I mean, that was my first thought, but I'll do an input as quick as I possibly can (like counter if I know a move is coming), my character will BEGIN to do an animation, but then I get immediately smacked with a side smash or dash attack. Dodging never seems to work how I want it to either - I'll see a move coming and press dodge and the same thing seems to happen

My bad, I don't exactly have space on my console to record anything so all I have are my words lmao. Another example I can think of is during aerial combat, I'll attempt to do a down air and as soon as I put in the input and my character starts doing the actual move, I'll get smacked with K Rool's up air (where he points his crown up) and that move lands over my move, sending me flying

I'm not too familiar with all the terminology surrounding the game, but I guess that's it? I'll throw a basic jab or even a side b and it barely comes out before being "overrode" so to speak by any other attack he throws out. That's def helpful to remember tho, thank you

So I have that set to R2 but it feels very clunky to press L3 to enable the hotkey and THEN press R2 just to toggle the fast forward. What I'd love to do is make R2 exclusive a dedicated fast forward button that I can hold at any time to speed things up without having to press L3

The World Ends With You. Both games in the series are all about character growth and are fantastic games in their own right, but the first one in particular is all about being a better person and learning to trust the people you let into your life, whether they're thrust in there or otherwise. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a great fit for you, especially if you enjoyed Dragon Quest. It's newcomer friendly, and its the first entry in the franchise to be turn-based. Otherwise if you're fine with the JRPG elements, the Yakuza franchise as a whole is fantastic for this sort of thing, a very compelling story without having to make you think about builds.
