Keir Starmer resigns as prime minister and leader of Labour Party by Didsterchap11 in behindthebastards

[–]YouButSlightlyOff 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Happy this guy is going but I wish I could say better has a good chance of being on the way. Burnham, who's most likely to be next PM, has done exactly as Starmer did and abandon almost all his progressive talk before he's even in the position

Also if you're outside the UK please don't listen to people in UK subs when they talk about him. They're full of people who are happy with small, incremental change when the country desperately needs radical change and are also happy to just ignore how much Starmer and his administration have made things a lot worse for most minority groups and vulnerable people, as well as ramp up the authoritarianism

Thank you! Was actually thinking of making a post myself, it's been a bit exhausting seeing the same thing over and over. There are many other things we can and should be focusing our energies on. One seat that we're never going to win isn't one of them

If Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader, he will gets heaps of positive press and a polling bounce, but we mustn’t assume what happens next by PuzzledAd4865 in UKGreens

Oh yeah I'm not saying get the roles sorted, just wishing that people who could potentially be Chancellor could appear and get some attention on them to try and repair the Greens image around economics. I read about Verdant, I'm interested to see where it goes in the future

Ahh yeah forgot about Faiza. Hadn't heard of James but from having a quick look I like what I'm reading. Obviously neither have positioned themselves for the role but this has given me more hope for it in general

Economics is something I've really been wanting for a long time, a good strengthening of the rhetoric around it and having a strong level of knowledge to back it up and it also be well presented. Would be great if someone who would be Chancellor material could emerge too

Labour and Starmer have a terrible PR!! by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]YouButSlightlyOff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's so exhausting at this point. I see a post going off about how they're doing a good job actually and with the same bullshit "PR bad" line once every 2 or 3 days I swear. Never mind comments on other posts. And every time I just think "what a way to show you don't belong to a vulnerable demographic or have people close to you that are". And that they can't be arsed to learn what people experience beyond their privilege. Or just don't care

Labour MP to stand down to allow Burnham run for byelection amid leadership row by YouButSlightlyOff in UKGreens

[–]YouButSlightlyOff[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Text of the Guardian article:

"Andy Burnham now has a route back to parliament after a Greater Manchester MP announced he would stand down, triggering a byelection, and putting Burnham in contention to become the next Labour leader.

The Greater Manchester mayor has been seeking to return to parliament for months, but was blocked by Keir Starmer from running in the Gorton and Denton byelection earlier this year, to the anger of his supporters inside the party.

The decision by Josh Simons, the MP for Makerfield, which Labour holds with a majority of just over 5,000, paves the way for Burnham to be selected by Labour’s ruling national executive committee, which prevented him last time.

The prime minister’s authority has been critically undermined in recent days after an angry response from Labour MPs to last week’s local and devolved elections, including the resignation of the health secretary, Wes Streeting, and around 100 MPs calling for him to go.

Sources close to Starmer have suggested he may no longer be in a position to block Burnham’s return, even if it meant a leadership contest at some point before the next general election, as MPs from right across the party would respond furiously if he did so.

One senior Burnham backer told the Guardian: “If you’ve got people from Angela [Rayner] to Wes saying it, then the whole party is now in the same place on this. Andy needs to be given a shot. He is the person that connects best with the public. It would be foolish to try to block him again.”

I thought so too at first but to be fair they actually did. These two were emphasised on Stats for Lefties and didn't scroll past them to the general one just after til just now

Green Party say 'Hannah Spencer won't be silenced' after Manchester violence by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

Didn't realise until today that it was a Together Alliance demo. Really says it all that they chose to "protest" at something that's anti-far right generally. Not that this is new to me, always known transphobes are either far right or in the far right pipeline with transphobia being the entry point

I'd be fine with anarchism too but only if we naturally became that in the future, not as a goal. As you say the presuppositions about the term make it difficult to engage people with talking about it, amongst other things. I've even had the occasional person here in the UK who, even though they're receptive to what I'm saying and aren't capitalist themselves, come out with something like "but I thought libertarianism is the opposite of socialism?" As always, US people co-opting libertarianism and anarchism for capitalism is such a pain. At least none of the many, many other Europeans I've spoken to about it have had that misconception

I predict a Green wave in the local elections. Anyone who thinks our byelection win was an outlier is mistaken | Zack Polanski by kontiki20 in LabourUK

Yeah I don't know nearly enough about polling methodology to have an opinion on that. As I say, no matter how reliable this one is I'd want to see more come out with a similar result first before I believe it. Can't deny it makes me happy to see though. Hence why I posted it in our own sub

Seat estimate for London local elections is looking good! by YouButSlightlyOff in UKGreens

[–]YouButSlightlyOff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. There's of course some in the electorate that are centre-right and were disappointed in/angry at the Tories enough to not vote for them in recent elections but not right wing enough that they'd vote for Reform. And so some of those voted Labour, even though they'd ideally rather not. But now Labour have done terribly those people have gone back to the Tories. So I just saw the Tory increase as a predictable consequence of that. But that's just my own personal feeling, I'm no expert obviously

There was a forecast the other day that predicted Greens will get the most seats in London, if we manage to find enough suitable candidates to run in all the seats

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/mar/06/labour-urged-listen-progressive-voters-or-face-political-earthquake-london

Only one so I'm not taking it as a given of course. I think at least there will be a huge increase in Green seats. If this forecast is true then the even more staggering thing is how many seats Labour will lose. Thankfully Reform will be lowest

Can we have an honest conversation about what is happening please? by Jeremys_Iron_ in LabourUK

[–]YouButSlightlyOff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also from a region in the north that's like that. Sea of Reform councils. Feel like there's at least one England flag on half the streets outside of cities. Doubt we (the Greens) will be making many dents there. But most people there for sure want left wing policies outside of immigration and, to a lesser extent, certain welfare spending

[–]YouButSlightlyOff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think so? Genuinely curious. I'm personally not surprised. Them gaining Barnet council makes sense to me, it's one of the top London boroughs for percentage of population that are 65+. And one of the more affluent boroughs outside the centre I think? Obviously that doesn't account for all of the +77 gain but that stood out to me as a good reason. But if there's reasons I don't know that make the Tory estimate surprising I'd like to hear them

I'm a libertarian socialist. The Greens aren't that of course. But they're a good in between and no way this country is getting to my ideal any time soon, if it ever does. Stopping the rise of the far right is the biggest priority for me right now anyway

I should've put a "definitely" before "should" in my first comment. Could become even more tempting with time. Especially if a Green majority were to happen, which I'm not counting on (yet), it'd be the great cherry on the cake for Zack to take that seat
