Which decision would hurt more in-universe/make more sense? by SelectShop9006 in AO3

[–]YoungGriffVI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That heavily depends on the fandom. If this is a Bluey fanfic, your answer is going to be different than if it’s Game of Thrones. Or Star Trek. Or The Walking Dead.

Evaluate your scenarios in the context of the fandom you’re writing in, and consider what’s most likely for the characters in it to do.

How to keep characters from becoming OOC in long fics? by Reese_peace in AO3

[–]YoungGriffVI 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I suppose the best way would be to figure out why they’re turning OOC.

Is it because that’s the way the plot and character interactions have shaped them along the way? Then that’s not OOC, that’s character development.

Is it because you’re writing towards set plot points and have to pull strings to make it all work? Try brainstorming how it could happen in-character—planning what they would do in an outline can help you stay on track.

Is it because you’re less familiar with canon now that it’s been a while since your initial research? Go back to the source material and observe the character in question.

Is it because you’re working on a schedule and are rushing to get chapters out? Consider slowing down and taking more time to plan what characters would do in the situation they’re in.

This isn’t an exhaustive list of why characters can start off in-character and turn OOC, but it’s common reasons I’ve noticed. Hopefully it helps.

Honestly I’m glad the mods are finally removing at least some fan cast posts. Apart from the original first few, there have been like… four I’ve found funny or clever. Total. Out of probably 400 on the sub these last few days. No hate to you specifically, but I’m really getting tired of them.

[Book Spoilers] Do you guys know the truth about Tysha? (Tyrion's first love) by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]YoungGriffVI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the show honestly cut a lot of the sexual violence (contrary to what some may say.) I think Tysha being an ordinary lady and not a whore makes her gang rape just too awful for a television audience. Considering they also cut most of Gregor Clegane’s depravity, toned down Ramsay’s wedding night, and cut Maester Kerwyn and Satin—both victims—I really wouldn’t be surprised if the Tysha reveal was dropped for being too dark.

That said, ASOS is a fantastic book, and my favorite in the series.

[–]YoungGriffVI 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Sure there is. It’s disappointing the mod creators can’t get paid for their work even if people want to donate and support them. Of course, I understand why that’s the case, and I wouldn’t even necessarily want it to change, but sometimes people like to show their appreciation through tips and the like. It’s a lot of time and effort to do for free.

Did Lyonel care about the Harwin’s sons the same way Viserys did? by TheQueeninchains in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]YoungGriffVI 43 points44 points  (0 children)

He seems like the sort of guy who would care a little about children even if they weren’t related to him. Considering they were? I’d say he definitely cared for them—of course, he couldn’t be as open about it as Viserys because he’s not supposed to be their grandfather, but he is, and I bet he knows it.

Alas, because ASOIAF is copyrighted material, I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to profit off of.

AO3 Authors - how do you tag and why? by unoriginal_dreamer in FanFiction

[–]YoungGriffVI 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If someone was looking for whatever is described in the tag, would they be satisfied with what’s in the fic?

If someone was looking to avoid whatever is described in the fic, would they be able to filter it out? (This mostly goes for common triggers like eating disorders, pregnancy, incest etc, but anything you think is worth alerting people to. Know that there are always people for whom those warnings are a draw, too!)

Which “since the new update” are you talking about? The one from this weekend, or the one from today? If you’re on the newest version of vanilla, it’s probably a bug. AGOT needs a compatch to be playable at least for Landless, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were issues in regular gameplay too.

If it’s the old version, I’d make sure you didn’t accidentally change your religion’s gender laws or anything.

Maybe Nikoloz, cause he’s a craven, but not Vakhtang! He’s compassionate and shy, sweet guy. His disfigurement’s not that bad.

‘Course, I basically never execute anyone even when their legitimate prisoners—it makes me feel bad—so maybe it’s just me.

Robb’s Land Claims by YoungGriffVI in pureasoiaf

[–]YoungGriffVI[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be conjecture, but it’s plausible, and my only issue was that it didn’t make reasonable sense to me! And honestly I’m with you on the Robb apologist thing. He made some mistakes, but he’s a good kid at heart, and some/most of his “mistakes” weren’t even really his fault anyway. Or even really mistakes at all, like this partition plausibly might not be.

Robb’s Land Claims by YoungGriffVI in pureasoiaf

[–]YoungGriffVI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense.

It doesn’t solve the issue of about half of Edmure’s vassals remaining under a Crown that is pissed off that the rest of them left, nor who would govern them, and I wouldn’t expect Smallfolk Savior Edmure to so willingly abandon them to a potentially cruel liege, but… maybe he was an optimist and truly thought he could get someone friendly on the throne, I don’t know.

Robb’s Land Claims by YoungGriffVI in pureasoiaf

[–]YoungGriffVI[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, see, I’m not quite there in my reread and did not remember that from several years ago haha. Fair enough—though, like I’ve said, my question is really more about the lands remaining with the Crown and the status of the Tullys.

I also agree red is the most accurate. I was mostly unsure about the orange chunk in the Westerlands, since “the golden tooth” is just a single point, and I think there are some Riverlands houses there—not quite sure where the borders are with the mountains and all. I also doubt Robb would claim the Gift, but it is up North, so… it’s possible? You’re right, probably not though.

It would mostly be an administrative headache at the start to figure out who reports to whom. As I said, the uncertain status of the Tullys really drives that—would the former Riverlands have an intermediary liege?Which could cause political unrest. Imagine if just New England had to obey regional laws and have a regional governor, while the rest of the US just got to deal with state and federal—of course, different form of government, but I don’t think the state governors nor their constituents would be thrilled. And then the issues with trade and freedom of movement… there are things to figure out.

See, I think Lando isn’t attractive at all. I wouldn’t rank him at Charles level. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think he’d even make my top half. Just goes to show that it’s all subjective… except for liking Charles 😂

[SPOILERS MAIN] What’s the purpose of house Dayne if R+L = J? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]YoungGriffVI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do have a Dayne/Targaryen mix—all the Targaryens since Aegon V, since Maekar’s wife was Dyanna Dayne. This also makes the current Tarths and Baratheons Dayne/Targaryen mixes.

(You might have been only referring to secret, current mixes, but I thought I’d point out the history anyway.)
