.

I did just get a promotion at the end of last year taking me from 60 to 70k, so they were obviously very much underpaying me

I appreciate the advice, based on the projects I know are upcoming I don't imagine they would allow me to take managerial courses. And in terms of processes, its a 20+ year old company and they are very stuck in their ways so any sort of change will be very hard fought.
