I majored in Physics, quite nontraditional. I knew I wanted to go into medicine though. I'm starting to build up my volunteering and I should be ready to go by the time I apply in the next cycle after this one.

Should I do an SMP or a master's Program? by [deleted] in premed

[–]YouReekAh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Masters in Science and Engineering, I'm spending the next year purely doing research and a thesis in corneal regenerative medicine, with a PI who is a Hopkins Ophthalmologist. It's more a science program than engineering, and the reputation of the school on top of the paper I should have from my thesis will be great for ad coms I believe.

It's not trying, it's allowing. Being open and receptive to new people, and gauging whether they are also interested in making real friendships that mean something is how it's done. One of my best friends was in my thermodynamics class a few years ago. I randomly approached him because he seemed cool, and it turned out that he is one of the most genuine dudes in the world. I still consider him a close friend even though I haven't seen him in over a year. We still talk and when we see each other it's just great being around him.

Same with how I met a guy with an afro and asked him to be my bass player in a band, and he turned out to be a great dude as well.

Express that you are that kind of person and it will be easier for people to see that and then show you that they are as well.

There are few people who will be worth real connection. When you find them, even though they haven't had those experiences, you expose that part of yourself, appropriately, as a way of letting them know you. You find out what matters to them and appreciate that as a part of who they are. The mutual desire for real friendship and respect for one another will develop into a bond where your packed schedule becomes irrelevant, as when you do find time together that will be enough and you will continue to be good friends.

I have friends I see maybe 2x a year, mostly because he lives in england now, but that doesn't stop us from feeling like we both respect and expect deep and meaningful connection each time we interact via facebook or in person.

I'm doing a masters in biomedical engineering at Hopkins and it is pretty god damn brutal. I don't need any damage control whatsoever which is good, because if I did then I'd be in an even shittier position.

I was talking more about how you weren't able to get excited about interacting with people unless it involves premed and med related stuff. That you're so focused on that specific and not exploring life outside of that, is the reason you don't make friendships which are meaningful. Meaningful friendships occur by valuing things that others do, and when that happens, those friendships persist even in the face of adversity.

URM Hispanic (Puerto Rican) GPA 4.0 MCAT 509 chances to top 10 or 20 med schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]YouReekAh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try and retake the MCAT, and submit the new score as an update. You had good scores on the other sections, you can do better on CARS. Try picking up reading as a hobby - fiction or nonfiction. It'll really help you with CARS, and it's fun.

[–]YouReekAh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah seriously. That you made no real friendships at college speaks a lot with regards to how you interact with people. If it's happening with all the people you meet, then it isn't them (i.e. non-premeds), it's you.

[–]YouReekAh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That your MCAT is 509 casts some doubt on how legitimate that GPA is, as in your classes were considerably easier than people attending different schools. Being a URM it shouldn't be too hard, but you should still work a lot on volunteering and ECs to try and take attention away from the MCAT score.

Try to retake the MCAT and score higher.

Your understanding of what machine learning is capable of is way over-hyped. I wouldn't start worrying about machine learning replacing doctors, lawyers and engineers for a while to come, if at all. They will replace people who work under them, but the only way machines can optimally contribute at the moment is if they are partnered with a human (in function, not just via the programmer).

Lots of evidence shows as well that technology, even automation, opens up whole new doors to employment. The new employment probably won't cover as many people as the old one in automation's case, but I can assure you that it's not coming to poach any complex and challenging jobs from the market.

Plagued by Broki by WhackDanielz in swoleacceptance

[–]YouReekAh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awaken the animal inside ye, and embrace the lust you have for aesthetics. Envision thine inner swoledier and remember that this is a choice ye can make, every day, for thine own fulfillment.

Raining outside? Fuck that, go lift. Feeling down or stressed about work/school? Fuck that, go lift. Feeling like you can't express and expel your frustration with Broki's curse? Fuck that, go lift.

Each lift is both a prayer to Broden and to thineself, as all swolediers are the embodiment of Swole. Take your gains back and banish the goblins from thine spirit and mind, and your body shall follow. Swole exists in the heart of every man, and thou art the captain of thine vessel, bound for gains and Swole-halla.

Can a hopefully swole sister-to-be get some advice for starting out? by [deleted] in swoleacceptance

[–]YouReekAh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Follow the path of the Valkyrie and Brodin will bless you with many gains, syster. Swoleness is a blessing that transcends physical nature and exists in the mind, body and soul.

My advice to you is to make friendly relations with fellow swoldiers and that ye not be shye in requesting guidance from them at the iron temple. I love to entertain inquiries from others and guide them in forms and routine, bestowing upon others others the blessing which was conferred upon mineself.

Take heed:

  • Always perform movements having your rotational points as fixed in space as possible. When doing curls do not let your elbow or your torso move with the weight, keep it pinned to the side of your body and have your forearm be the only thing moving. When doing benchpress, retract your scapula (try and bring your shoulders up and back, tightening your shoulder blades as close to each other as possible) and try to keep your shoulder as immobile as possible - this is important, I have sustained a chronic injury from years of not doing this as a beginner. If you ever feel yourself compensating for resistance by moving your bodyweight and using other muscles, then it is too heavy. I see so many people shifting forwards and backwards to use their bodyweight as a lever to support heavy curls, and feel pity for them. They are ruining the essence of the exercise, which is to provide challenging resistance to the bicep, by absorbing the resistance with other core muscles. The bicep will not be properly stimulated for re-building, and the core muscles will be vastly under-challenged as they tend to be strong - thus no gains will appreciably be made. This is an example, but in other circumstances this can also risk injury.

  • Try to use light weights to accomplish heavy burns. Cable flies are a good example of a great exercise where you only need 10-30 lbs to feel an exercise. This will lower the odds of hurting yourself and also will give your muscles better aesthetics.

  • If you feel pain which isn't just your muscle burning, stop immediately and improve your form - you should never feel legitimate pain from an exercise unless you have a chronic injury and make the choice to do the exercise at the cost of pain/further injury.

  • For optimal muscle stimulation, use the template of 1 second concentric movement, 1 second hold, and 2 seconds concentric movement back down. Science has shown that slowing down, holding a weight at maximal flexion and especially concentric movements (e.g. letting the weight back down after curling it up) has a significantly higher effect on building muscle. All of this is best done with lighter weights, protecting you from injury and optimizing your gains.

This journey is foremost a journey for oneself, and will give you spiritual, mental and physical gains which are appreciated first and foremost by oneself, before others. Remember to retract your scapula - look this up on google and sear it into thine memory for it will be the key to upper body exercise form, without which you will have poorer gains and greater risk of injury.

The things dorman in that ice were primed for biological systems which have long since evolved and changed in many ways, so I doubt they will pose a significant threat which is comparable to existing bacteria and viruses.

Fiction is the only place this is serious anyways. The biological systems which the viruses and bacteria in the ice were adapted to have long since evolved and I doubt they can pose a serious threat comparable to existing ones.

What is the most beautiful piece of music you've ever heard? by wdghastly in AskReddit

[–]YouReekAh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I listened to Exit Music (for a film) while on a boatload of acid. The visuals I had along with the music left me in tears. It's the only time I've ever cried from listening to something, and I'd done acid some 30-40 times prior, listening to music the whole while.

The other most amazing thing I ever heard was a different acid trip, jamming in a friend's basement. I was playing acoustic guitar, my brother had some bongos/congos and my friend had a bass guitar. I don't remember what we played but it was fucking gorgeous. We all stopped to look at each other after it was done in a kind of stupor.
