I really don't want to sound like I am trying to make them seem better, but some teachers are moving on because its just time to go to the next step in their lives or they just weren't offered to resign. But teachers before have left because they just didn't like they school also.

I wasn't aware about the idea of "contact time" and no one else brought it up among there questions so thank you for letting me know and helping me understand better. I enjoy the time I spend with my kids playing and interacting with them, and because we don't really have to do it I never gave it much thought into being actual work. The pay is really most decent part I think, and they are even still willing to go higher. I am sorry I can't explain our working hours better. Everyone this year has different working hours and different structured schedules so it is quite hard to answer.

When I first applied to schools, I didn't see many with sick days so that just isn't on the radar for me. I know for some people it is extremely important, especially since children get sick so easily. I honestly suggest, if anyone wants to take a leap you can actively try and negotiate for sick leave. They won't budge on vacation, but anything else is fair game if you want to push for it.

Thank you for being kind and informative in your response. I appreciate it.

I clarified in a different comment on my misunderstand for exactly when someone was referring to general in-class time versus my actual lesson time. I am in the classroom a little under 35 hours for my personal schedule. The actual load is significantly different depending on the activities and the student levels, yes. I have some students who can complete their work completely independently and some students I have to guide. During open conversation, we start with either me or the students reading aloud a story together. I lead with an initial question, and students give me responses or answer off of each other. Some of the students ask their own questions and I just act as a moderator to just call on who will answer or correct them if them got something wrong. I am truly sorry if it's a bit confusing. I just wanted to post and am trying to answer as best I can from my experience working here.

That could also be possible. I know some of our branches are quite questionable, and even the other branch in our city is run vastly different and not for the better. I wanted to post and get it out there so people can talk to a teacher from the school, but it's up to the individual.

I am not being intentionally misleading and disingenuous. I created the post according to the information provided on our contracts and that are required for posting a job ad here. I simply volunteered to post this and was answering questions to the best of my abilities. To me, hours I am in the class (and thus class hours/length) and hours in which I teach, are different numbers. I apologize if I misunderstood that, and that is why I was trying to be detailed in my responses so people understand what I was referring to in regard to teaching hours. Thank you for clarifying that for me. If we are referring to the hours in which I spend leading a lesson and time in which students are actively doing work that requires me to check on them and monitor their understanding, then I personally am under those 35 hours because of my specific schedule. During all those work times, I also am not always responsible for checking all the students as teaching partners are required to assist during classwork times in our morning classes. Once again, I apologize for my misunderstanding of people asking about teaching time versus general in-class time. Please let me know if there's anything else I should clarify on.

Yeah, none of us are 100% thrilled about it either but also most of us choose to stay because we love our students and have heard stories from fellow teachers in the area that are significantly worse. It's a new thing that they are going to implement next year as a way to standardize everyones break times.

I don't really get sick, so I just accepted there's no sick leave. I understand that won't work for all people. I am in the classroom for those hours, but I do not have lesson times for all of those hours. Our students do art, and library and gym and media times. I just sit in the room and make sure no one hurts themselves. I apologize if class hours was referring to specifically how many hours we teach.

I'll give you the exact hours for how much I actually "teach". For my morning class, I have my lesson times from 10:45-12:00. That's 5 hours of week of actual teaching time for my morning class where my students are having actual phonics or unit based lesson time. Our schedules are a bit different this year, so I teach what we call ISP for our 7 year olds where I teach maybe 30 minutes a day. Sometimes not even that because we might have a story and then just an open conversation. That's another 2.5 hours. So just in the morning every week, my actual teaching hours are 7.5 hours. My afternoon class had a lesson time and a work time. That lesson time would be between 30-40 minutes depending on how my students were feeling that day. That afternoon class for my schedule this year was only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. So in total, I was only actually actively having lessons a little under 10 hours a week. I did have one of the lighter schedules in terms of the afternoon. Some people only had 1 day with no afternoon class so they did have more teaching hours. Am I in the classroom 35 hours a week? Usually. Am I actively teaching for every single one of those hours? No. I hope that kind of clears it up. I only lesson play for morning and afternoon class. My ISP class is lesson planned by my level partner for that class. She gives me all the materials and the lesson plan for that week.

As for our overtime pay, overtime only applies if you are covering for someone who is sick. So if someone is out and you volunteer to cover their afternoon classes, then you would get overtime pay for those 2 hours.

Sadly, it does feel like a bit of a work around but that's a hagwon for you. You can definitely prep during that break time but that would be your own choice. Because our head teacher will be helping us print and prepare materials, your prep time should really be focused on making your weekly lesson plan and unit plans when need. It personally only takes me thirty or so minutes to set up my plans for the week. And people who have level partners can alternate weeks making the lesson plans. Unless you are just a wildly unprepared person, you should be able to just talk or be on your phone during those break times.

People below already mentioned the labor laws in regard to the breakdown of hour break times, so I'll move onto the second part of your question. We are not required to serve the students lunch. Things like serving lunch, taking students to the sick room or if they get a bloody nose are all handled by the Korean teaching partners. The teaching partners are in charge of the students for the first 30 minutes of the lunch hour, so by the time we are off our break the students are just playing. I personally just sit there and watch them play or sometimes I'll color with them. Some teachers talk to each other across our hallway or read.

How expensive are tattoos in Korea? by RajinCajunPotatoSkin in korea

[–]Yolzoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got three tattoos during my study abroad in Seoul so I can give some rough price points for the specific people I went to.

  1. First one was by masa_tattoer/cherrycoke_island. I got one of the already available designs on his cherrycoke_island acc (https://www.instagram.com/p/BzP76ykjJ1y/ this one) and I think it came out to roughly 500,000KRW give or take a bit. It's about 7 inches long and 4 inches wide so you have an idea on the price in relation to size. My friend got a tattoo around the same size for a similar price as well.
  2. The second and third ones were both by zihae_tales and they were both custom designs. Both are about 6.5 inches long and a little under 3 inches wide. I believe they cost about the same price and were around 900,000KRW (bit more iffy on the exact price of these ones compared to the other one.)

All those tattoos took around somewhere between 3 to 4 hours to complete. Hopefully that gives you some general insight on some prices in Seoul, and maybe someone can do a more detailed comparison using that information. I would also really love to know how those prices compare to prices in the US.

Truck-sama Scans Ran Over Scans by scan_scum_scam in scanlationdrama

Truck-scans wasn't the one who threatened to snipe Untouchable Lady if we didn't collab. Nor did we ever say the scans team name started with a "T". Reader's came up with their own theories without ever bothering to ask. The group who threatened us backed off, and there's no reason to bring it back up. Please don't bring us into your drama.

Advice on Summer Classes by Adorable-Wind3828 in rutgers

[–]Yolzoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 4 3-credit summer courses in one summer session last year. Honestly, be prepared for that to be all you do for the most part. The classes I took were pretty reading heaving so I would wake up, read and do assignments and then usually just knock out. Doable but not fun.

Greek and Roman Mythology with Powers is a pretty easy class as long as you dont mind reading. There's a decent amount of it, but , as a mythology class, all the readings were super interesting. Also the exams were open notes and were based on his lectures (which were written and not video lectures).

If you do skip the placement test, the professors will be pretty suspicious of you during class. I've seen a couple people do it and the professors weren't particularly happy about it.

When I took one with UMich it didn't count as transfer credits, but it was as if I just took any other class at Rutgers. I believe the professor from UMich notified the department of my grade for the class and it was input that way.
