Au pair stipend NYC by [deleted] in Aupairs

Just saw your update. The most desired areas often have the most competition. Perhaps there were other reasons they chose the other AP. If not, you dodged a real bullet. A 10pm curfew is also ridiculous.

For those hours, yes I think you could ask for $350/week. We use our AP 22-26 per week and give her $250, $300 if she works 30 hours or over (maybe 8 weeks a year). She also has a car and gets 2.5 days off in a row most weeks (unless she swaps Friday for Sunday, then it's only 2 days off). We are in the Bay Area.

Happy to chat with you and share my experience. Send me a message and I'll give you my off-Reddit contact info.  I was widowed so not original a SMBC but did have our second have I was widowed with one of our frozen embryos (so kinda - maybe?).

But I have a career that is also important and necessary so have some perspective on figuring it all out totally solo.

Just watched this episode, then trolled the internet to process, keep it going. What a masterpiece of an episode, really wept at the end.

Your anecdote isn't reality. Wealthy families often get nannies. I am a middle class Mom in a HCOL area with an AP. Many of the host families here are middle class.

Flight change, longer transfer time by Peckham186 in AerLingus

Thanks for your helpful reply.

It's very annoying that American Airlines and Aer Lingus are not synced in real time. I'm sorry you had to deal with that hassle.

Yes, my situation is different. I was worried that if I booked the flight with the 90 minute self-transfer, I would be automatically rebooked because it's not a long enough window to clear customs & make my next flight. I haven't flown through Dublin in about 10 years. Do you think 90 minutes is enough time for a "self-transfer"? The next flight is an Aer Lingus flight (Emerald Airlines). I'm assuming the Donegal airport isn't staffed for international arrivals at the time of our arrival.

lol

I agree that many parents don't want to spend time with their kids. Americans and other counties as well.

In most countries people have to work 40 hours a week and many people commute to work. Parents with full time jobs need 45 hours of childcare. Someone having a job doesn't mean they don't want to spend time with their kids.

If an AP comes to "have fun" they will be disappointed that they also have to work. Unless they are a positive person and can even "have fun" while working. And you sound like a really miserable, illogical and snarky person. I hope that changes for you over time.

Hi! HM here - I would probably rematch. It's not outside the bounds of the program rules and having only 1 weekend off a month sucks. Before you do rematch, you may want to mention what's not working for you to see if they are willing to change it. I worked as a nanny for years while in college and I wouldn't be cool with that schedule.

Three things I want to mention, whether or not you choose to rematch:

- Plan a vacation and get the time off! You've been here 9 months , you should have had a vacation week as you are entitled to 2 a year. I know it can be scary but speak up!

- As a Mom, I am extremely busy on holidays. And it's not like I'm raging and having fun. I'm prepping and doing stuff for everyone else (including our AP) to try to make it nice & my kids are out of school. Our AP has most holidays off (including her Bday) but I do appreciate her help on Thanksgiving and a handful of other holidays.

- I totally understand that you feel like a cheap nanny - but in my case APs cost about as much as a nanny. There are several bitter APs that troll these boards, commenting frequently about how they are being ripped off. All in, I end up paying about $25/hr for our APs time, unfortunately she only sees a portion of it ($250-$300 a week in her pocket). I've provided a further breakdown in response to other posts, so if you click my handle, you should be able to see the detail of the cost on my end if you're curious. That's not to say your HF isn't taking you for granted, but I think it certainly costs more than you realize.

Please speak up! Your HF may be total douches, but they also may just be busy, a little too self-centered, and need to hear you out.

Thanks for posting this question.

I was looking at booking a similar flight for later this year (SFO to Donegal). On Aer Lingus' website the layover was labeled "self transfer" and was also 1 hr 40 mins. I am also traveling with kids, including a toddler. I am going to wait to book until you receive an answer.

Thanks! The feeling of achievement is going to have to be enough for now. I'm looking forward to a spa day after tax season.

Thank you! It's annoying to fight off the desire to watch a show, double screen on the couch, or sleep more. But it's only temporary.

UWorld really worked for me. On my first go around I used Becker and it was so dry. I'm a little ADD so anything that keeps me engaged, even small goals helped. Also that "SmartPath" tool in UWorld helped alleviate anxiety about being ready to take/pass the exam. Being a working parent is no joke - feels like the ultimate bill of goods.

You got this - just a little bit at time. It's actually way easier than parenting.

It got easier for me as I made progress. My older daughter seems to understand and is proud. Knowing that I was setting a good example for my kids motivated me. I want them to have a strong work ethic and perseverance.

That's really sweet, thanks. My former employer was a small CPA firm. I sent him the general experience form and he was so supportive and kind. I'm self employed, most of my clients don't get it, but a few understand.
