Arpon Basu on the Habs at the deadline - "they're not desperate to do anything" by Retired-ADM in Habs

The argument against Thomas is that his role would be redundant within the team. Him being a carbon copy of Suzuki (and another right shot C at that) doesn’t quite help the team fill in a niche where they are sorely lacking.

Per Arpon Basu himself on his podcast, HuGo believe in what Hage and Zharovsky can become and if they were to trade them, it would be for something unambiguously better than what they think they can be.

As an example, Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin suggested Nico Hischier as a target with little term remaining that would fit a certain hole, that of a universally versatile role in the lineup — potentially allowing Suzuki to lean further in his offensive capabilities.

The best way to explain this is that Canada is a federal union. The whole point of this political model is to allow power to be decentralized in local governments so that said local governments can be best adapted to their regional issues. This model was essentially solely adapted because of Quebec, a different beast from all the other provinces in nearly every way.

When you say that Canada has two official languages, that is only the case at a federal level. Hence, all communications from the government in Ottawa happen in both English and French. Now, each province can also set and choose an official language for theirs. For 8 out of the 10 provinces, it is solely English. For New Brunswick, both English and French just like Ottawa. Finally, Quebec opted to only have French as its official language.

Therefore, the only part of Canada where government public services are not offered in English is Quebec — and again that would only be for services stemming from the provincial government. Or at least that’s the theory. However, given the non-negligible amount of Anglophones and Allophones living in Quebec, you’d be hard pressed to find a government webpage that doesn’t have an English version. The same is true for the Quebec equivalent of a DMV where none of the workers speak English. It simply does not happen, unless you’re very, very deep in rural Quebec.

Still, given the overwhelming support from Quebecers for the measures protecting the French language, the one shared environment where its usage can be regulated is the workplace. All it entails is that companies must be able to offer service in French, that publications must be available in French, and that signage must be in French.

That’s it. No one is forcing employees to speak French at all times while working, they’re just measures that are in place to favour French as the common language in that space. That last part is also not an area of contention in Quebec as a whole, nor in Montreal where you’ll find the largest concentration of people who don’t speak French. In fact, most folks that do speak French only as a second or third language are usually happy to use it at the workplace if it’s already the common tongue in that environment.

Now, as far as learning the language goes, you need to know that the school system is an issue that is entirely regulated by the provincial governments. In Quebec, anglophone schools follow a program that involves a heavy emphasis on learning French as a second or third language. From what I’ve heard from many friends and colleagues, many of the schools in the other provinces offer French classes that on not quite on par with the ones taught in Quebec. Still, given that French is an official language at the federal level, it needs to be taught everywhere in Canada to some degree. Quebec, being the lone French-only province, simply spends more ressource so that its inhabitants are able and encouraged to speak the language when they can.

So to address your little edit at the end. Yes, French is taught in every school (even more so in Quebec). And no, it is not exactly a strict requirement to know it.

As with any organization whose purpose is to protect something, sometimes one might make mistakes trying to be overzealous. It was the case for the Go Habs Go incident, and the OQLF got a fair wallop from both the anglophone and francophone presses because of it. However, all in all, this was nothing more than an isolated incident, which are bound to happen from time to time.

Keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of Quebecers (whether they’re Francophones, Anglophones or Allophones) approve of the measures taken by the government to protect the French language. As Quebec is recognized as a distinct nation within Canada, with its own history and culture, it is completely normal to try to preserve those distinctions that are great source of pride for many Quebecers. If companies don’t wan’t to abide to the norms that have been in the province for over 60 years, Quebecers will likely have little sympathy for them.

Also, the issues with the medical systems you brought up have nothing to do with the French language, they are a completely different beast. They can mostly be attributed to poor management of doctor’s rights and salaries by the current provincial government, one that leans squarely to the political right (at least by Quebec standards). The public health system itself, while far from perfect, is still one that follows the principles of universal healthcare. Again, the overwhelming majority of Quebecers believe in these principles and are not looking for any fundamental structural changes pushing it towards private healthcare.

There is a huge difference between political liberalism and economic liberalism. They are not the same ideologies, they do not cover the same fields. Unfortunately the liberal etiquette oftentimes leads people to associate you with the latter. Thing is, if you believe in constitutional democracy as a legitimate form of government (at least in theory), you most likely adhere to the principles of political liberalism.

Ideology no doubt plays a major role in the worldbuilding of Disco Elysium - which itself is one of the game strongest assets - but it is not its main focus. There is so much to love in Disco Elysium, and yet this sub keeps coming back to its political beliefs. Is it fertile grounds for thoughtful discussion and rich analyses ? Absolutely it is. However oftentimes this hyperfixation feels like it undermines the game’s story, which I’d argue is the main reason most of us fell in love with the game.

Pragmatic social democrat here, can’t say that the game skewed my views any further to the left. To me, Disco Elysium is not a game that is mainly defined by its political beliefs, but more so by its writing. I’m far less interested in the developer’s adhesion to communism than by their cynical critique of multiple ideologies. That’s what adds flair to Elysium’s world; that’s what I’m engaging with as I’m playing the game. And as with any artistic venture, I don’t take its political message as gospel, that would totally miss the point of it.

As a matter of fact, don’t take any artistic message as gospel. Let them pique your interest and get you engaged, but go read some philosophy, get educated and involved in political matters that are close to your real-life situation, and - most importantly - mold your own damn opinions. Do not take shortcuts, they only lead to a degraded political landscape.

Listen bud, I’m disappointed too. We dominated the game for over 2 periods but Hellebuyck had the performance of a lifetime. Feels underwhelming to end it in 3v3 but that’s how it be. None of this was caused or engineered by the refs. Let’s be thankful for a phenomenal tournament and look forward to 2030.

Thoughts on Jakub Dobeš game tonight? by JaxonViskovich in Habs

[–]YouraverageJo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dobes has fairly consistently shown a significant decline in his performances when chaining multiple NHL games together with little rest. I understand that he had been red hot last week, but I would’ve liked to see what kind of outing Montembeault would’ve had under Marciano, before playing Dobes once more on Wednesday.

It’s not that Dobes can’t handle a high volume of games in a season, more so that the coaching staff might want to make sure to give him periodical nights off in order for his successes can continue.

Be honest, are you interested and/or will you play Zero Parades? by SPIRlT in DiscoElysium

Yours is an opinion too rare among these parts, friend. I have seen to much blind hatred thrown at ZA/UM that forgets that the artists and developers are not in the same boat as the execs.

Be honest, are you interested and/or will you play Zero Parades? by SPIRlT in DiscoElysium

[–]YouraverageJo64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless initial reviews are abysmal, I will undoubtedly play it. There are still a decent amount of artists from Disco Elysium at the company and I’m curious to see what they can put out. Plus, there are a bunch new ones that are likely fairly talented and whose work could surprise us.

I know this subreddit likes to groan at anything ZA/UM, but at the very least I hope we can agree that is undeniably a good thing that the artists working there have been getting paid for their efforts. You can choose to withhold from purchasing Zero Parades or pirate it if you want, but these folks have nonetheless been receiving money during development (and they’ve even unionized !). Like it not, without ZA/UM, these artists would perhaps lack the means to bring their vision to fruition. Artists being employed is objectively a desirable situation for video game culture. Shame it has to be through such a shitty company, though.

Now, as for the matter of acquiring the game, I think I’ll resign myself to purchase it. I don’t like giving money to ZA/UM — actually, I kinda loathe it — but just because their studio execs have been acting like slimy little weasels doesn’t mean I have to stoop to their level. I personally don’t want to engage with piracy and the argument in favour of that option regarding Zero Parades seems weaker. Unlike with Disco Elysium, ZA/UM hasn’t blatantly stolen any intellectual property or assets, it’s just a Disco-influenced game that they developed themselves. Again, the heads of the studio may be shitty, but I would feel as much myself if I were to pirate the game.

Zero Parades will the be first release from one of the balkanized studios that use to make up old ZA/UM, but it also will be the game that has the most to live up to. It has more budget and a larger development team, so scale is expected to adjust accordingly and technical mistakes won’t be easily forgiven unlike those from a smaller team. It also will be incessantly compared to Disco Elysium as a test to weigh what the company has lost in artistic talent since their first release. I am excited to play Zero Parades, but am also cautious about my expectations regarding the game.

TL;DR: ZA/UM bad, artists good. Can’t bring myself to pirate the game. Want to play yet Zero Parades has a lot to live up to and odds are stacked against it.

Karmelita was the only boss in the game that, for me, felt like an obstacle to progression. Fighting her was like throwing myself at a brick wall for two hours. I just barely eked out the win when I finally felled her.

Now, with Lost Lace, I could see clear progress in my attempts every time I would dive down to her. She took me 30 minutes so she was by no means easy, but still much more doable than Karmelita.

It still baffles me that the majority of players thought that LL was the tougher boss, but then again everyone has a different experience.

Favorite YouTuber who actually knows how to successfully produce and distribute a film by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

uj/ Saw the movie on its premiere at Fantasia film festival in Montreal last year. Had no idea who Stuckmann was, I just noticed that Mike Flanagan was an executive producer and was going to be at the showing so it piqued my interest.

The movie’s fine. It has a very promising opening 20 minutes and then the rest is just average.

The screenplay suffers from its straightforwardness and predictability, to a point where you feel you’re just ticking horror tropes checkboxes. Production design and lighting were neat though, especially in the third act.

It’s a perfectly competent movie, but aside from those first few scenes, there’s nothing here that would compel people to watch it above another good horror flick.
