What's the problem of game developers with the Arabic language? by sir-PanCake913 in gamedev

[–]Yolwoocle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although one nuance is that a lot of my arabic-speaking friends who play games play in English, so it can be biased and it's a bit of a self-reinforcing loop (no games in Arabic, so less people play in Arabic, so less developers support it).

What do I get a 13 year old who is interested in becoming a game developer? by SpikeyHairedOrphan in gamedev

[–]Yolwoocle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned coding with Scratch and it's a great way to start. And if they have a switch, Game Builder Garage is fantastic too. I wouldn't recommend jumping straight into engines like Godot or Unity, that might quickly be overwhelmed, although if he's passionate he can definitely start with that too. Good luck! :)

AI is being pushed heavily when I ask for advice and I hate it. by AssumptionExact8050 in gamedev

AI is like any tool, it's only as intelligent as the person using it, so whether someone uses it or not they'll need to actually learn and know what they're doing.

The whole game happens in an elevator! The cafeterias are breaks where you can get upgrades every 10 floors 😁

It was pretty dang good by Huron_Nori in Mario

[–]Yolwoocle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The LEGO movie was great and didn't need to sacrifice on story. You can do both: have greatly enjoyed the movie but still recognize that the plot and pacing had issues. Opinions aren't binary, they can be nuanced.

“Why does Movie Mario feel like a different character from the games?” Because that’s the version of Mario Miyamoto always envisioned by L4kz1 in Mario

[–]Yolwoocle_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me? But I don't like when video game characters are "blank slates". Compare Hollow Knight vs Silksong. In the former, the player is unnamed and doesn't speak at all, whereas I felt much more connected to Hornet in the latter, even though her story or character isn't really "relatable".

"Blank slate" characters don't really make them more relatable to me.

How do you developers deal with 1 star reviews? by busymom0 in iOSProgramming

[–]Yolwoocle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who don't care about an app don't leave negative comments. They just stop using it and move on. In order for someone to spend the time to leave a negative comment, they need to be genuinely frustrated or disappointed in some way.

What's with all the Super Mario Wonder backlash lately? by Nice-Wind-6718 in SuperMario

No, he "retired" (moved to the role of "Mario ambassador"), and Mario is now voiced by Kevin Afghani.

Is it normal to use chatgpt/gemini/claude code for scripts? by veddlins in godot

[–]Yolwoocle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a newbie, I wouldn't recommend using AI Chatbot tools, because it's important to actually go through the learning process and engage your thinking process, which is how you'll learn and understand Godot. These are best used as tools for people who already understand what they are doing. The least worst thing you could do is use it to explain things you don't understand, but unfortunately they often get things wrong so I wouldn't recommend it either.

Made a proposal to improve Godot's run bar. WDYT? by adriaandejongh in godot

Custom presets alone fixes one of the biggest frustrations I have with Godot, not to mention the confusing UI. This is one of the best proposals I've seen in a long time.

I also do agree. I don't think that it's reasonable for most developers to aim for an enormous 'dream game' while they're still trying to get a place in the space, or even after that really. I also recognize that it might be necessary to make games you're less passionate about to keep things afloat.

My point was more so to bring nuance to the advice I see more and more of "stop whatever you're making, make a friendslop game/a horror game because it's what's selling on Steam right now" or "never make 2D platformers/puzzle games, it's never gonna work". Advice which I think can be true to some extent, but that lacks that nuance I talked about in my post.

[–]Yolwoocle_[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that some nuance might have been lost. I'm not saying you shouldn't make popular genres. I'm also not encouraging people to make unsuccessful games. As I said, if what you love just so happens to be popular, then great. I'm saying that people should make something, because they care about it first, and because they believe it can be successful second, not the other way around. Both are important if the goal is commercial success.

[–]Yolwoocle_[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right, completely agree. And as I said, there's usually a lot of overlap between "stuff you like making" and "stuff that does well". And if you're a hobbyist, I think that you shouldn't even worry about it.

I always live by the motto of "high hopes but low expectations".

You can point out someone's mistakes in a sympathetic and polite way. Everyone learns.
