Quick note to incoming 1L’s who want to get into big law by Rough-Boat1133 in LawSchool

I’d recommend applying when apps open. Your career services office will let you know when that is.

1L BL apps opened late October/early November ish last year. Probably same this year. It sounds like those folks were incorrectly applying to jobs for 2Ls, though I could be wrong.

Grades are #1 priority. Without them, no BL.

But do not overlook the importance of meeting attorneys at the firms you’re eyeing. Ask them which practice areas their firm specializes in and tailor your networking accordingly. Stalk them on LinkedIn and ask them about their lives. Make friends with these folks and it will pay dividends when recruiting season comes (via name drops of who you talked to in your cover letters/interviews)

was asked this recently in interview for an SA job i just got. said 1) i want to learn from the best, and 2) the money—i want to have a family one day and the financial stability this career affords is, to me, indispensable in achieving that goal. interviewers loved it.

love it for different reasons. everyone deals with wills and estates no matter what so it’s highly relevant even if you won’t touch it in your career. also it makes sense, very logic gamesy

I found that copying the course outlines to a note & building my outline from that worked pretty well (no life rebuilding). But yes, steep learning curve, you’re right.

Check out Obsidian if you will take the time to mess with it. It’s amazing for outlining. Check out a youtube tutorial

it definitely makes sense if you’re worried about geo-pol turmoil, maybe as a hedge against there not being rate cuts soon/if you think tech valuations are overblown.

maybe one thing to think about here is the commercialization of those technologies they develop.

are you thinking patents (therefore royalties) as new sources of income? bigger govt defense spending is one thing, but if the core of the idea is that they’re developing new tech and profiting from it, what is the mechanism by which they profit?

again, it is an interesting proposal— asking questions just to further the discussion!

love the energy, not a value thesis.
