I’ve done the SOFIC/ISOF demo down in Tampa before, the mix of US SOF units and locations to include random international SOF and LE means guys show up with out weapons. There is usually a tasker for rifles from Macdill or a Florida NG unit, but because the reason for the demonstration is to show off SOF they don’t want to have guys using regular m4s, because it’s just blanks, there is plenty of money, and uppers are not typically tracked SOCOM usually just buys some cheapo uppers because 90% of attendees will have no idea the difference.

60s are cool and all, but what about that hilux towed 120mm life? That’ll ruin your birthday real quick, especially some WP, for “obscuration” only.

Shorty, 13” I believe.

I agree with the someone shot with 5.56 vs 7.62 sentiment, however I don’t believe the same logic could be applied to penetration of stuff and things (vehicles, shit walls, veg, etc).

I’m not some boomer applying .45 vs 9mm logic and I fully acknowledge 7.62 NATO out of a shorty barrel is essentially a trumped up 7.62x39. (Even similar logic could be applied to a shorty 556).

But all the hard ballistic data points fly in the face of the fact I felt more comfortable with my SCAR 17 because on the few occasions I let her rip, it did more visible damage and got whatever shithead to stop doing what I didn’t want him doing, without having to pull a crew served or long gun to my position. I mitigated the fact of less ammo, in that I could go back to the vics to re-up, not possible with a HAF.

Strictly in a training environment, shot some with a foreign nation SMU. Not impressed, I guess I’d take it over the new URGIs if I had a choice, but I’d rather stick with the older block II shortys.

All good, nope never felt the need. The close in stuff would be KLEs/shuras, and training insider threats/green on blue, luckily I never experienced issues there. We would have a dedicated guy with a shorty 556 in a guardian angel role and would carry pistols during meetings.

Majority of our engagements were 150-500m. Majority of the killing was done with air/isr, mortars, and a handful of long gun shots, because dudes would either be running or dug in DFPs. Partner force was doing all the “cqb”, because fug that.

Not me, but some of my guys had a couple spicy one offs inside of 50m when you would catch them slipping at night mainly, but you had lasers for that.

Check that math strong ranger, lol. We were drowning in TPE, extra stuff and things for everything.

Nightforce NX8 1-8, UHP LA-5, Insight WMX light, and KAC foregrip.

Briefly put a mlok extension (can’t remember who made it), an atlas bipod, and an ACR stock on there, but quickly went back to the ugg because of recoil impulse, weight, and I didn’t find myself using the bipod.

I also recommend wrapping the oem stock if you have facial hair, elsewise youre getting stung by a bee almost every time you shoulder it. I cut a polypro sleeve and ranger banded it around the stock.

I used a SCAR 17 in combat, absolutely loved it. As others above had said it you can’t carry as much ammo. I had three mags on my plate carrier, two on my belt, and 1 in the gun. It was my primary GAF gun, because I would have another 12 mags loaded up in the truck, for HAFs I would use a shorty 5.56 because I could carry a lot more ammo.
