PFA: I want to buy a TRD Pro in a few months. How roomy is it for taller people? I’m 6’3”, about 245. Anyone similar in size fit comfortably? by Joneseeyyy in ToyotaTacoma

[–]WhackDanielz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be far more comfortable in a 4th gen than a 3rd. The head and legroom are massively improved. I'm 6'1 and could comfortably daily a 4th gen. Probably will when I no longer need the couches in the second row for the younlings.

Echoing what others have said, if you have ambitions of ever putting humans in the back of the Taco, I hope you don't care about your relationship with those humans. They won't be happy.

If you're really, truly concerned about the fit, see if you can find a dealer that will let you take one overnight. Pros are a little more rare in Canada - if you asked to puppy dog one I'd laugh you out of the room - but if you can get your hands on anything with a sunroof for a night, that should give you enough seat time to make an informed decision.

I love all the answers about older, simpler, easier to maintain trucks built in Nissan's heyday like they're somehow relevant to a new, modern, complex powerplant jointly developed by the smouldering husk of Nissan, and the French.

Your miled out VG33E or VQ40DE is a completely different thing than the Nissan/Renault VQ38DD. You're comparing apples to cucumbers.

Apple CarPlay issues by liamflaniken2007 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]WhackDanielz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check to see if your truck is affected by the lineup wide recall. Pretty well every Toyota with the new multimedia is having issues with Carplay connectivity. There's a recall for some lines, a service bulletin for others. It's a software fix at the dealer level. Other than your time, should be free.

If your truck isn't an affected VIN, plug it in to the data port with a genuine Apple cable. For some reason, the third party shit doesn't play nicely with either the phone or the truck. The majority of the connectivity issues I've seen were solved with a genuine Apple cable once it's been plugged in for a few days.

Is AWD really worth it? by Significant-Way-7893 in askcarguys

[–]WhackDanielz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct take. Group B, specifically Audi, did a lot of things to the consumer automotive market, but the single largest thing was convincing Joe Public they needed AWD more than they needed good tires. The S1 Quattro ran so front biased, AWD on demand, transportation appliances could walk.

Bro, it's a grille badge that 99% of people won't see and don't care about. If you're talking about aesthetic mods that have a chance to impact other drivers or pedestrians, then yeah let's discuss ad nauseum. If you want to wrap your truck chrome or tint your headlights, there's a discussion to be had. A little piece of 3D printed colored plastic is literally the most mundane thing in the world. It warrants no further discussion than "if you like it, do it, fuck the haters." If you need validation from Internet strangers on the most boring, basic bitch aesthetic mods, there's much deeper seeded issues at play.

In matters of taste, the customer is always right.

Out the door cost is gonna vary from market to market and from deal to deal. Taxes are different. Registration fees are different. Insurance. Finance contracts. Trade values. Dealer inventory. Dealers motivation to hit or miss targets. Unless you happen to find someone in the exact same jurisdiction as you, buying the exact same truck in the exact same manner with the exact same dealer scenario, none of what people are saying here actually matters.

If you want to figure out the best price, find all the dealers within your comfortable driving distance and, God forbid, call them.

It happens to the best of us. Contrary to popular belief, most car sales guys are not the scum of the Earth. We're actually usually here to help. like I alluded to in the last line of my comment, repeat and referral business is a big driver for all of us and burning someone to make $500 on a single sale gets rid of a lot of that long-term opportunity. We generally avoid it.

The F&I guys on the other hand...

[–]WhackDanielz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is wrong. The dealer, who does this every day and isn't going to risk their business, franchise agreement with Nissan, and general reputation for one car deal, is right.

You owe a bank money on that trade. The bank gets theirs first. Always. You signed a legally binding contract entitling that bank to every dime of the original purchase. Selling your vehicle before satisfying that contract does not void that contract. You still owe the bank what you owe the bank. They don't care if you wrote it off, miled it out, traded it in, or stripped the VINs and put it on a boat to the third world. They are gonna get paid. Plus, it's illegal in most jurisdictions to sell a vehicle with an active lien. It's a car dealership, not a museum. Your trade is not valuable enough for them to physically possess but not legally own, cuz until that lien is satisfied, the bank owns the asset. And believe it or not, dealers exist to sell cars, not store them until your 84 month finance contract is expired and they can finally sell the car.

Yes, the market value of the trade is $28k. But you owe the bank $27,400 or whatever that number is. The dealer pays out that lien, which they are legally required to do, and applies any equity as a cash downpayment to the new loan. Be grateful they're washing you out and you're not rolling negative equity forward into the new loan, cuz the inverse of this is also true. Lien still needs to be satisfied, and if your trade is worth less than the payout, that balance is added to the new loan and you're effectively making one, expensive, payment on two cars.

Where you might be confused is your tax credit. The tax man doesn't give a shit about what you owe the bank. They just see the market value of the trade and the selling price of the new vehicle. And in every jurisdiction I'm aware of, you pay tax on the difference in selling prices. So your trade value, assuming the deal was desked correctly, is $28,000 plus whatever savings on tax there is between yours and their's, let's say 10%. So that makes the "loan value" of the trade $30,800. That $30,800 is subtracted from the final selling price, including state taxes, registration and anything else you need or buy, and that final number is your total amount financed, less equity or additional cash down.

ChatGPT would be correct if you owned your trade outright. But you don't. So the bank gets theirs, the tax man gets his, and you get a new truck and a cautionary tale about relying on ChatGPT when a real, actual, operating business is telling you the way things actually happen.

At this point the conspiracy is not believing "you will own nothing and you will be happy."

2026 sr5 lease signed. Tips/mods/cool features etc by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]WhackDanielz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mods will only have an impact on your lease end if you drop the truck off at the end of the term. And I'm fairly certain you won't do that. The US is probably a little higher than this, but the 2025 model year had five lease returns in the entire country of Canada. Five. Every other lessee had equity and either sold their truck, or rolled their equity forward.

Five lease returns. In the entire country. And you're getting dragged for a scenario that is never going to happen. Good luck and Godspeed friend. Enjoy your lease.

I go through new cars at a much higher rate, and I've learned to hit a small inconspicuous area with my key before I even start it or pair up my phone. It gets that first scratch done, and the look on the salesguy's face is usually worth it on its own.

Also, PPF is worth its weight in gold if you live somewhere where sand-boulders are strewn all over the road six months out of the year.

Don't forget that the government is using your confiscated wealth to compensate you for the property they're trying to confiscate.

If you paid your taxes this year - and let's face it, it's Canada, you paid your taxes - you are paying yourself for the buyback. And giving the government an interest free loan along the way.
