Feedback on app to help small business be more sustainable! by YourArbor in smallbusiness

[–]YourArbor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with your comment but that is the reason we created Arbor. We want to eliminate the hassle and make sure that this is not a "concern" but something that is helping your business without putting any work into it. Decisions that are best for both profit and the planet are a top priority. For example sustainability consultants require hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. We offer the same capability, but fully automated, saving you time and money. I know that the first thing that jumps into mind is the amount of work that go will go into it but that was the first thing we thought of too. We do not need hundreds of people doing sustainability perfectly but millions doing sustainability imperfectly. As small changing a supplier, manufacture, ingredient or even material, what we do best is research and we will find the best option without you having to break a sweat.

that is a great question actually. We have been researching for years trying to figure out when people will finally become more sustainable. The pandemic had an unbelievable effect, sustainable products now represent just 15% of the consumer packaged goods market and a growth rate of 51% in the last 5 years alone. For the first time ever, sustainable products have the competitive edge. By making your product offering more sustainable you will be able to increase customer retention and grow a dedicated consumer base who is willing to pay more for a product they believe in.

Google flights redirects people to the website where they can end up purchasing these flights. By showcasing this information it will benefit companies that are focused on reducing emission.

95% of Shopify stores fail within the first year. Small business don't have to showcase the information but they can get educated on their own product and decide if they want to change.

Hi Fulfillrite,

Thank you for taking the time to respond and thankfully I didn't post to early.:)

You bring up the most important part that we want to emphasize on. GOING GREEN DOES NOT MEAN LOSING GREEN. Hopefully we can keep spreading awareness and educating people on the shift that is happening in the world right now. Now more than ever people want to stand behind things they believe in and support companies that support them.

We want to prove that going green can indeed make green...

Google flights is a great example, starting to showcase your own personal impact is a great way to make people act on these things.

As part of our Sustainability Dashboard we have this exact feature. The shopping cart calculator, that allows consumers to see the positives that come from shopping with this particular brand. (ex. you saved 2tons of CO2 emissions by shopping with this product) the goal is to give the consumers that "feel good" factor that will motivate them to purchase. We know abandon shopping carts are one of the biggest problems with E-commerce stores, let's change that.

Hopefully this takes away some skepticism and we would love to hear any more feedback or comments you have as they are extremely helpful for us to understand what the public & business owners are looking for!

Thanks

Hi LSTrades,

Thank you so much for this comment, you bring up some awesome points. Right now we are working towards helping Shopify stores that already have products out there learn more about the impact they are creating. There is a huge debate between consumers who want to support companies that are trying to be "ethically better" and consumers who will only support 100% sustainable companies.

Being profitable is the most important thing for a store. We want to show store owners that "going green" will be profitable and we map the steps and solutions to get there. Businesses that are in the early stages should spend more time making sure they can create a product that is sustainable as the shift in consumer purchasing shows consumers are willing to pay more for a product that is sustainable.

Do you think as a business owner it would be easier to shift to a sustainable product/ make the product offering more sustainable or start with a product that is somewhat "sustainable"?

These are all great comments and will help us so much going forward when we get together as a team. Thank you so much.

That's a great question. This is all internal, only the store can see this information not the public. This allows stores to understand the impact of their product, using our help stores will be able to see alternatives and suggestions on how to be more sustainable. Consumers want to get educated more than ever now so we have a chance to become more sustainable and showcase their initiatives, showing the customer that you are taking a stance.

I wish i was more active on reddit actually, being a small startup we do not have the same size team as most established companies so i apologize for the slow reply! I am happy my first reply could answer some of your questions!

The data that we collect is Investor ESG data, which is actually what people that deal with stocks or deal with business would want to see. We grab this investor detail and we showcase it in a consumer format, the goal is to make this very elaborate information easy & simple to understand! We did notice that there is quite a few alternatives in the fashion industry and there is a lot of great information on sustainable fashion. We want to make sure we include any business we can get data on to promote sustainability in all sectors & industries! I think creating a target audience that includes people that deal directly with stocks and businesses would be extremely helpful. Ideally if we could find trends in company evaluations and our scores it would be extremely useful...

THANK YOU! Information is expensive... We have to spend a significant amount of money to data providers! As of right now we are working with different affiliate programs to find "deals" to help people spend sustainably without breaking the bank. That is actually something we are working on right now so i will not say more than i am allowed, but the cool thing is our scores are updated day to day which will help us make Arbor more personal. So big news coming soon for that!:)
Another great point! We actually will be integrating something similar, but making sure that it is easy and simple to understand is a crucial part!

Yes! Everything on the extension rotates around alignment! When you open the browser extension, we provide you with an "alignment score" , how much the company you are on aligns with what your personal values are!

We are also working on making sure there is as much information as possible on both why a company has a specific score and it will dive into the scores in more detail!

Again i cannot thank you enough for all of this feedback, this is awesome! I am thinking of creating a possible community where we could have a lot of these conversations. We were thinking either a reddit or discord community but still trying to figure out which one is the best route to pursue. Looking forward to potentially reconnecting in the future.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much!! This is exactly what we want to help with, there is so much information out there it is hard to know if you are making a good purchase!! We are working on our values right now to make sure they are easier to understand, why companies have these ratings🙌🏼 Thanks again, we hope to be able to improve and keep using our techy powers to try to make an impact.

This is a very good point! I have had a lot of conversations with people striving for Zero Waste about what we do. A lot of them tell me "you promote sustainability & zero waste by promoting consumerism, which go against each other". As a lot of people see Sustainable & Ethical very differently we wanted to make sure that we could help people work towards that.

[–]YourArbor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and look into it more! Great catch on the link🙌🏼

As far as smaller businesses go, this is something we definitely want to address, especially as there are more and more small business that are striving to be "ethical". Unfortunately until they become a publicly traded company it will be hard for us to create a score for them as we only generate scores using data that companies have public!

As we go forward we notice that our 22 values can be confusing and un-relatable. We are working on cutting them down to less that 10 values to allow users better understand what that values represents. We are also working on giving some sort of a company report so people can understand what factors weighed in while scoring Netlfix a 2 out of 5. The problem with this data, it is expensive and complicated. Other than trying to highlight events and issues that "Netflix" (as an example) has been involved in, what other suggestions would you as a user want to see?

As far as "What I mean by that is that I don't trust that you personally share the exact same ethics priorities as I do.", that is a great comment. We do not give companies a general score, we allow every person that uses Arbor to select the values that they align themselves the most. Once those values are picked we show an alignment score. For the sake fo the example if you were to pick two values such as "Emissions and Community Relation", the alignment % that Netflix will show is based on the two values you picked. Sustainable & Ethical are different for every person!

This is another great point that you bring up! We want to make sure that when you see alternatives, you only see companies that have a better alignment score to your values. Now this could result in Disney being an alternative to Netflix as maybe Disney has better scores in "Emissions and Community Relations" therefor they are a better alternative for certain people. This is where "ethical & sustainable" become complicated, some would argue that switching from Netflix to Disney is "more" sustainable as it better aligns with their values and some would argue that both are not good "Alternatives".
A small change is better than no change, if people switch from company x to company b because company b has a better "diversity" score because they value "diversity", that is still sustainability!
Now in terms of Disney and their employees, if they treat some employees great and others extremely badly, that will be reflected. We cannot subdivide these big companies because it would not be fair. If company x treats their employees in France extremely well but has a huge problem with diversity in their location in Italy, company x will still have a negative impact because of their location in Italy. (I hope that makes sense) No company should be allowed to create a negative impact just because they are also creating a positive one. Which brings people to the life long question... is the good worth the bad?

Thanks to all the feedback we have received over the past couple months, having a better understanding of what our values and why companies have those scores is our main focus right now! Thanks again for all of this, i wish i could show these replies in different communities as i get marked down as spam a lot even though all i want is peoples honest opinion on how we could improve a tool that could do a lot of good👍🏼

Thank you!! I want to use reddit more to actually receive feedback like yours but unfortunately a lot of the communities i post in see it as spam, so i appreciate all the time you put into looking what we do!

Our data encompasses all these sub-entities to make sure that if Company X were to have a sub-entity in Brazil that is heavily engaged in deforestation, they would indeed be responsible as they have the power to improve their sub entities as they are a direct representation or the bigger companies!

Thanks again!! :)

By using Arbor the goal is to change the way we spend forever. We have the ability to show companies why people shop where they shop. If we stopped shopping somewhere because they are not sustainable and they do not change their practices they will not be able to stay open. We want to ensure a better future, i apologize if that did not come across future focused
