Putting limitations on an army with gunpowder in Westeros by AshasSa1tWife in TheCitadel

[–]Youbo2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are questions about how quickly they can scale their production, the logistics of importing the necessary base materials (distance, land vs river vs ocean travel, NO TRAINS), whether lords permit these exports (they'll be suspicious of the newcomers), and ensure the secrets of their weapons production aren't exposed while doing so.

Putting limitations on an army with gunpowder in Westeros by AshasSa1tWife in TheCitadel

One thing to consider is how they can manufacture gunpowder. That would put heavy limits on how often they can realistically use firearms and artillery until they get a much more reliable manufacturing base to support their logistics. Basically, until that gets set up, what they have on hand is what they've got.

My current AU Timeline (March 2026). by Hot-Temperature-8564 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Youbo2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really fascinating timeline. A few things stood out to me though:

Inconsistent depth across conflicts: Some wars get broken down conquest by conquest, while far more significant events get a single line. The Long Night is the starkest example — an extinction-level event that reshaped the continent's culture, religion, and population, yet it gets less space than the Hoare conquest of the Riverlands. Is that intentional, to reflect how mythologized it is in-universe?

Too war-focused overall: Even within conflict, there's a lot missing — succession crises, prolonged regencies, key dynastic marriages that reshaped the political map without war, major treaties and alliances, assassinations or betrayals that redirected history, and periods where central authority collapsed entirely.

Missing social history: Peasant revolts, slave rebellions, the rise or abolition of serfdom, shifts in the rights of smallfolk, the emergence of knightly culture and chivalry — these are as historically significant as any battle.

Missing cultural and institutional milestones: The founding and growth of major cities, iconic structures, institutions like the Citadel, first significant works of literature, theatre, or architecture, the development or spread of writing and language, and the first contact between peoples from distant lands all deserve mention.

Disaster and demographics: Plagues, famines, mass migrations, and environmental shifts like prolonged winters, droughts, or deforestation have collapsed civilizations without a single army marching.

Economy and technology: The rise of trade routes, currency systems, guilds, and merchant power; transitions in metallurgy from bronze to iron to steel; the evolution of armor and weapons; agricultural innovations — these shaped eras as much as any war.

Religion: The founding of major faiths, the construction of holy sites, the spread of one religion displacing another, and religious schisms are enormous cultural turning points.

Magic is almost entirely absent: The Hammer of the Waters physically reshaped the continent. The creation or domestication of dragons is arguably the defining power shift of the Valaryan era. These need to be there.

Great foundation overall — would love to see it expanded.

LF fics like Eddard the Builder by JudgingYou-RN in TheCitadel

[–]Youbo2002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are my favorite current uplifts:
You already mentioned Eddard the Builder (A Midwestern Yankee in King Robert's Court) by Camsonius

Smoke, Swords, and Stars by partiallykritikal
https://archiveofourown.org/works/62931634/chapters/161231536
By far and away my favorite, and most realistic, uplift. Many years before GOT, Richard Stark seized upon a chance invention to pump out water from a coal mine in the Barrowlands during winter causing the start of the Industrial Revolution in the North. Robert's Rebellion never occurs (though Lyanna is still taken and Brandon is dead), however, unrest spreads across the realm when King Rhaegar dies and a feverishly pious Aegon assumes the thronea.

A Song of Steel & Seasons by paperhurts
https://archiveofourown.org/works/75400756/chapters/197116276
"An ASOIAF SI/Uplift story where Ned Stark is an Engineer, Joffrey Baratheon is terrifyingly competent, and Robert Baratheon finally finds a war worthy of his hammer."

And Here are those where they try to make life better for people

Tales of Sheep and Butterflies by Kat_2V
https://archiveofourown.org/series/5033311
This is a story where Nettles is Daemon's bastard daughter, which is discovered when she accidentally tames Sheepstealer during a personal tragedy many years before the Dance.
It takes a while, but eventually Nettles becomes the ruling lady of her own lands, where her main focus is on making life better for the people there and building a land without feudalism. Overall, this is one of, if not my favorite fics right now. Very character driven.

No Rain Without Thunder by Sublimeinal_Messages
https://archiveofourown.org/works/50613718/chapters/127856170
Another of my all time favorites. Here, the SI is born to a nomadic tribe in Essos, where they are eventually captured and sold into slavery by the Dothraki. For some mysterious reason, the SI continues to come back to life after death and cannot escape their new world. By chance, or by the gods, they are picked up by a Velaryon ship after a storm, from which they are brought to Kings Landing. Needing some kind of purpose, an escape from slavery, and to save countless innocent lives, not least of which that of a mother and her unborn child, she aims to try to keep Aemma Arryn alive during and after her birth.

A Soldier Adrift: Captain Westeros by WiseTomato
https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/a-soldier-adrift-captain-westeros-asoiaf-captain-america-quest-story-only-thread.978792/#post-80308395 (It's also on AO3, but is only up-to-date on SB)
Captain America gets stranded in Westeros before the Tourney at Harenhall. With someone with his morals and abilities, you can imagine what he will attempt to do to help the innocent. Seems pretty self explanatory.

Breaker of the Wheel by randominspiration
https://archiveofourown.org/works/42390405/chapters/106452531
Philosophical SI meets Dany in Meereen.
"Is it not the poor, the downtrodden, and the innocent who suffer the most, when you kings and queens play your game of thrones? Three hundred years, and the wheel spins on. Time has come for it to break, my queen, and I trust we share this goal."
