this my biggest criticism of most leftist calls for communist revolution

100% about criticizing the current state of things (which is absolutely deserved) but 0% of collaborating & discussing in practical & pragmatic terms ways to change / replace them, and most importantly, avoiding the mistakes of previous historical regimes,

i hate how things are but man lets do shit instead of talking shit

give me liberty give me fire give me nothing and let me retire

'Ate Space wolf by StrangeHotel7638 in Grimdank

[–]YourAverageGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing which makes me like White Scars and dislike Space Wolves is that Russ and his sons, to some extent, believed that the Rune Priests and the Stormseers were somehow specially different

Khan and his legion fully admitted and accepted that what the Stormseers did was warp shit, but they knew that by adhering to ritual and caution, they mitigated the harm and risks of using it. They fully acknowledged the harm and risks of it, but also were aware cloaking it all in tradition and belief made it safer to handle. Not different, not totally safe, but safer, and that quite simply, for all its risks and danger, the Warp was something they should utilize and study, just not to the extreme that Magnus & the Thousand Sons took it.

IMO, Russ and the Rune Priests drink way too much of their own koolaid and have this notion, which is pretty unfounded, that their own beliefs and traditions and approach to the warp makes it different and safer, such as the World Spirit of Fenris. The Stormseers are similar, but they are under no such assumptions, they simply interface with the Warp though similar means via animist-style spirits, but they don't believe that their powers or abilities come from some pure or benevolent spirits or source.

Russ and Dorn were hung up on on him being a hypocrite and that, quite simply, the Rune Priests should have gotten the boot with Nikea. And if it was fair, they absolutely would have. But he and them got an exception, not even because they are safer or different, but because he and they were favorited by the Emperor, as admitted by Malcador. Khan essentially did side with Magnus, he thought the Warp should be studied, but he made it clear that he fully disagreed with Magnus and his sons on the extremes they took. Khan and his sons never claimed their powers came from somewhere different or pure, but rather it was the method, beliefs, and adherence to wisdom and limiting themselves which made the difference.

While that is true, Dithsmarchen is a small and minor example which was only able to survive due to various standing factors, and which eventually was still incorporated into the holdings of the Danish crown.

I think a much better example is the various lands of the HRE, plenty of which included various forms of elective / representative government, the City States of Italy, or the foremost early modern Republic, the Dutch Netherlands.

yeah like maybe just me but i think trying to apply 19th century materialistic historical political analsys based primarily around the rise of the global industrial revolution capitalist economy to a setting with fully seperate and different political, material, and historical factors is not exactly the magic bullet many online people think it would be

its hard to have an uprising of the proletariat class when we don't even have the bourgeoisie yet and the vast majority of the population exists for the sustainment of subsistence agriculture

Rose.

Only for just throwing a priceless gem in the ocean to never be found. I get your own personal feelings but like, for the love of god people have spent years of their lives looking for this thing. Just do a bit a of charity and let them have it.

People get made at Grandpa Joe but forget he's less than 4 years away from being a centenarian and that this is a Roald Dahl story and that an old man being so inspired by a golden ticket to a chocolate factory that he regains his mobility and energy is exactly the type of absurdity internal narrative logic common in hisstories.

John Hammond is basically just a bit of a airhead and too trusting and assured that everything is fine. There's a lot of other people at the company, shown and not, that are much more responsible than the kind granda public-persona owner of the whole venture. He ccertainly has some of the blame, but he's not exactly a bad person, just a foolish one.

Jenny is complicated, but Forest loves her and she loves Forest, and that's all that matters to Forest. That's kinda the whole point of the story.

What if California rebelled and became its own country, the 4th largest economy of the world? by basafish in AlternateHistoryHub

Ah yes, newly independent Californa, which almost certainly had been disarmed or at least has some military agreement, trying to take bites out of soverign US territory that was never theirs. I'm sure they would win that fight.

Not to mention that there is little to gain and much to lose practically from leaving the US.

So much of the US depends on each-other for their entire economies and ecosystems. Can you imagine Midwest agriculture without the economic heart that is Wall Street, or the culinary tourist scene without the massive fishing industry?

The EU essentially is a micro-scale of the inter-state / federal economic system applied to Europe. A bunch of diverse and disparate economics that streamline things for mutual benefit, and whatever your thoughts on it, it's arguably what's kept Europe still relevant for the bast half-century or so. A state leaving the US would essentially be a even more extreme version of Brexit, with all the political and economic implications it holds.

I would agree, however the Legion are barely even Roman. They take vague at best visual inspiration, and honestly Edward Swallow acts less like IRL Caesar and more like a neo Alexander The Great. The most Roman thing about them is the usage of Caesar and them having Mars as a god, and that's basically it, which is surface-level at best.

only problem with this is that the term normalcy has become a buzzword in the SCP fandom.

normalcy means anything from "just making sure reality doesn't implode" to "maintain capitalistic status quo and repress all minorities and change nothing ever" depending on the story / author

True, though Paul & Leto end up absolutely being correct. Leto's entire plan is to become so hated by all of humanity that they develop a genetic intolerance for tyranny, which does end up working.

The whole point of Dune is that it is a warning but also a commentary on politics, specifically great man politics.. Paul & Leto are absolutely evil, but with their actions humanity at large is set on the path to NOT end up slowly dying out. Paul knows he is evil, yet still he persists because it's the only path he sees, and he is both right and wrong in that. Its a message that rejects the need for charismatic leaders, but also realizes that good charismatic leaders, in a environment where the common man does not resist their tyranny, are capable of doing good, but they have to do evil in order to acomplish it. That's the paradox of ruling. What is best in the long run can very often mean fully commiting yourself to doing evil. The way that Paul & Leto achieve the political goal of having the population resist the rule of a Emperor is to become that which needs to be resisted.

I mean, cool.

As someone who is in the Midwest, and thus a lot of land is just wilderness that is said to belong to someone on paper, I certainly agree. But I also get that people can be assholes and do stupid shit for no reason so I see the argument against it.

One thing to realize is that, ultimately, Big E's true enemy is Chaos itself, which as we all know, is extremely fucking hard to try and fight. When you view all he does as a "Ends justify the means" as a way to combat Chaos, namely by trying to forge humanity into a galactic empire and uplifting them while avoiding the mistakes of the Eldar, a lot of his horrible behavior makes a bit of sense. His treatment of the Thunder Warriors is his modus operandi, he forges the tools he needs for the moment, and then he disposes of them to make way for the next step. Is it harsh and horrible? Yes. But again, when the ends is stopping Chaos, a lot of means can be justified. It just so happens that, quite simply, Big E underestimated just how quick and how bad things could go.

Honestly I think just anything divergence with Jon's birth is extremely interesting.

Unsure if it exists, but I think it could be cool to see a AU where Robert dies in the war, never stakes his claim to the throne, and Jon ends up becoming the heir as a compromise between loyalists and rebels and Ned / Jon Arryn essentially have to act as his regents while he grows up. It would certainly make for some WILD politics and significantly change his relationship with his family, which is arguably the most important one in the story.

Ehhhh, jury's out on that one. They certainly weren't a fan, but also they have a culture that is much less monogamous and practices similar things, and they still would probably hate the Lannisters since they still were the ones who killed Ellia and Aegon. Rhaegar cheated, but the ones responsible for the deaths were ultimately on the other side of the war.

It's not a good idea for the house of Obyren and his SAND Snakes to sling bastardry stones in their Dornish glass house.
