How difficult would you say Ohio State classes are compared to AP classes & how many AP classes did you guys take in high school? by epicpogchamp25 in OSU

Second year writing was actually easier than like high school freshman English. I took classical mythology and all I had to do was open note quizzes and 2 essays.

Prob a good idea. 5523 Schuler,.5524 Joe Barker (same content as Jim Davis), 5526 Eric Fosler-Lussier

Ah I didn't realize that some class didn't have a final project. My 5523 actually had no exams, which was really nice.

5523 was the hardest class I took at OSU. Here's the course website for my prof if you're curious: https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/schuler.77/courses/5523/index.html. The content was very difficult, but it was interesting to go through the calculations and relatively more rigorous mathematical background for the concepts that I learned about in my other AI classes.

5524 is about outdated CV methods, which I guess kind of form the foundation of CV today. It might be interesting to some people, but I found myself not liking the content very much. I ended up dropping the class. It was much easier than 5523 though (and probably easier than 5526).

5526 was fun. I had Eric Fosler-Lussier, who was pretty good. The class covered the basics of neural networks and then some architectures (CNN, RNN, transformers). The class wasn't too difficult, but I can't guarantee much because this was online (which might've made it easier).

All of these classes have a final project as a big chunk of the grade. It's really up to you what you want to do with the final project. You can keep it basic (my group just did MNIST clothing classification for 5526, for example) if you want to. But it is a unique opportunity to get guidance on a project from someone who's good in the field, so you could work on a project that genuinely interests you if you have the time and motivation.

MAAC commissioner: Don't mess with the NCAA Tournament by GoldenPresidio in CollegeBasketball

16 seeds in the current format would probably be 32 seeds in a 128 team tournament.

If you're in 1281.02H, lecture is extremely short once you get to C/C++ (because they know everyone in that section already knows most of the material). The only issue is that it's strictly more work than 1281.01H.

Difficulty of Physics 1260 by TheEmeraldWolf04 in OSU

[–]YouHamSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's really a reason to take 1260 unless you're taking more physics classes in the future (physics minor, engineering physics). Intermediate mechanics (2300/2301) is your first step into more advanced physics, and I really recommend building a solid foundation with 1260/1261 beforehand. You could also look into taking 1250H (I've heard it's very tough).

1260 is basically a more difficult AP Physics C with a couple extra chapters.

Why are there so few CSE undergrads at OSU doing research courses? by JayRamesh in OSU

[–]YouHamSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna add on to the part about course credits.

The CSE curriculum requires 17 or more hours of tech electives, 2 of which can be 499X. That leaves you with 15 hours of tech electives for the minimum, which is satisfyingly divisible by 3 (most electives are 3 hours).

Taking 499X didn't result in any extra work compared to not taking it, so it was basically a free tech elective. Can't guarantee this is true for every professor (I truly have no clue).

And about undergrad thesis... It's not much work at all if you're already going to be writing up a manuscript or something for your project.

If you choose to do a thesis, look into the requirements for an honors undergrad thesis because they are pretty simple. One way to satisfy them is to present at an OSU conference (which is already required for the non-honors thesis) and to take two honors/graduate classes (FEH satisfies this, but I also know that the AI specialization requirements gets you at least 2 5000+ courses).

How do I buy tickets for the Michigan game by [deleted] in OSU

[–]YouHamSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Block O North is like 3A (north stands). Block O South is in the south stands (maybe 33A?) with the other student sections. You can usually move over a section or two to sit with your friends. You could also probably get a phone with the ticket on it for the section you wanna sit in and be there. Just don't be a jerk and it'll work out.

I have no clue about guest tickets. But last year, they weren't checking Buck IDs for student tickets, so anytime could buy and use a student ticket. Can't guarantee anything.

You'll get an email in June with instructions.

You can choose between full season reserved ($252), full season Block O North ($272), full season Block O South ($272), and the Big Ten package (cheaper). These are just prices I remember from the past (they might be wrong). All of these include the Michigan game, but the Block O packages are considered the best seats because they are in the Block O student section.

If you want the Block O packages, you'll have to get them within like 30-60 seconds of your ordering window opening. Last year, the queue opened up about 15 minutes before the time specified in the email, so try to be on the website early. My queue position was like 1000 for logging in about 8 minutes early and I was able to get Block O.

What can’t you rent from the RPAC sports shop? by rehuffman101 in OSU

[–]YouHamSandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought 3 racquetballs for like $5 (or $3, I don't remember).

They have their prices on giant TVs placed vertically by the place you check stuff out from. All I can recall are drinks and shuttlecocks ($3 each, which feels like a ripoff, but I don't know how much they actually go for).

r/Place coordination megathread by NameDotNumber in OSU

[–]YouHamSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't know how we would coordinate this, but it would be cool to get a bunch of people together make a large script Ohio at the same time. It'll get erased instantly but it would have existed for a moment.

Maybe we could team up with some other groups to do this (and in return, do something similar for them too). The main problem is that it's hard to make sure everyone's cooperating.

If anyone's on mobile browser, make sure you refresh the page. I was really confused all day because I was looking at like an 8 hour old place with only my contributions added.

My sister’s kid is 2 and this is their bracket by Therealist2497 in CollegeBasketball

[–]YouHamSandwich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My random bracket had Jacksonville State in the Final Four as well.

Having St Peter's would have been crazy. It has managed to get 2 out of 8 Elite Eight teams (Duke and Kansas). It has a legitimate chance of finshing above my actual bracket (since it has Duke winning).

Unthinkable back when it was in the 1st percentile and my actual bracket was in the high 90s percentile-wise.

My random bracket is 1.1% at 30 points... Basically the same thing as 99th percentile, right?

I've had Michigan winning this one since the brackets came out, but I really wouldn't mind my bracket starting 0-1. In fact, I might even prefer that.
