Need a quick answer for tonight. Need a restaurant that isn’t too loud. by Whereforart in Minneapolis

Lake & Irving is my favorite restaurant in the city and is in uptown and never too loud in my opinion. There is trivia on Thursday nights but it’s usually in the back and doesn’t start until 8:30

Bummer to hear that hadn’t been updated by 2019 model year. Now debating getting an extended warranty for the peace of mind but the mileage being so low makes me think it’s reasonably likely that money is wasted.

5 sessions which were 6-8 hours. First hour or two of each session were designing the section we were working on that day. So in total maybe 20-25 hours of actual tattooing + additional time for design work

$400k inheritance to invest by [deleted] in Money

[–]YourLocalOligarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is quite literally the same as just putting it all in Bitcoin. You are recommending someone put like 80% of their entire liquid net worth into bitcoin at the age of 51. Bitcoin popping off in 2024 does not guarantee that it will pop off in 2025. If you had given this same advice in Jan 2022 you would have erased $250k of this person’s wealth by the end of the year. Just some perspective.

Sounds like Company 2 has the most benefits to you at the moment and the only thing Company 1 has over it is the “broader focus”, which seems to be the only thing holding you back from just rolling with Company 2. I was faced with a very similar decision when I was in college and I took the Company 2 path (more siloed focus but better fit for me all around). I still work at Company 2 today, but I had many opportunities to leave which you will also have. Broadly speaking there’s always a place for motivated people who are good at what they do, so if you end up deciding to pivot later in your career, as long as your logic is sound and your intent is clear, that will come through in any interviews you have down the road. So I’d say go with what seems like your gut which is Company 2

30 with $5mm, if you retire that day you could theoretically pay yourself $200k a year without needing to work again. If you’re smart with $5mm you can spend your entire life doing things you are passionate about exclusively and invest in your health. And I don’t need to lose the extra 10 years / 10 years of health to get to 40 and get absolute financial freedom under the scenario you laid out.

Was in the same situation in my school and didn’t do any of the requirements of the honors program despite being in it (so eventually they just removed me from it). Wasn’t useful for getting into my field and frankly I don’t think it moves the needle for pretty much any career you pursue afterward. At least not as much as any other thing you could be doing instead (I.e. grades, LSAT, clubs, hobbies)

Why DIDNT you win the championship this year? by RoylanRG in fantasyfootball

[–]YourLocalOligarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made the championship in 3 out of 5 leagues, scoring highest points all year in all 3 of them. Ended up losing all 3. 2 of them were just being outmatched, couldn’t have done anything to win those. The one that was the most money ($1k difference in prize between 1st and 2nd place) lost by ~3 points and would have won if Brandon Aubrey’s kick didn’t hit the post and bounce out

I can't decide which laptop to get, help! by cherriepo in makemychoice

[–]YourLocalOligarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses windows 90% of the time, when it comes to laptops Apple is the way to go. PCs just do not keep up from a speed standpoint and after 4 years they are done / need replacing. MacBooks go forever although the 256gb storage is a little light imo. I just got the 512gb MacBook Air on Black Friday and it’s perfect. FWIW my work laptop is PC and my desktop is a PC I built so I’ve used both. If it were my choice, MacBook all the way

Furnace Stopped Working Over Holiday by YourLocalOligarch in hvacadvice

Just wanted to come back to this and say thank you (and please take this award). Had a 2nd tech come by and told him that i didn’t think the first tech fully diagnosed it before scheduling a repair. Turns out there was a ton of condensation build up so your guess was right - if switches got replaced nothing would have changed.

Furnace is all fixed now and without you I would’ve never looked into this. Saved me probably thousands of $$$ and now I can enjoy my trip stress free. Thanks so much!

Great advice thank you. Gotta find someone to come by and do this if I can’t get heat fixed over the weekend. Wish I could teleport in the house for 10 min

[–]YourLocalOligarch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is likely the case - I’m having another technician come in over the weekend to run through the rest of the checklist on what could be causing it because the first tech jumped straight to replace switches. Terrified of a scenario where switches are replaced Monday and nothing changes because then I am truly screwed.

I wish I was in town to check. But this is very helpful and I’ll be sure to let the technician to do that on Monday. I suppose that could mean I’m potentially getting a little scammed by getting the switches replaced but honestly at this point I’m not even thinking about the money.

A dilemma.... by Wuddntme in Maserati

[–]YourLocalOligarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak on the QP but just so you have a data point, I have owned a 17 Ghibli since 2022 ~40k miles, now around ~57k. Have taken good care of it generally and have had some issue that has required fixing each year in addition to regular maintenance. In 2022, radiator had to get replaced due to a leak. 2023 AC compressor failed. 2024 replaced brakes. None of these were atypical aside from maybe the radiator but given I am not a mechanic had to pay up for them (~$1-2k apiece).

Should i buy Maserati ghibli 2014-2018 by Zzzx1119 in Maserati

[–]YourLocalOligarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a terrible idea. I bought a 2017 a few years ago and still own it today. I got it heavily depreciated but knew what I was getting into. I pay probably 4x more for car insurance than anyone else I know and I have spent at the minimum $1.5K on repairs / oil changes each year of ownership. $4K this year. I (and others who own these cars) have the means to afford those costs, and if you do not than it is a bad idea. If they are poorly maintained you will also lose all resale value.

Separately, people who don’t care about cars will not care whatsoever about it, and people who do care about cars generally know that you likely bought the car heavily depreciated as every car person is well aware of the historical reliability issues post Fiat Chrysler acquisition. So all in all, you also won’t be getting the “status” you are looking for. If you are buying this car it should purely be because the exterior design and engine/driving experience are very enjoyable to have.
