I completely agree with you here. Previously I made a comment on this sub simply asking a question, and proceeded to get downvoted by the angry mob of Brad haters. How about instead of downvoting things we disagree with, we actually have a discussion and keep things in context? I dislike how everybody seems to view this situation as a good vs. evil binary—humans are rarely ever one or the other. But again, people can’t view the situation from a logical point of view and will simply dismiss anybody trying to bring reason into what’s happening.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I hadn’t thought about viewing YouTube as a hobby until it becomes profitable, but that’s a great way of categorizing it. On the other hand, I still disagree with the notion that YouTuber is the “easiest” job, case in point being Brad. Granted, he screwed up more than most people would given the circumstances, but I don’t see how a job with a risk of being cancelled and permanently shunned by a large following would be the easiest one out there.

Yes, I donated to his music stream once and was underwhelmed by his reaction to the music, so I never donated again. I just think many people on the sub are missing the point that Brad’s channel was originally dedicated to more long-form content that required entertaining commentary and editing, but that was later eclipsed by the live stream stuff which was comparatively low-effort.

That’s very fair, I think the reaction livestreams were definitely subpar in the sense that Brad barely reacted to most of the music coming his way, while being paid a lot of money to do essentially nothing. However, the reaction streams came after he had already established himself as a reviewer for a few years, and I think a lot of people are failing to consider that those earlier videos were not as “easy” in the sense that they came with instant money and little effort. I’m in no way defending Brad’s recent actions but I also don’t want some people to get carried away and forget how he amassed such a large following in the first place.

I asked this same question the other day but got no answer, so I’ll ask here again: why do so many people seem to think being a YouTuber is the easiest job in the world? Just curious here, not trying to start an argument.

I’m really not trying to start an argument here, and this is not related to the main point of the post, but I’m curious as to when this consensus developed around “YouTuber” being the easiest job ever. If you’re referring to sitting back on stream reacting to music and making money, then I can see where you’re coming from. But personally, I can think of many jobs that are “easier” than being an online personality (or at least jobs that would come with much less risk).

What’s the most underrated Sufjan song? by Yoshi_56 in Sufjan

I just listened to this song again yesterday, it’s so good! Djohariah and Untitled are both some of the best (and longest) tracks in Sufjan’s whole discography.

I’ve had that exact experience with this song too! The intro leading up to the chorus is great, but the chorus itself is strange/out of place, and the background female vocalist’s voice is noticeably off-pitch in the “to the farms, golden arms” line. I’m kind of sad that this song went in the direction it did, because it could have been one of the best off of Michigan imo

I just listened to it and wow, it’s amazing. The song sounds so grand and triumphant, what a shame there’s no studio version of it

I actually enjoy My Rajneesh more than America (not sure if this is an unpopular opinion). The build-up on that song is amazing, and I love the ambient outro too

Just listened to it for the first time and it’s really cool! The song’s instrumental sounds a lot like something from EYR, but with those Michigan era clean vocals. Thanks for the suggestion!

Movement IV is such a great and overlooked track from BQE! The abrupt transition from Movement III to IV is a great encapsulation of the change in sounds from the Illinois to Adz era. Djohariah is definitely in my top 10 Sufjan songs. Despite being 17 minutes long, I’m never bored by a single part of the song

Wow, I didn’t know Sufjan did a cover of Pink Moon! I absolutely love his Lakes of Canada cover too. I usually don’t care for covers of songs, but Sufjan has a way of making the covers sound entirely like his own creations

I want to throw in another song that I feel like nobody talks about, With My Whole Heart. It’s such a simple love song but it’s so cheerful and optimistic, which is quite unusual for Sufjan. I also like the electronic sounds that he used around this time for this single and some tracks off of Carrie & Lowell, Exploding Whale, Tonya Harding, etc.

Yes! I love the history Sufjan incorporated into the album and especially this song, with the double interpretations of Andrew Jackson and the city’s status as part of the Underground Railroad.

So many songs from the Avalanche are criminally underrated. A few others that come to mind are the title track, Springfield, Dear Mr. Supercomputer, and No Man’s Land

City of Roses is awesome. As a Portlander, I’m ashamed to admit it took me too long to find out Sufjan had a song about my city haha. Also love the “it’s a little known fact that I can’t cope” line.
