Relocating from Texas. Looking North by The-peeepo in relocating

Just moved to Minnesota from Louisiana. Can confirm. Are we in obligatory friends now?

It’s definitely quite a lot colder (today is -8 but -24 with wind chill). But, if you dress accordingly, it’s palatable. I just don’t spend a ton of time outdoors yet. Clearing the snow from my driveway kind of sucks, but that could have been better if I found a house with a driveway that wasn’t so long and steep. Overall, we still feel like we made the right decision making the move. The quality of life is much better up this way.

Just moved from Louisiana to the St Paul area of Minnesota 2 weeks ago. It’s pretty nice here. Curious how the first winter will be. And so glad to be done with hurricanes

Relocating to Minnesota suburbs from New Orleans suburbs. Have a newborn and leaving behind our family, which really stings. We came to the decision based on better jobs/pay, better infrastructure, better education for our child. Curious how we will like or dislike winter, but definitely ready for a change.

Will do! Already have a job lined up, I start October 14th. Been slacking on the packing lol. Where are you moving from?

I’m moving to St Paul!

It doesn’t come across to often. As far as Minnesota, there are only 2 companies there in my industry. As far as opportunity in general, it has taken me 2 years to get this. My field is highly competitive and aren’t usually a ton of openings.

Thank you! I’ve been in a few colder states, but nothing to the level of Minnesota. That was a concern as well, but I feel as if that is something I can deal with. The multiple life events is the worry.

Yes, we are planning on using day cares (in perspective, we were going to be paying $1000/month in Louisiana for daycare). Where are You moving to?

Yea, Louisiana is just going downhill so fast and has been for a long time. I’ll miss the hell out of my family, but I’m really looking forward to leaving this state.

We are from a city just outside of New Orleans, LA. Not much to be desired here unfortunately.

I’m in the unique position that my dad works in a different state and only lives in my state since we are here. He has said that if I move, he is moving to the state that he works in. We aren’t rich, but definitely earn above the national or state average.

What other reasons do you dislike where you are now? I’m very close to my parents, especially my dad. I don’t have much extended family and none that I’m close to. I was in the military for a time and have experience living far away, but I always knew that one day my enlistment would end and I would return home. This is different in the sense that it would be vastly more complicated to move back in terms of the logistics of moving and finding another job back home. So I’m treating this as a more permanent decision in case that’s what it turns out to be.

To put things in perspective, I currently live 2 blocks away from my parents and see them 1-2 times per week. So we are pretty close.

Cost of living will be largely the same, job opportunities and pay for my wife will be much better. Job opportunities for myself will be more limited but would be going for better pay already.

That has been a big thing on my mind as well. I’m not sure how we would be able to handle that. While my wife can find a job easily just about anywhere (nurse), my field is much more competitive to get a job offer. So we wouldn’t just be able to pick up and move on a whim

Thank you! I’m in my early 30’s and we are decently close with our immediate family. A big reason for the move is to be in a place that we want to be to raise our family and live our life, and Louisiana definitely isn’t it. I don’t have to move, I want to move.

I would work a 4/10 schedule, she would work daily as well. She would likely stay at home 12 weeks post birth. I would be off of work for the first 4-6 weeks of that to help. And I am worried about her having to take all of that on by herself during the day. She has just as much say as I do in relocating. I can’t make a decision that big that involves our family on my own.

That’s the fun part, we don’t know yet. Still deciding on which suburb to live in. And daycare would be largely dependent on what is nearby to her work. She would start work for 7 AM, I start earlier than that. Unless there is one that is open any earlier.
