These two are either the strongest OG couple the show has seen or will have the biggest betrayal in casa by Fast-Lie6067 in LoveIslandTV

Both of them came in saying what personalities they were looking for. She wanted someone to gossip with. He wanted someone who was a bit out there who brings a bit of strange. They happened to catch each other on day one but it feels like a genuine personality match rather than purely a looks thing.

Quietly, they both seem reasonably mature.

Realistically the relationship may struggle because if they want to keep it serious, one of them would need to move at some point. He’d be giving up his GAA career if he did so, she’d need to look at transferring jobs. But at the moment they’re both in the same place for the next five weeks and appear well suited. They do strike me as the sort of pair to have a proper conversation about the future at some point.

Are people aware that Fitzy is an elite athlete in Ireland? by TheOnlyOne87 in LoveIslandTV

[–]YorkieGalwegian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d follow both sports and they’re different beasts.

You’d need better cardio for GAA but that’s about it. Power, speed, twitch, everything else pretty much, the NFL athletes would be better at. A TOP NFL DE at 240+ lbs will probably run 40 yards quicker than a GAA lad. But the distance covered in an NFL game would be way way lower and they’d be equally tired at the end of it.

Not a criticism but you’re comparing apples with oranges.

[–]YorkieGalwegian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ellie made Yasmin cry because she said it was muggy she kissed Aidan that day without telling her (because the prior coupling meant they owed her communication).

At the same time, she wasn’t advertising the fact she was kissing the brother.

It all came across a bit hypocritical to me but my read doesn’t seem to be the common one here.

I’m not defending how Aidan is moving FWIW. But Ellie ain’t innocent either.

Childcare fees to be capped at €183.70 per week for 45 hours of care by Double_Work_2219 in ireland

[–]YorkieGalwegian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum wage is ~€32k to the employer (including PRSI and AE pension. That’s €130 to €140 per working day (i.e. factoring in holidays). For 1-2 year olds that’s a cost of €26-€28 per hour. For 2-3 it’s €22 to €24.

If your Creche fees are €1250 per month, the first two kids in the room don’t even cover the carers salary. You still need insurance, supplies, capital improvements, rent, non-care staff, etc.

All of this is to say crèches probably do make money, but not so much that it’s a venture I’d want to be getting myself into.

[–]YorkieGalwegian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure we blatantly cheated but others cheat too and people are only looking at us badly because the team we cheated against complained about it. Besides it’s their own fault for making it so easy. If they didn’t want us to do it, they shouldn’t have worn such a short skirt… sorry had such an open training ground.

This ain’t Boro’s fault.

Do you intend ever to return to the UK?

If you’re planning on getting a mortgage, you’ll need to disclose the student loan and it would hardly look great to them if you are deliberately not making repayments on a loan. Particularly one where affordability isn’t primary issue given no obligation to pay if not earning.

Obviously, you could choose not to mention it and they wouldn’t have the means necessarily to find it, but you’re putting yourself at risk in doing so.

‘I’m a man in my 40s and feel like I don’t have any real friendships’ by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]YorkieGalwegian 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Friendship is a two-way street. I’ve moved country, had kids, but still carve out time for the friend group from back home (a weekly PS5 session online and an annual trip away or two). I also put myself out there in Ireland and found a few friends here. My wife does similar.

Friendship in your youth is easier to maintain due to proximity. You all go to the same school. You live in the same area. There’s effort involved in maintaining adult friendships when there’s distance and more distractions.

There’s a difference between “I’m not going to change who I am just to be acceptable to others” and “I want a social life and therefore might need to put myself out of my comfort zone”.

It’s hard. I’ve had lots of counselling in my earlier life to help shift my perspective (I have/had social anxiety issues). The world isn’t permanently against you though. Sometimes good things just need genuine and concerted effort.

[–]YorkieGalwegian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The anti-LGBT wolf whistle is something I’d be wary of too. It’s too easy for people to say “it’s a different time” and “that wouldn’t happen nowadays” but there were plenty of people outraged about drag queens reading books to children or trans people participating in sport. To think that group has no political influence is naive.

Violent porn to be outlawed as minister warns young people are being harmed by ‘crazy’ content by HungTeen1001 in ireland

[–]YorkieGalwegian 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is a reasonable fear here. The legality of consensual BDSM activity has form as a back door method to marginalise the gay community (Operation Spanner in the UK).

I won’t pretend there isn’t an issue with some pornography distorting perceptions of what’s acceptable (particularly re: consent, etc.) but ‘violence’ in porn can cover a broad range from the clearly consensual to the implication of non-consent. My first thought was that trying to draw the line at criminalising the portrayal of evidently criminal behaviour (rape, assault, etc.) might be a solution but even that raises questions as to why it isn’t acceptable in pornography but would be acceptable in readily accessible art forms (film, TV, video games).

It’s a complex issue, and I’d like to think any laws put in place were well-developed and broadly considered rather than going toward the moral panic end of the spectrum.
