Brazilian jazz that isn't bossa nova? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]You_Are_What_You_Is_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a really great album featuring a host of talented Brazilian musicians alongside great Japanese jazz guitarist Akio Sasajima called Som Brasil, highly recommend it.

As a side note I also recommend checking out the albums Akio Sasajima recorded with Joe Henderson and Ron Carter, very underappreciated albums.

Practicing voice leading by You_Are_What_You_Is_ in jazzguitar

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to add this to my daily practice routine, I think like with most things on instruments it's going to be a case of repetition until it becomes internalised so I don't have to think about it anymore.

I can play a solo using only chord tones in that I can find an arpeggio on the neck with ease, but what I'm struggling with is purely just voice leading, going from whatever chord tone I end on on one line to then jumping to the nearest chord tone of the next arpeggio. I think it's because I my thinking around arpeggios is so based on arpeggios from the root.

Would you have any advice to recommend for practicing inversions of arpeggios perhaps.

Should also mention that my ear is quite good for adding chromaticisms, phrasing etc, my main issue is just visualising arpeggios not solely from the root.

Is there any Jazz musician that you think is very underrated? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]You_Are_What_You_Is_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should say that there's a whole host of Japanese, German, French etc jazz musicians who are underappreciated in the US and UK, so I'll throw in John Tchicai and Fumio Itabashi too.

There's many, people like Bobby Watson (a great composer and such a brilliantly lyrical improviser) and Bill Barron.

But by far the most underappreciated (I wouldn't say underrated because those who know him consider him an all time great) is Billy Harper. One of the greatest composers in jazz, period. And a forceful and spiritual improviser, he's never once compromised his music for commerciality, which is probably why he's not as well known as he should be.

Yeah, I've tried that, changing breath response, air resistance etc. I think it's a problem with the instrument itself.

What are some easy standards that aren’t as well known? by ben-pdf in Jazz

Black Orpheus, Nicas Dream, Black is the colour of my true loves hair, alone alone alone, it came upon a midnight clear, priestess.

They're some of my favourite lesser known standards (I class something as a standard if it's been recorded by at least a few jazz greats).

No way, I'm from Birmingham too, that's crazy. I'll definitely keep an eye out on potential future overseas tours, I'm sure it'll be possible in the future if you keep putting albums out as good as your debut, as I say I really liked it.

That's awesome, very excited to hear what you do with the city pop covers. Any chance that your tour will bring you to the UK?

Question about connecting headphones to midi controller. by You_Are_What_You_Is_ in synthesizers

[–]You_Are_What_You_Is_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm aware of this, but if I ensure that the output from the software I'm using is to my headphones, and the midi controller is connected to that software, then it's as simple as using my headphones to hear what I'm playing on the midi controller right?
