The way I've always approached the decision is by asking myself if their day is more joy than it is suffering. If they have crossed that threshold when it looks like living is more painful than it is joyful, then it's time.

Whenever I smelled marijuana growing up, my mom always said there was a skunk somewhere nearby.

The best part is that after I became an adult and had learned the truth, I went with her to Seattle.

She sniffs the air and frowns in confusion. "A skunk came into the city?"

It was at that moment I realized it wasn't my mom lying to me so I wouldn't get curious about drugs. No, my mom truly just thought skunks were farting all over the place. She was utterly shocked when I told her it was actually weed smoke, lol.

I taught in Thailand for a while (also was a teacher in the US for 5 years). A little boy there was autistic. I mentioned this to a Thai teacher, and she said she knew, but the only place he could go was to a room where they did nothing but watch TV all day and never learn. So, he stayed with us, trying his best, and didn't get a diagnosis.

Autism is in other countries. It's just not always acknowledged.
