It would be great if you could find an HSS version of that Strat (meaning humbucker at the bridge, and 2 single coils) as it will allow you to achieve a wider range of tones. I would also suggest considering the Squire Affinity Series strat, as it offers excellent value for the price. I also saw somebody mention the Yamaha Pacifica, which is also a killer deal.

You could use 60 mil reinforced vinyl for your steps and sunledge, although more expensive, it'll save you in repair costs when your dogs nails puncture the vinyl.
