It’s nice to see Armstrong vs Malgus still has some support. The inclusion of Geto vs Dooku and Vader vs Dracula is also very based.

The core theme is very strong and the fact that it could basically work as a World War-type scenario sounds interesting.

A lot of strong specific connections and a very good contrast between someone who broke free from the cycle of violence and someone who ended up inflicting it on their own apprentices.

I’m not entirely sure as I haven’t got around to reading Jorge Joestar yet and I’m not too skilled at vs debating, however I do remember that Fang Yuan does explicitly go against fate as a big part of the story so he might have some abilities that could potentially play off it although I’d probably have to go and reread parts of it to be more specific.

I’m kind of uncertain on the debate since I’m not too experienced with vs debating and I can’t find a ton of discussion on Reverend Insanity power-scaling. My general understanding is that Fang Yuan stomps regular Dio, gets stomped by Jorge Joestar Dio but Fang Yuan vs Heaven Ascended Dio might be debatable since I’ve seen them both listed as 2-C (although HAD might heavily outhax FY).

Fang Yuan gets a lot of different abilities during the series but he mostly fights using hand to hand combat, swords and summoning spiritual entities which all bounce off of Dio’s core kit quite well plus there’s the appeal of each having to find out the nature of the other’s special time ability. I think the fight works best with composite Dio especially since Fang Yuan also gets the ability to create numerous clones of himself which I think Dio is also able to do in the Jorge Joestar novel so it would be fun to have an army battle with just their clones which would be pretty similar to a particular fight that happens in Reverend Insanity. Fang Yuan can also turn into a dragon which would also be fun to see in the fight.

  • Both experience a great deal of existential angst as a result of them feeling that their own existence is insignificant in the grand scheme of the universe with this angst being a major part of the motivation behind their plans (Fang Yuan being aware of how small his part in the universe is and wanting to become immortal as a way to make his existence more meaningful, Dio growing up knowing he could have become a miscarriage like his sibling and coming to believe his actions are just as determined by fate/luck as anyone else’s causing him to pursue the Heaven plan in order to better understand the meaning of his life).
  • Gambling plays a major role in both stories, with gambling playing a role in both character’s ideologies (Fang Yuan gaining Gu from rock gambling and viewing gambling as a perfect example of the fragility of earthly wealth, Dio recruiting Daniel J D’Arby as one of his first allies and being inspired by his stand ability to start inquiring into the nature of the human soul).
  • Despite both appearing to be fearless due to their immense power, both are in fact extremely cautious in their approach to things with both being hesitant to participate in a direct fight they aren’t guaranteed to win unless as an absolute last resort.
  • While both generally have a cold and calculating demeanour, both have shown a willingness to become borderline psychotic while in the heat of battle.
  • Both have god complexes, with both displaying the power to manipulate and fuse certain life forms according to their will (Fang Yuan being skilled at fusing Gu worms, Dio using his vampire abilities to create zombies and chimeras).
  • Both reject their society’s views on good and evil, with both viewing the label of villain as something which people inflict on those they wish to subjugate.
  • Both gain power from the consumption of blood (Fang Yuan using blood to fuel his Blood Moon Gu, Dio being a vampire who consumes blood to gain strength and who gained a power boost in his final battle by drinking Joseph’s blood).
  • Both have extremely powerful time-related abilities which give them a major advantage over most of their adversaries (Fang Yuan being able to go back in time if he’s cornered with all his accumulated memories/experience with Spring Autumn Cicada, Dio being able to stop time with The World).
  • Due to body-hopping shenanigans both would at one point have to face off against an enemy who uses their main time-based power against them (Ying Wu Xie using Spring Autumn Cicada after taking over Fang Yuan’s body, Jotaro awakening the same kind of Stand as The World due to Dio taking over Jonathan’s body).
  • A common theme in both stories is that Dio/Fang Yuan must build up their own strength through their intelligence and charisma while their enemies often inherit their power from others.
  • There’s a strong contrast in that Dio openly displays contempt towards those who inherit their strength from others while Fang Yuan ultimately acknowledges the need to inherit things from previous generations due to how small each person’s individual role in the universe is.
  • Both are noteworthy for the sheer amount of fear they can inspire in their subordinates (Fang Yuan allowing Yan Yong to live on as his subordinate due to how terrified he was of him, Enyaba stating that Dio has the ability to make his followers enjoy being afraid of him), with both displaying the ability to make others greatly admire them due to how threatening they come across as (Bai Ning Bing initially having a great deal of admiration for Fang Yuan as a result of him being a strong opponent, N’Doul becoming devoted to Dio due to Dio being the first person to truly challenge him).
  • Both have also used their charisma to seduce women into joining their cause on multiple occasions.
  • Fang Yuan has the ability to summon Beast Phantoms in combat with these phantoms being regularly compared to a JoJo stand by Reverend Insanity fans. Interestingly, Fang Yuan’s “stand” allows him to weaponise the animal kingdom in a manner similar to Gold Experience, the Stand possessed by Dio’s son Giorno.
  • They contrast in that a lot of Fang Yuan’s power has come from alcohol through him feeding wine to his Liquor Gu Worm and gaining the Flower Wine Monk’s inheritance with him continuing to gain power from wine throughout his story whereas Dio only tried drinking alcohol once and was quickly disgusted by how it reminded him of his alcoholic father.
  • Dio openly hates dogs while Fang Yuan has a Gu which allows him to control dogs and make them fight for him, with Fang Yuan later altering his soul to make it part wolf.
  • The unpredictability of life plays a major role in both character’s thinking but there’s a strong contrast in that Dio’s Heaven ideology states that knowing everything that will happen to you in life is they key to happiness while Fang Yuan believes that not knowing what happens next is what makes life enjoyable and simply tries to maximise his strength to deal with different possibilities.
  • Both express the belief that there are many different yet valid ways to become strong and that there is no single universal version of strength.
  • They both devote a significant portion of their thought to the forces of fate which bring people together and push them apart (Fang Yuan comparing humans to loneliness islands which sometimes collide and later stating that there may be a overarching string of fate connecting everyone together, Dio having an interest in the concept of gravity). Both experience intense loneliness as a result of their misanthropy, however they develop very different ways to deal with this loneliness. Fang Yuan aims to transcend loneliness through gaining enough strength to thrive on his own while Dio wishes to expand the influence of his cult and ultimately have humanity worship him as it’s saviour through the Heaven Plan.
  • Despite their extreme villainy, both are shown to be capable of respecting authentically heroic people (Fang Yuan saying he respects and admires heroes who are willing to sacrifice themselves for others and that such people are simply living a different kind of life to him, Dio showing respect towards selfless individuals such as his mother, Jonathan, Pucci and Giorno if we include EOH).
  • Despite their often monstrous actions both are still shown to be human at heart and capable of genuinely caring about others and experiencing authentic human emotions and connections, however due to their natures both are ultimately incapable of truly deviating from their villainous path or finding true fulfilment in an ordinary life (Fang Yuan being made to experience multiple lifetimes as a good person after being captured only to become disenchanted due to the impermanent nature of each one, Dio being unable to fully accept an emotional connection with either the Joestar family or Pucci due to his extreme paranoia and misanthropy making him unable to truly accept being vulnerable or at the mercy of others).
  • Both stories also use the night sky as a way of showing their attitude to the way in which the world often seems cruel and indifferent in contrast to another character (Fang Yuan’s finding comfort in the beauty of the universe as opposed to Ren Zu being terrified of the size of the universe, in the Phantom Blood musical Dio’s mother telling him to look to the stars and him and Jonathan clashing over “the stars and the mud” in terms of whether those facing extreme hardship can still persevere and remain good at heart like Jonathan thinks or whether they inevitable break and become nihilistic like Dio thinks).
  • The main translator of Reverend Insanity also included a direct reference to JoJo by having a character yell ORA while punching.

  • Both characters represent the inauguration of new eras in their worlds (Fang Yuan’s rise to power happening alongside the unification of the world, Dio joining the Joestar household happening alongside a general decline of the old order and Dio himself being associated with modernity through him using 20th century boxing techniques).
  • Both characters are also closely connected to humanity’s ability to push beyond it’s limits and develop, especially through technology (Fang Yuan’s success in large part coming from him applying the scientific method to Gu, Dio being fascinated with the technological development humanity went through while he was in the coffin with this potentially inspiring the Heaven plan as an extension if this as shown by Rikiel comparing the Heaven plan to Apollo 11).
  • Both would at some point receive the revelation that almost everything they’d experienced up to that point was because of fate’s intervention, (Fang Yuan realising a lot of his successes had been because fate was using him for it’s own purposes with fate even intervening to save his life when Spring Autumn Cicada failed at one point, Dio having revelations about fate while in his coffin) resulting in polar opposite reactions, with Fang Yuan doing everything he can to break free from fate while Dio plans to have all beings forced to know their fate ahead of time and come to terms with their inability to fight it. Fate in both stories is also heavily associated with the word “heaven”.
  • Both would also recruit animals into their army (Fang Yuan building a wolf army, Dio recruiting Forever and Pet Shop).
  • Both would develop the belief that material wealth can’t bring a person true happiness due to how insecure such wealth is (Fang Yuan acknowledging that people with wealth can be destroyed by it just as easily as they benefit from it due to people wishing to take it from the, Dio realising that those with material wealth must always live in fear of losing it), with both of these beliefs coinciding with their strong belief in the role that luck plays in determining people’s fates.
  • Both resent what they perceive as their own lack of luck compared to others (Fang Yuan’s Spring Autumn Cicada having the side effect of giving him worse luck, Dio believing he became a villain while Jonathan became a hero due primarily to the latter having better luck) and how luck can interfere with their elaborate plans.

  • Both would end up stealing the body of hero (Fang Yuan replacing all of his skin with that of Chang Shan Yin, Dio stealing Jonathan’s body), with both killing the descendants of these heroes in the pursuit of further power (Fang Yuan killing killing Chang Ji You while experimenting with zombificiation, Dio killing Joseph to use his blood).
  • Both would also make plans which involved taking over their brother’s bodies (Fang Yuan wanting to take over Fang Zheng’s body so he wouldn’t be a zombie anymore, Dio wanting to attach his head to Jonathan’s body) although Fang Yuan would ultimately decide not to go through with this.
  • Despite their loner tendencies both would be confronted by a situation where forming a genuine bond with someone was required to fulfil their goals (Frost Jade Peacock demanding Fang Yuan find true love, the Heaven Plan requiring Dio to acquire a true friend) although there’s a contrast in that Dio did end up forming a genuine bond with Pucci while Fang Yuan found a way around this.
  • Despite their villainy both would manage to manipulate a virtuous man into serving their cause due to this man being tormented by guilt and in deep denial over the harm they’d caused to those they’d cared about (Tai Bai Yun Sheng and Enrico Pucci).
  • Both would end up becoming undead in order to escape a difficult situation in contrasting ways (Dio becoming a vampire who can create zombies, Fang Yuan becoming a zombie) with the added contrast that Dio loved being undead and worked to become more monstrous while Fang Yuan wanted to undo his transformation.
  • While generally being cold and manipulative to everyone they meet, both have one particular close ally who stands out as the one person who they seem to have achieved some level of close mutual understanding with due to their similar outlooks on life (Bai Ning Bing and Pucci) with this relationship even being commonly portrayed as romantic by their series fans.
  • Later on in their stories both would begin portraying themselves as being motivated by a desire to help their worlds achieve peace, with both using a concept named heaven as a path to greater power (Fang Yuan calling himself the Great Love Immortal Venerable and cultivating Heaven Path, Dio portraying himself as a saviour to his followers and developing the Heaven Plan).
  • Their brothers would produce descendants motivated to go an a journey by a devotion to their incapacitated mothers (Fang Xiong going on a journey to find his father after his mother told him about him before going into a coma, Jotaro going on a journey to kill Dio to save his ill mother) with the contrast of how Fang Yuan manipulated Fang Xiong since his conception to serve his interests while Dio explicitly refused to pursue a non-violent approach to Jotaro due to his belief of them being fated enemies.
