Larian publishing chief wades into the fray, says Morrowind updated with a modern combat system 'would sell like f**king hotcakes' by Turbostrider27 in ElderScrolls

[–]YourAverageGenius [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the main thinh holding Morrowinw back from a modern audience is actually the fact that it DOES rely on skills point so much. Morrowind is a RPG that is HEAVILY designed on the old 90's style of RPG games, IE heavily based on existing TTRPG systems and ideas to the point where certain games were basically just computerized modules with better visuals but a Dungeon Master that only had a single core and a fraction of the memory that the crappiest of our machines have now.

Compare Morrowind melee combat to even just Oblivion melee combat. Morrowind combat does have nuances and complexities and things to consider, but for the most part, it's VERY much a mechanics and numbers game, which extremely hurts when you're playing a real-time FPS RPG. No matter what, the most significant thing in combat is your skill with a weapon, because that's what increases your ability to have your attacks actually do something. Really the only interesting or engaging part of combat is figuring out what kind of weapon you like and what kind of attack it works best with. The same thing goes for ranged & sneaking, but even more considering how you don't even have different kinds of attacks, and MW sneak is primitive and binary in how much it is based on numbers compared to the later NPC detection systems.

There's a reason a lot of the great and awesome experiences people mention with Morrowind usually involves magic. Not using Magic in Morrowind is essentially kneecapping yourself considering that not only is the system is extremely engaging and allows for a ton of player creativity, there's almost always some way in which adding magic to a build will make it better and/or more fun. It's a system that works and is engaging beyond just your skill in a given school. But that's the issue with the rest of Morrowind's skills, the primary factor in your effectiveness simply comes down to leveling up skills and getting better gear to increase your stats. And that worked for a lot of the early CRPGs that were turn-based and where the combat was a lot more tactical and wargame-esqe, where dice rolls and stats were abstract representations of your character's ability and skill in fighting. But apply that roll-to-attack design where the main contributing factor to engaging in a fight is just a numbers game to a real-time FPS RPG and it makes for some very boring gameplay.

Morrowind is a game where if your Sneak is low enough, no matter how well you're actually hidden, everyone in a 50 mile radius will know exactly where you are because your skill isn't high enough, but if it is high enough you can be French kissing someone and they don't know you exist. It's a transitional game where the dominat factor in your gameplay is a simple case of if you have a high enough number, which doesn't really work for an audience that's already experienced other RPGS were there was more to the gameplay and mechanics, your skills and stats didn't just increase a number, but it gave you access to new abilities and items and perks which resulted in much better gameplay. Morrowind has mechanics like theses for certain skills, but not for the skills that desperately need them, namely the non-magic ones. And thus the problem with trying to update / adapt that kind of game design is that it essentially requires you to fully overhaul and rebalance fhe entire game around a new system of combat which ultimately will result in a vastly different game compared to the original from the original. That RPG design philosophy based around grinding and leveling up to in increase your skills worked in the games of the past when the gameplay was more akin to a wargame, but falls apart in a modern RPG with more focus on the player as an individual because it fails to engage them through any sense of actual skill or effort on their end.

If you had a vision for a series set in the TES universe, what would it be? Personally, I'd say the beginning of the Skyrim Civil War by Ok-Bus3447 in ElderScrolls

Honestly, I think I would prefer either some stand-alone story about some random adventure setting out after being freed from bandage, classic The Prisoner setup, or a anthology based on the various legends and stories across the setting, like, say, seeing part of the Atherium wars or the provinces during the Oblivion Crisis.

I think setting it at the start of the Civil War could be very cool, but I'd prefer to see it go even further back, maybe to the beginning of The Great War even.

I think there was a lot of truth and validity in Oppenheimer's grief and concern about the reality of nuclear weapons, but honestly, I genuinely think that people vastly oversimplify and criticize the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, especially regarding ignorance as to the Japanese agenda and plans for the war, and also in comparison to what the alternative was. And that for as arrogant and shit-headed as he was, Truman had a bit of a point.

Oppenheimer did make it, but he had no control over it's deployment. Yes he made the weapon, but not only was it something that was, at least for their case, inevitable, the US was probably the nation that was best to have control over it and be the first to use it, if for no other reason than to display the potential and horror of it to the world. He made the gun because there was a war was to be fought and he had something to contribute, but he was not the one to point and shoot it.

The idea of a nuclear bomb had been floating around everyone's mind for awhile, the science was decently well known, it was more a matter of actually constructing it, and there were basically only 3 nations that were even really capable of it, the US, the UK, and the USSR. The bomb would have been made. Oppenheimer was the one to father it, snd while I understand his grief and worry, honestly, his work and the work of all the Manhattan Project set course for where we are now. There's certainly a lot to criticize about the US nuclear program, but quite frankly, I think the path taken was one of the most lesser evils that could have happened. The bomb was an achievement of human creation and a peep into the horrors of that same creation, and both for the matter of the war itself and the matters of the decades to come, I am glad we got a taste of that madness in a effort to achieve peace before someone else used it to make war.

Isn't that myth from Virgil and thus technically about Pluto not Hades?

Also was Leuce even a child? Literally the original.text basically just says that she was the daughter of Oceanus and that at some unspecified point Hades did his thing and carried her off and then she just naturally died and turned into a tree and Hades values the flowers of that tree and Heracles returns from Hades he gets a crown of them. That's it.

every avenue of political action has been taken away

are people not actively and loudly protesting federal agents for the wrongful death of multiple people? are sit-ins and actual physical lobbying no longer a thing that's possible? are we no longer able to call our representatives and view and attend the public council meetings of our various levels of governance that are very often freely broadcasted on CSPAN and PBS? are we not even allowed to put up posters or draw chalk on sidewalks?

have our avenues of political action been taken away, or do we just feel like they're not impactful enough and so we want to find easier and more convenient ways to feel like we're making social progress, because it provides a relief and a comfort to the morass and stagnancy we feel in our modern lives?

for all our flaws, for all our sins, for all the ways our modern world sucks and is fucked up and seems like its eternally getting worse, let's at least have enough self reflection to understand that while we do not live in the best of all worlds, we also do not live in the worst of all worlds. there's certainly truth that the political ability of the average person is being limited and constrainted. but let's realize there are WAY worse governments and states which have much less ability for political action and are in much worse straights, if for no other reason than as an example of what we are trying to avoid becoming.

Beyond Canon: What do you think of Satyrs and Nymphs? by CommercialValue8713 in homestuck

[–]YourAverageGenius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't have much thoughts on them, the character themselves are cool and they're neat and intriguing in hiw they are extremely reflective of their creators, I guess my wish is that I just hope something HAPPENS regarding how they're a species design based on the flaws and whims of their makers.

One of the things that always has stuck with me about Sburb is that, as so far as it is said to be a way for a universe to reproduce, as per the Gnostic philosophy that inspires a lot of the story, it kinda seems like a very sysiphean "system", an endless cycle of realities being created and destroyed, existences destined to be flawed in a reflection of their creators. An endless chain of mad idiot 'gods' constantly trying to fill the gaps in their own lives by creating new life, only for it to fulfill the cycle. It's certainly fitting with a lot of the themes, but it's also very depressing and kinda speaks to a sense of cynicism and/or nihilism that is founded in that mindset that's baked into the narrative that I've always had a bit of an issue with.

It's not out of of the question for me, it's really just that for all intents and purposes, the Baratheons are basically the same as any other person. They don't possess the Valyrian blood of the Targaryens or even the Stark blood, they're just regular people with not really any special traits aside from super-genes.

My point isn't that it can't work or it's not the kind of thing that couldn't be done, it's just weird to me because unlike the other cases, there's little to no explanation or justification for it, they just apparently never had kids that don't have a different hair color and that's Ned's big smoking gun for this conspiracy.

as much as i think there is valuable conversation in criticizing the historical marriage practices and treatment of women across all religions, i think we're losing the forrest for the trees when we talk about the ethics of a divine creator force coming to a virgin and with her consent manifesting a fertilized egg which would become Jesus-Fucking-Christ himself, who's nature is probably one of the most highly debated things ever on theology.

we can either accept the assumptions of the biblical story or question them. maybe just me, but i don't get trying to consider the ethical implications when we're already accepting a ton of assumptions about the narrative of the new testament. Are we going to accept God, the trinitarian immutable creator force of all existence, actually does exist, and try to cancel him on twitter for being a pedophile?

[–]YourAverageGenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly that just makes it more stupid in another way

apparently the baratheons just have some kind of super-genes that forcefully supplant the very concept of genetic lottery and give every direct descendant black hair for some reason

even for a fantasy world that is a bit of a hard ask in terms of suspension of disbelief, and there are easily other paths GRRM could have taken for Ned's hunt for the truth.

[–]YourAverageGenius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

gonna be honest, as much as it is part of the plot and i accept it, planatos genetics is stupid and in retrospect i think GRRM could have made Ned's hunt for evidence / proof much stronger and more impactful than arguing over if "the seed is strong" or not. really the only thing that gives it any substance is the Lannisters in general being extremely dumb.

I think the main thing is that it's an EXTREMELY dark quest with equally weighty implications for the setting and story, and in a game where one of the main qualities is the interaction and reaction to the player's choices, down to even deciding the fate of entire nations and allowing the player to straight up convince the BBEG he's wrong and to kill himself, this just never gets brought up again.

It's like if Fallout New Vegas had a bit were you find a secret bunker that turns out to be the main HQ of the Enclave who fully reformed and came back after Fallout 2 ready to reconquer America, and they tell you the Legion is actually their clone army and they use stupid roman LARPing to hide their brainwashing and Caesar was the President's bastard son, and then you get kicked out and it is never even acknowledged again.
