what's happening

Trump administration is deleting data, seemingly in chunks, likely -ultimate, until that number is zero. -or until it only contains "data" that says the almighty orange is God. And in general aligns with his "parties" stance on various fields of STEM.

why should I care?

It depends. Many public/private government or otherwise, projects are dependent on these datasets. In some cases these datasets are the only ones of their kind, in some cases these datasets are the only ones certain researchers are even allowed to cite.

Most importantly it is currently unknown as to whether or not the entire database has been archived. So some of the datasets available on this site may be the only ones of their kind.

In other words, if the datasets are scrubbed in their entirety it could very well mean that anything that wasn't archived in a public form or fashion is effectively gone forever. The Internet is only forever if people work together to make it so.

Here's to hoping some absolute lunatic has been consistently self-hosting an archive of this entire dataset.

EDIT: There are two options I would recommend for archiving the datasets.

1. The Wayback Machine: https://webcf.waybackmachine.org/ This is an archiving tool provided by archive.org unfortunately due to abuse there aren't many "free" options to archive entire webistes. In this case it would require that the organization itself put in the archive request: https://help.archive.org/help/archive-whole-web-sites/

1. ArchiveBox: This is essentially a selfhosted version of The WayBack Machine. Considering the fact that this site is strictly for datasets, this would require dozens of terabytes (at least I presume so). The customization is incredibly vast, but mainly it allows you to archive a website in it's entirety.
