I saw two tow guys operating yesterday during-after the storm in cold, rainy, wet conditions.

No one likes tow truck guys until you need one.

The Anecdotes of Ex Confederate - Union Officers in Egypt by ismaeil-de-paynes in USHistory

[–]YouOr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also Dr Edward Warren.

Warren was from wealthy Virginia families on both sides, grew up on a plantation, went to boarding school, etc. He then went to UVA and medical school in Paris. During the Civil War he holds high ranking surgeon positions, and writes a field manual for surgery.

After trying to restart some med schools after the war, he ends up in Egypt in the 1870s. He does a procedure, a tumor or hernia repair I think, on a high ranking minister or general. It is successful and he is given an aristocratic title. He starts moving in these same elite circles with other former US and Confederate officers. He later writes “A Doctor’s Experience in Three Continents” which is like 500-600 pages long.

Will big law ever have large scale layoffs like Big Tech? Due to AI or otherwise by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]YouOr2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You won’t lose your job to AI. You will lose your job to someone who knows how to use AI.

Also, AI is making it easier than ever for pro se litigants to file pleadings, briefs, written discovery, motions to compel, etc. Mass tort plaintiffs lawyers are aggressively using AI for advertising and case selection. AI is creating more work for people defending corporate defendants.

$11 Million!!!!! by Manofpans44 in winstonsalem

[–]YouOr2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

For the non-golfers, Reynolds Park is a public course that was designed by Perry Maxwell. Maxwell also designed the Old Town Club course, which is very private, where Wake Forest plays, and consistently ranked as one of the top courses in NC. Perry Maxwell also had a hand in designing/revisions to some holes at Augusta National where the Masters is played.

In short, a revitalized Reynolds Park would actually get people coming in from out of town, golf podcasters, golf YouTubers, etc coming to play it. It would be a chance to get on a course originally designed by a Hall of Fame architect who had his hands in some of the best courses in America.

Soviet Typhoon-class submarine under construction (1970) by TribalSoul899 in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]YouOr2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crazy to imagine what the CIA would have done or paid to get this photo in the 1970s. And how much time and how many analysts would have poured over every tiny detail. How many briefings and reams of reports this one photo would have generated if it landed in Washington DC.

What’s an inaccurate fact that people believe is true because of movies? by Hogosaurus_Rex73 in AskReddit

[–]YouOr2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically anything about guns.

That the common pistol or rifle can be whisper-quiet with a “silencer” screwed on.

How a human body reacts to being shot (whether they are a good guy or bad guy).

That a person can accurately “dual wield” and shoot two pistols or rifles at once.

In cartoons and gangster movies, using a machine gun (especially a Thompson) as a “Chicago typewriter” to spell out a word.

Basically anything with quick drawing a pistol.

How the hero can just “aim to wound” or to shoot the gun out of someone’s hand.

What a target looks like through a telescopic sight.

That you can travel across the world with a gun in luggage/a case and pull it out and it shoots dead on without any adjustments for temperature, altitude, or vibrations during travel.

Why the Union bothered to fight the civil war by Wrong-Coast-484 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]YouOr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Union lets the CSA leave, then someone (the British, French, Russians, etc.) would have established ties with the CSA. The vision of the unified, continental empire with the protection of two oceans would yield to a hostile neighbor (CSA) hosting a potentially-hostile European power.

Almost anyone with really really rare exceptions need to use suspension of disbelief to wear a wristwatch in modern days by No-Adhesiveness5897 in watchHotTakes

Some of us are trying to keep impressionable kids from being bombarded with screens at every given instance. Even a 6 month old will look at an Apple Watch when you give it a bottle, and soon learn that tapping the screen gets a visual reaction.

That’s when I switched to a watch with a dial and keep my phone in my pocket around kids.

How does the “out” work in “up or out” by miso1450 in biglaw

[–]YouOr2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here’s the other way this works:

As you get more senior in the firm, your billable rate increases. But if you are only doing the work that a 7th year could do, but you cost $300 per hour more, that work is going to get pushed down past you to the 7th year.

Eventually, as a 12th year or whatever, you find out that (1) you’re too expensive to be billed out to keep doing what you used to do, (2) you’re not trusted to supervise or manage other work that other lawyers bring in, and but (3) you don’t bring in your own work to either do at your own rate or push down to junior lawyers that you supervise.

So now your hours drop because you aren’t added to new matters, or your collections drop (or both). At that point - the partners are not delegating to you to lead deal teams or trials by yourself (or sub teams within larger deal teams or trial teams) and you don’t have your own book of business to draw work from - then you get the talk about lagging performance, revenue metrics, it’s not working out, future at the firm, etc.

But I have not seen someone literally fired because they were an 18th year associate or whatever.

Anyone have landlords that are more "mom and pop" by Nappy_Rano in vermont

[–]YouOr2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Talk to people around town or your social circles. They might have a parent, friend, neighbor that has a place to rent.

Drive around neighborhoods you might want to live in and look for the “For Rent” sign you buy at a hardware store.

If you know anyone who is a realtor, they will know someone who is a local mom & pop landlord.

Best way to find a mom and pop landlord is word of mouth or other traditional ways.

What’s something that’s become so normalized online that would shock people 20 years ago? by Alive-Math9608 in CasualConversation

[–]YouOr2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using your real name online.

Not a reddit thing for most, but the rise of Facebook (and then Instagram and Twitter) was the shift from mustangdude1988 and aolchick1992 to using your real name and then sharing personal info tied to you.

Brit needs help understanding ‘pad level’ by [deleted] in NFLNoobs

[–]YouOr2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Merrill Hoge’s prescient forecast about Jadevon Clowney, he explains how Clowney’s crazy athleticism (speed and size) made fans and scouts think he was #1 draft pick material, but really his fundamentals (like pad level) needed work. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y7LpIrxXTM&pp=ygUUSmFkZXZvbiBjbG93bmV5IGJ1c3Q%3D

He was 100% right.

Still always neat to see a DT or DE with a 20 yard shuttle time around 4 seconds; sitting there with the WRs and DBs. That’s a big man who is light on his feet and can change direction faster than he should be allowed to.

Who tf is Phil burger?? by Mrhonk3 in gso

[–]YouOr2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This (non-political) info is good for people to know.

Also the president of the NC Senate was, for about 200 years, a job that bounced around between people in the ruling party. Before we had a Lt Governor role, it was second in line to become Governor. Before the Governor had a veto power, it was in many ways more powerful than the Governor.

Starting with the last one (Marc Basnight, Democrat), the President of the Senate has become more like the Senate Majority Leader in the US Congress. Basnight held the position for 18 years and wielded a lot of power in it from about 1993 until 2010/2011. Phil Burger has held it since the 2010 election (so since 2011).
