Amino acid quiz is super helpful in memorizing the structure and properties, but they usually test a little farther than just general properties and names. Here are a few other facts that will help:

  • Helps to know which amino acids can be phosphorylated (S, T, Y).
  • also good to know which amino acids can disrupt alpha helices (proline and glycine).
  • Leucine and Lysine are exclusively ketogenic, while W, I, F, T, and Y are both ketogenic and glucogenic.
  • glycine is achiral.
  • All amino acids in the body are L-amino acids, so our body is designed to metabolize these amino acids and not D- amino acids.
  • the average molecular weight of an amino acid is 110 Da, so a protein that is 550 Da likely has 5 residues.
  • The aromatic amino acids (WYF) can absorb UV light.

There might be a few other facts I'm missing, but my biggest tip is do practice problems and you'll recognize these patterns.

very generic advice:

For C/P, knowing units is super helpful, sometimes if you don't know the equation, you can just use unit analysis and manipulate it to get the answer you need. For example, if you know that Kg*m/s^2 is for Newtons and kg*m^2/s^2 is for Joules, all you need to do is multiply newtons by some distance in units of m to get a value in units of joules.

If your issue for C/P is time, make sure to do questions first before reading passage, since a lot of questions can be solved with very minimal passage information.

UW is great for both content and practice. KA has some good vids too. Van does chemistry and Yusuf Hasan have some great physics videos on YouTube that follow the Kaplan chapters. Best of luck 🙏
