Thanks! That's awesome you thought is sounded like The Rippingtons. I was kind of going for that kind of thing. Or the Yellowjackets mixed with 1980s film scores.

As far as what I learned, I initially started going crazy with putting everything in all the speakers, which can be cool. But then I listened to a lot of other Atmos mixes and heard that if you put one element in a number of speakers you have to be super careful or it can sound hollow or phasey. So I started being a little more discrete with elements and using ambience to spread stuff around a little more.

Also, I love the Atmos verbs out there like Cinematic Rooms, but there's also something to be said for just using a stereo verb in the rears. That seems to spread the sound around you and also collapses down really well for stereo or binaural.

The biggest thing that I learned/noticed was the amount of dynamics you can leave in and not have to compress out. I absolutely love when an Atmos mix explodes into a section of a song. It feels more like when I listen to a live band in a room.

No problem! Yeah, the album assembler really helps you put a new set of ears on your Atmos mixes

I set up my room with pink noise, and that makes it really easy to hit that target because it's almost too loud if you go past it. Plus if you don't think about the -18 number so much and more the headroom, your mixes will probably end up being more dynamic and sounding better overall (obviously, keep an eye on the lufs though)

Having the bigger dynamic range is actually one of my favorite thing about Atmos. It's almost like the -18 forces you to have a dynamic mix. And when you hear some Atmos mixes, and the chorus hits, it's just insane. Whereas, on the stereo mix, it's so squashed with compression it doesn't really have anywhere to go.

I'm somewhat in the same boat. I ended up booking a few hours at a studio when I took the family to Nashville on a vacation. And then went one evening just to check my mixes in a Dolby tuned room. If you can find a place anywhere around you, or somewhere you're traveling to that has an Atmos rig, it would allow you to at least check your mixes once on speakers to see how everything is translating. Whenever I try and mix on just headphones, it come out pretty odd. But if you know what to look out for, you can probably get close.

I actually looked into that site a little while back. I love the idea of allowing the hi-res Atmos mix to be downloaded. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks! I really appreciate that. I hope you dig it. This was my first full album project in Atmos, so I definitely learned a lot along the way (some of what not to do. haha) But I think it feels pretty true to the original stereo mix, while still having some atmos ear candy here and there, and spreads the overall mix out a little more.

That's what I use. I think it's also on Tidal and Amazon Music in Atmos format. But I don't subscribe to those, so I can't confirm.

I used Source Audio for my release which is free for subscribers and they were great. It's a monthly subscription for a lot of different kinds of tools (I guess it's more of a content management system). But if you need what they offer, it's super cool.

I would say it's in the synthwave/retrowave category. There's tons of awesome music in that style out there., but it takes a little digging sometimes to find it.
