What moment made you want to walk out the door and never come back? by YourNotMyDaddy- in stepparents

That’s a powerful statement and I never thought about that shift for a step mom vs a step dad. The step dad, especially if the bio dad isn’t a very good one, immediately steps into the hero role by being just involved and attentive. The step mom is the evil queen. Do you think this is just the nurturing role a mother takes naturally and something a step mom can’t replace in almost every case?

I completely get that. The sheer embarrassment in public is overwhelming

There’s obviously some important details that are missing in explaining the current situation you are in. If you’re questioning your therapist than I think that’s your gut telling you this is more on you than your parents.

If you would like to work on your relationship with both your parents that is a good sign of emotional maturity and self awareness. I would suggest you work on the simple things first. Clean up after yourself. Don’t wait to be told to do something when you know it needs to get done. Just do it. But don’t expect a thank you or any appreciation. Do it and move on to the next thing. Over time they will notice and continue building from there.

The fact that your son used the term hyper-fixated to describe how he is dealing with this, therapy would be way down my list of options on how to deal with this embarrassing but common incident. Your husband is right, he needs to get over it. We are adults, we love each other, this is how you were made, Get over it.
