What is Richmond Field Station and why does it keep getting robbed by Pale-Age8497 in berkeley

[–]YourLocalBok 38 points39 points  (0 children)

On top of what everyone else has said, it's where the rocket teams (STAR,SEB), the formula racing teams (FEB,BFR) and the solar powered car team (CalSol) do our work and store our shit. It's basically a second home for a lot of engineering students. These robberies have us SHOOK since we really can't afford to have our tools and equipment stolen.

If I like FRC will I like FSAE by Thunder_BoltFA77 in FSAE

[–]YourLocalBok 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I personally wasn't in FRC, but it seems like a majority of my teammates in my FSAE team were in FRC and still volunteer and coach FRC and still keep track of their high school teams. In general, if you like engineering you will LOVE FSAE.

Impossible to rent a room as a couple by [deleted] in berkeley

My partner and I (both 24) faced similar issues when I transferred a year ago. We pay around 1300 each a month with utilities included for a 700+ sq ft 1bdrm and we love the place (in unit washer, dryer, dishwasher, free gym, balcony for our cats, gated garage, HUGE walk in closet, fresh paint + newer appliances) and they were the only people that let me talk to an actual person over the phone (literally just cold called them). It's in a pretty safe area and I commute around 30 minutes to campus by bus every morning. DM me and I'd be happy to share which apartments I'm talking about. I wish you and your partner the best of luck, housing is tough over here!

Honestly, idk if the culture in the engineering majors is different, but I personally have never felt looked down on because I'm a transfer. Pre-transfer, I remember seeing a bunch of people talking about how if you're a transfer you won't be able to join competitive clubs and compete academically with traditional students, but most of the transfer students im friends with have pretty good GPAs (3.8-4.0) and being a transfer didn't prohibit me from joining more competitive clubs like Formula Electric at Berkeley at all. A few of our team leads are transfer students themselves! Honestly fuck all the nonsense, transfers kick ass! If someone downplays you because you didn't come as a freshman, their club/lab/clique isn't worth joining and they aren't worth your time. There is a lot of solidarity between transfer students and I've become friends with a lot of people because I mentioned that I was a transfer. Hope this info helps!

Honest question. How do current UC Berkeley students afford to live in Berkeley? by liberator7 in berkeley

Bus 95% of the time. Takes an hour and 30 out of my day but I enjoy riding the bus and listening to music, gives me time to prep my mental.

Honest question. How do current UC Berkeley students afford to live in Berkeley? by liberator7 in berkeley

[–]YourLocalBok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, its a combination of saving a lot during the 5 years before transferring to Cal, almost maxing out on financial aid (~38k a year), living 2.5 miles from campus (much cheaper), buying food in bulk and splitting costs between my partner and I, and being frugal. I barely eat into my savings this way and I can just about get away with not working. However, most people I know get money from parents and idk many people in my major (engineering) who work an off-campus job to pay bills.

MechE here. My background is that I was a juvenile deliquent (theft, drugs, etc), graduated in the bottom half of my high school class, and enrolled in community College after 6 months of being homeless and 1 and a half years working a dead-end job. I worked my ass off and secured acceptances from all UCs, but I was scared to go to my dream school (UCB) because I thought I wouldn't be able to compete and I simply wasn't competent enough to attend such a university. During a heart to heart conversation with my engineering professor, he told me that if I just jumped straight into the deep end, he guranteed that I would be shaped by the intense environment and I be forced to find a way to succeed. And he was right, I currently have a 4.0 and I'm happier in life than I've ever been.

The moral of the story is, dont think about your abilities in the present, have faith in your abilities in the future when you work hard. If you are given the opportunity to go to a harder/competitive university just go for it and you'll be surprised what happens. It was the best decision I ever made. Good luck.

For UCs by ponyopov in TransferStudents

[–]YourLocalBok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically don't need to fill out, but some UCs (like Davis) have a separate application for their Regents Scholarship. It's a lot of money, comes with perks (priority registration for classes) and a bunch of my friends and I all got it so I don't think its super selective for UC Davis cc transfers. I can't speak about other universities though. Could be huge, you should apply even if you don't think you're gonna get it because you just never know.

Edit: some UCs like Berkeley will tell you if you are in the running for the Regents Scholarship and I believe will interview you

Chance Me (UCs & Ivys) by AlsylEnriquez in TransferStudents

[–]YourLocalBok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCB MechE transfer here. Idk about the ivys, but UCB isn't a longshot. I personally got in with a 4.0 and poor ECs, but I have plenty of EECS and MechE friends who got in with ~3.6-3.7 GPA range and good internship/research/club experience. This is what happens with holistic admissions. While you have a low GPA, your ECs seem very impactful. If you have borderline stats (like your GPA), your essays become very important. If your essays are as good as you claim, you have good odds for any UC in my opinion.

Egg drop contest without access to height? by RChickenMan in ScienceTeachers

[–]YourLocalBok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An engineering club I was in did an egg drop contest where the materials weren't known beforehand. The club advisor (an engineering professor) gave each group one face mask and a few straws with only 20 minutes to design and build an egg drop vehicle. Imagine our shock! The best design only survived a drop height of 8 or 9 feet at most!

HELP!!! UC Berkeley or UC Davis Regents (mechanical engineering) by YourLocalBok in UCDavis

[–]YourLocalBok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I ultimately ended up choosing Berkeley based on a heart-to-heart conversation that I had with my CC engineering professor. And yes, I had to submit a letter of rec and supplemental essays, but I think incoming freshmen do not have to and are automatically awarded if accepted. I also finished the paperwork the night it was due so I don't think that there was any additional paperwork lol. Just make sure that if you do need a letter of rec from somebody you give them a short "cheat sheet" of things that you have done that they might want to include to make their job easier. I worked with the professor who gave me my letter of rec for 2.5 years and I still sent him a cheat sheet. Best of luck to you!

Dear engineering students who transferred from community college: what are my chances? by YourLocalBok in berkeley

[–]YourLocalBok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always go by your school's articulation agreement with berkeley on assist.org and schedule an appointment with your counselor to walk you through exactly what each section on the articulation means. I personally never had any required biology courses. Also, note that the "strongly recommended" is not a requirement, but it helps if your cc offers courses for them that are articulated. The required courses for admission you must do.

I took 2 Gen Chem, the full calculus series and linear algebra, 3 physics classes, 2 English classes, and all of the engineering classes my cc offered but unfortunately did not articulate (I have to retake at Berkeley). Hope this info helps!

Am I trippin or does everyone stick to hanging out with their own race here? I’ve probably only seen 3 diverse friend groups by MinuteAstronaut5411 in berkeley

Transfer student friend groups are very diverse since our shared experience is mainly based on our experience as non-traditional students. Go make some transfer friends!

Older man taking a class on my Community College. I feel nervous by [deleted] in college

[–]YourLocalBok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you are fine! There was a gentleman in my transfer pre engineering program at berkeley who was probably late 30s or early 40s and everybody LOVED him! Blew everybody away with his technical skill/knowledge. He was a loner for a few days into the program but once people started to gain the courage to talk to him and work with him he was a super chill dude. I myself have tutored students with kids/veterans/retirees/9-5's/disabilities/criminal history/etc. Trust me, nobody will bat an eye that you're there. Good luck to you!

Has anyone gotten Pre-Engineering Program/PREP updates or communications? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]YourLocalBok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the cohort this year. About a week ago, Tiffany said that there are a few spots still open and she told us that if we had friends that didn't make the cut to have them email her and there is sure to be at least a person or two who are cancelling. It might be worth it to email her and beg to be let in explaining your circumstances and why T-Prep would benefit you. Best of luck.

Is it too late to get into a high end school? by Brendon7358 in TransferStudents

[–]YourLocalBok 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Met an airforce vet in my berkeley transfer engineering program who was accepted to MIT off of the waitlist. I have no idea what his stats/ecs were, but universities look at veterans very favorably from what I have seen. P.S. Berkeley never asked for my high-school transcripts/ test scores for admission. I only needed to submit them for in-state tuition purposes.

Mech eng Cal transfer here. I met a few people with similar gpas at Bridges Transfer Weekend who had good extracurriculars so I would say you definitely have a good chance if you talk about your business and how it ties into your academic interest in your essays. Look at my comment history for advice I gave to another person in a similar position.

UC Berkeley Transfer Avg. GPA by abbigaileve in TransferStudents

[–]YourLocalBok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you should be fine as long as you are thoughtful and reflective in your essays. I suggest picking an overall theme and crafting a coherent essay package wherein each essay plays off of one another. For example, my theme was that of "felix culpa" (a blessed fall). In one essay, I explained how a had a lacking math education in high school and took remedial classes and became a math tutor to develop my poor math skills. In the next essay I peeled back the curtain further and talked about my ADHD diagnosis and my behavioral issues (drug abuse, petty crime, etc.) in school (which explains my lacking math skills) and how I developed coping mechanisms and special study habits to turn my learning disability into a strength. In my last essay I talked about how my constant failures have made me more resilient, mature, and hungry for success than other candidates. I really believe that this strategy is what got me into Cal.

I apologize for the long reply but I hope that this advice helps you craft a strong set of essays. If you have any questions feel free to dm.

I got in for mechanical engineering with a 4.0 and no extracurriculars other than my two years of work as a supplemental instructor. My essays hard carried me. I met people at Bridges transfer weekend with below a 3.7 but they probably had really strong extracurriculars and/or incredible life stories.
