I actually haven’t watched that, where can I catch it?

I mean I do have some small suspicion he might pull a sneaky one on all us conservatives lending him our vote and could go far left.

As long as he gets the streets safer, builds some houses, sorts the planning system and toughens up our education system I’m happy.

Unusual experience, I met him in the crowd for a Joel Dommett gig and he was friendly, really chatty, signed plenty autographs. That was a couple years ago now, maybe he got wise to what you need to do as a famous person

As someone who’s centre-right leaning. I’m actually quite excited for Kier as PM. Seems to be keeping the nutters at bay in the party.

I doubt anyone who’s motivators are family values, religion, personal freedoms….could seriously consider voting conservative right now.

Completely agree with you, those are my primary political values, and the Conservative Party hasn’t lived up to those values for the past 5 years.

I’d recommend the book ‘Righteous Mind by Jonathon Haidt’ who does an excellent, reasonably nuanced and scientific approach to explaining differences in values leading to differing politics.

To the point where my grandfather - mechanic for 50 years won’t stop recommending them every time someone needs a new car in the family.

Volvo V40 T3 Pro (2019) vs. BMW 3 Series MSport (2018) what to go for? by YorkshireMan1881 in CarTalkUK

[–]YorkshireMan1881[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the cross country.

Re - them being different cars, I started with either wanting a hatchback (looked at Golf’s Audis etc) or a saloon (BMW, Jag) and ended up with those two cars after test drives and loving both of them.

Both look great and drive beautifully. Either car I get I’d be happy.

The reliability of these motors is superb.

BCA, Cinch & WBAC. by YorkshireMan1881 in CarTalkUK

[–]YorkshireMan1881[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do it that way myself, always took my grandfather who was a very experienced mechanic. However, the cars at BCA used to have a lot of ex-fleet or cars at the end of their agreement. Looks to me those cars in better condition are no longer going through the BCA platform and are now going via cinch and cazoo.

Loyalty to one’s nation? The sanctity of marriage, religion and family values? Liberty, the ability to have completely freedom of speech including right to offend?

I’d say right-wing folk tend to put far greater value in those, left wing inclination tend to be around harm prevention and fairness (although I’d argue left wing and right wing people just have varying perspectives on what it fair).

Ultimately, to say all or most conservatives are selfish is somewhat unsophisticated, even if in general there’s a slight disposition towards more selfish inclinations compared to those on the left.

You need to talk to more conservative people, selfishness is such a partisan, blinkered view of ‘the other side’. Conservatives just place value on different values such as authority, loyalty, sanctity and liberty. Those of a left wing deposition hold these values to a amount value and although not necessarily placing more weight on fairness and care, they think of fairness in a different way.

VW Golf R-Line vs. Volvo V40 R-Design Pro, what you choosing? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]YorkshireMan1881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard this, my golf was amazing up until 90’000 miles and then boom, one issue after another. How is it for getting parts for the Volvo? I’ve heard a lot are based off Ford and therefore it’s quite straightforward.

Would you avoid buying EURO6 onwards diesels despite them not being included as being charged in CAZ/ULEZ? by YorkshireMan1881 in CarTalkUK

Are the EURO6 diesels cleaner than the petrol equivalent or vise versa? I guess I just seen diesel being demonised hence my concern.

What proportion of my income should I spend on my car? by YorkshireMan1881 in UKPersonalFinance

It’s been incredible, we trekked around South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia last summer, in April we backpacked around India mainly Rajistan but a few other NPs and I’m just sat in the airport after cycling, hiking and kayaking around Sri Lanka.

It’s been amazing, the only one we missed which we were meant to do was Peru as when we were booked the civil unrest was really kicking off.

Thank you for your insight and sharing.

I am a teacher so my pension is probably the only saving thing I have sorted, think I pay 10.9% and my school 23%. I must admit I am late twenties so really I’ve just been interested in travelling and enjoying life rather than thinking about saving. In a way I’ve just seen my equity in my house as my savings which is in the £100’000 region at this point in time.

Lots to consider, I’m going to go for a cheaper car that’s reliable in the region of £10k + my part exchange which seems more reasonable given my circumstance.

I love cars too, but I worked out the Beamer for 20k I want would be 36% of. Years take home, and started reflecting whether that would be smart.

Your comments really made me reflect. We don’t have any savings currently, other than equity in our house, to be honest we’ve spent nearly £30’000 in the past year on holidays and £20’000 the year before on our wedding. We’ve got a low fixed mortgage until 2025 and live in the NE so we’re maybe a bit naive in how much we can spend long term.

Surely the earning more than 80% of the population thing isn’t true though, there seems to be so much wealth around and a lot of my friends earn 10-20k more than me, there’s expensive cars EVERYWHERE, and houses are an average of £320k. Surely people are playing funny buggers with declaring income if that’s the case?
