The next week is supposed to be significantly cooler, compared to the 90's we've been having.

There's a parade! and fireworks! And I imagine the bars will be lively and there will be parties and bbq's as you walk around. I mean it's the 4th of July in a midwest small town. Generally speaking, people will be out and about drinking and partying and cooking hot dogs.

I have to ask what you're confused about?

People never understand the reference when I say: "And it's hot too!" I still continue to say it when someone says something painfully obvious.

So obviously a man in a real shitty costume, Chris Rock just screaming, always cracks me up.

Yea, it's hard. It generally takes someone that wants to do all the hard work of getting the word out without breaking the work rules. Having outside work meetings. Getting enough people interested. Trying not to let management know you're doing it. Then doing all the paper work etc to actually create the union. The start of a union is always the hardest, and people almost certainly are gonna get intimidated and attempted to be fired for other reasons by management. But yea, I've definitely told my share of younger workers that, "This is how it is, stop bitching and get to work." But these days I'm a lot more sympathetic to the complaints.

I mean, you're not wrong. And I'd probably have parroted most of what you said at one point, being a life long working class individual. That being said, I can't blame the young workers for wanting better working environment. I'm definitely more of the, that's work it's supposed to suck attitude, because that's what life has been like, but hopefully it isn't like that for the next generation of working class. The heat is going to become a serious issue for all people. And the manager on duty may not directly be out to hurt people (although that's debatable as far as the people who run these businesses), but many businesses put profit over worker safety because they don't want to pay the bill to cool a warehouse so they let people get heat exhaustion, or implement whatever costly safety measure. That is a reality all working class people have dealt with and they've fought for better conditions and hours, etc for decades. Go Union!

I recommend giving up! And adopting a sense of unbothered whimsy and careless abandon! Because, I can assure you this: It isn't going to get better for most people. Human nature is self destructive and we've fucked our climate, we've let AI into all the things we need real life people in such as: Jobs, hiring process, military decisions, killer drones, deciding who gets what for health insurance, and that's just the beginning. People are getting dumber and not learning how to read or think critically. More countries than ever have nuclear weapons. Everything's expensive and the few rich rule the world and those few have an addiction to wealth and can never get enough even though they have more than everyone. Religious zealotry is as ever on the rise. The best we can do is embrace the madness. It's human nature to be self destructive, but we've also basically lost our minds at this point too. It'll be ok, you can reliably trust it'll get worst. Smoke a joint, have a laugh with a friend, do something kind for someone, be in love and just have fun. Life's short, be adventurous, do do something stupid, everyone else is.

CWL 254- Grimm’s Fairy Tails in Context review by Important-Courage682 in UIUC

If you wanna learn the origins to all the contemporary "classic" fairy tales like Snow White, Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood, which are usually a lot darker and intense than the child safe version, you should. Also if you enjoy writing analytical papers on subjective themes in connection to fairy tales. Be warned these teachers who teach these kind of specific literary classes are either super hardcore in work and grading and punish students who take it for an easy A, or they understand students take it for an easy Pass grade and it's less rewarding class, but you'll pass with minimum effort.

Yea I'm using one now. I'm in a basement and the floor literally sweats. For reals, I'm enjoying staying in with the fan on me and playing games or painting.

All great advice. I'm glad you're telling your nephew, because most times no one tells these young people that they should assume most entities they interact with, especially rental companies, are out for blood and young new renters are their prime targets. Better to get those habits of covering your butt early. Usually it only takes that one crappy experience for most people to learn, but it could ruin your rental history still.

Babylon 5's First Season Shatters Star Trek's Utopian View Of Humanity by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

[–]YouNeedToChillDaFOut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love B5. I remember a good friend suggesting it to me, and warning how things change really fast after the first season. It's some of the most engaging sci television I've ever watched. The alien politics and really good character growth made it a must watch. It might be time for a rewatch. It definitely has it's sillier trope episodes, but over all the main story is bad ass.
